Composers' Collected Works: A Case Study In Remote Work Compatible Catalog Maintenance, 2022 Binghamton University--SUNY
Composers' Collected Works: A Case Study In Remote Work Compatible Catalog Maintenance, David Floyd
Library Scholarship
Approximately 15% of Binghamton University Libraries' 28,000 musical scores are collections of scores comprising a composer's complete works. Ideally, these large, multipart, non-circulating collections are cataloged consistently with either comprehensive records for each set, or individual records for each score within the set. Our catalog is inconsistent in this approach and requires remediation. The resulting workflow maximizes flexibility in who participates, where, and when, by siloing the portion of the work requiring data processing and advanced music cataloging skills. This poster will show both the workflow for standardizing composers' collected works sets, and how the project is designed for remote …
Analyzing And Enhancing Juvenile Biography Subject Headings For Equity, Diversity And Inclusion, 2022 University of Central Florida
Analyzing And Enhancing Juvenile Biography Subject Headings For Equity, Diversity And Inclusion, Sai Deng, Peter Spyers-Duran, Jeanne Piascik
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
To better present the Curriculum Materials Center (CMC) materials at the University of Central Florida and improve access to these materials for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), the librarians from Cataloging, CMC and Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery Services (ILL/DDS) undertook a project to analyze the bibliographic records of juvenile biographies and used the results to enhance subject headings with biographees’ gender, race and other information.
A Qualtrics survey to audit the juvenile biography collection was designed by the librarians, and a student checked the biography books and inputted data into the survey. The librarians then exported the data to …

The Old And The Prudish: An Examination Of Sex, Sexuality, And Queerness In Library Of Congress Classification, 2022 University of North Carolina at Greensboro
The Old And The Prudish: An Examination Of Sex, Sexuality, And Queerness In Library Of Congress Classification, Tiffany Henry, Rhonda Kauffman, Anastasia Chiu
Published Works
Despite the fact that scholarship and knowledge about sex and sexuality have grown enormously in the last century, these topics in the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) schedules have remained stagnant, particularly in the HQ schedule (a classification subclass), entitled “The Family. Marriage. Women.” In this schedule, multiple structural issues in organization and placement of topics demonstrate a deeply sex negative attitude that has seen relatively little change in over a century. This article takes a deep dive into the negative attitudes toward sex and sexuality in the LCC HQ schedule, analyzing the ways in which sex negativity manifests structurally …

Cataloging Conundrums: Challenging Items That Have Crossed Our Desks, Rebecca A. Wiederhold, Sharolyn Swenson, Kjerste Christensen, Jessie Louise Christensen
Faculty Publications
Some of the most interesting items that cross the cataloger’s desk present difficult cataloging challenges. When cataloging a collection of suspected forgeries, how do you determine the “publication” date for faked documents? Which cataloging workform do you use for a LEGO model of the Salt Lake Temple? Is it a kit? A game? A sculpture? In this session, we will share examples of unique items we’ve cataloged and demonstrate how to effectively solve the questions that come up when trying to help patrons discover exactly what they’re looking for.

Ai-Informed Approaches To Keyword Generation, Text Summarization, And Document Clustering For Improved Resource Discovery, Charlie Harper, Anne Kumer, Shelby Stuart, Evan Meszaros
Researchers, Instructors, & Staff Scholarship
Academic and cultural institutions are grappling with problems of how to organize, label, and search disparate bodies of texts. As aggregators, preservers, and disseminators of substantial repositories of digital texts, research libraries are naturally situated at the heart of these problems. This chapter explores how unsupervised machine learning may be used to capture and simplify the complexity and nuances of text. Traditional approaches to improving discoverability and accessibility of text through metadata and controlled vocabularies have time-tested strengths. As the volume of digital data explodes, the obstacles and limitations of traditional approaches become more pronounced, and machine learning “show(s) the …

In the spring of 2021, Thomas Tredway Library at Augustana College undertook an audit of the library's print book collection to determine if there were gaps in representation of the voices of authors of differing races/ethnicities; genders; or sexual orientations. With the results of this audit, Augustana College librarians now have a …

This study tries to provide an overview of how open access scientific books from the OMP-based website at LIPI Press contribute to supporting the means of disseminating knowledge. This study used a descriptive qualitative method with data collection through literature study and observation of the OMP LIPI Press system, Google Analytics, Google Scholar, and Dimensions. The application of OMP as a scientific publishing system provides many benefits, not only in facilitating the editorial flow of publishing, but also in supporting the impact of electronic scientific books in the form of indexes and citations as well as visibility of the institution's …

Collaborative Librarianship
Systems of library and archival resource description have historically reinforced the societal power structures of white supremacy, patriarchy, and cis-heteronormativity. Following the framework of critical librarianship and acknowledging our positionality as predominately white departments, George Mason University Libraries’ Metadata Services (MS) and Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) have been engaging in a variety of projects of reparative resource description. To discuss points of collaboration between the two departments, the Task Force for Ethical and Anti-Oppressive Metadata (TEAM) was formed, consisting of staff and faculty members from both groups who work with resource description. Although the departments have a history of …

Term Circles: Using Linked Data As A Tool To Mitigate Colonial Subject Bias, F. Tim Knight
Librarian Publications & Presentations
This paper considers the Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA) recommendation to “decolonize library access and classification” and begins by exploring the difficulty involved when addressing this recommendation working from within a colonial institution that represents a colonial worldview. It compares general characteristics of Western and Indigenous worldviews and considers the affect that these perspectives have on the organization of knowledge and information especially in relation to a controlled subject vocabulary like the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). It presents the “term circle” as a way to mitigate colonial biases by creating a hybrid subject language system using SKOS …

Traditionally, library data has been designed for the use and consumption of humans, and it is not integrated with the Semantic Web. If we transform library data into linked open data, it will increase the visibility and usage of library data on the Semantic Web. Within the past few years, the calls for transforming library data into linked open data have become more and more frequent. In order to increase the value and discoverability of library data, libraries have been exploring options for making library data available and useful outside of the data silos of the library world through the …
