Electronic library content must be accessible to students with disabilities, however many institutions have focused on accessibility of physical facilities without considering the requirements for online information. Western Kentucky University (WKU) developed a required, automated program to audit WKU Libraries’ electronic content including, the website and library database vendors. Additionally, WKU began requesting documentation of accessibility features in the form of a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT). This presentation will focus on both our internal auditing efforts and the challenges of obtaining accurate vendor documentation.

The Open Parks Network serves the global parks community by providing the information, tools, and solutions to support the stewardship of the natural and cultural assets of protected areas. To date, over 350,000 items and 1.5 million pages of material has been digitized as part of this project. This presentation details the project's background and strategies used for digitization and metadata creation. Additionally, the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace Donor Card Collection project is detailed. This webinar presentation was conducted as part of the LYRASIS "Second Friday" series.

Due to Core Curriculum Standards and the STEM and STEAM Initiative, educators are searching for innovative tools to meet the educational needs. Makerspaces offer an outstanding perspective in teaching interdisciplinary studies. A wonderful example is the Future of Music Makerspace, which introduces participants to basic musicianship. By studying music, students will learn various other disciplines while collaborating and accomplishing a common goal.

Teaching Multimedia With Free Tools, Jim Lindsey

Students love doing hands-on work with multimedia – images, audio, video and Web sites. Unfortunately, software to do such work so can be costly and difficult to install. This hands-on presentation will show participants free tools for editing images, audio, video and Web site creation as well as how to incorporate them into their computer literacy courses. Most of the tools that will be shown are Web-based; students only need an Internet connection to use them. Since the session is short, hyperlinks to tutorial videos, sample assignments and grading rubrics will be made available to participants.

Recent lawsuits have focused attention on the importance of accessible online courses. Although often perceived as the role of the disability office, the responsibility for accessible online courses also falls on the shoulders of faculty and instructional designers. In this presentation, you will learn about Universal Design, how to be proactive, and how to collaborate with others on campus to provide the best experience possible for online students with disabilities.

The creation of the course-embedded Critical Thinking & information Evaluation Module series resulted from the need for undergraduate students to start their academic careers with a framework for evaluating information. Pulling from the Paul-Elder Critical Thinking Framework and focusing abstract information literacy concepts on the commonly-used resources of Wikipedia, Google, and scholarly journal articles, the presenters will delve into module creation to implementation of these modules and discuss the logistics of this process to guide other faculty-librarian-instruction designer collaborations.

Institutionally licensed eBooks have not quite lived up to users’ needs and libraries’ expectations. Patrons accustomed to the ease of accessing eBooks purchased via commercial sites such as Amazon and Google Play are sometimes thrown for a loop when they encounter eBooks via the library’s site and the myriad restrictions that seem designed to turn users away. Libraries struggle with managing the complexities of eBook licensing and access, and staying on top of the differences between vendor platforms. This talk is an expanded version of one given at the 2015 MOBIUS conference. Washington University librarians Emily Stenberg and Lauren Todd explain how they created and manage a collection in the university’s repository Open Scholarship for the Computer Science and Engineering department. This presentation will highlight how they developed a step-by-step workflow, addressed customization requests from the department, what really happened once that plan was implemented, and how they handle Bepress troubleshooting and faculty concerns. The presenters will also discuss how this project has helped them offer Open Scholarship as a service to other engineering faculty.

Describes the steps taken to extract Author/Corporate names from our local catalog (III-Sierra), the initial data cleanup work done in Microsoft Excel, and the final data cleanup work and Name reconciliation against the Virtual International Authority File (VIAF) and Library of Congress Name Authority file (LCNAF) using OpenRefine. Familiarity with extracting data from the local catalog and basic knowledge of how to use Excel is assumed. How to use OpenRefine for data cleanup and reconciliation is covered in depth (and with many screenshots).

Describes Raynor Library’s process to export MARC records and upload them to the Catholic Research Resources Association (CRRA) database. Steps through the process of extracting the records from local Innovative Interfaces Sierra database, and editing/massaging the MARC records with the MarcEdit software . The process is documented with many screenshots demonstrating the search queries, and command/menu paths needed to extract and update the MARC records.

DataQ is an IMLS­-funded project led by the University of Colorado Boulder Libraries, GWLA, and GPN to develop an online knowledge-­base of research data questions and answers curated for and by the library community. Publicly submitted questions to DataQ are reviewed by an Editorial Team of experts from 15 institutions across the United States. The site also includes links to resources, best practices, and practical approaches to working with researchers to address specific research data issues. This update from members of the Editorial Team will discuss outcomes and future directions following the first year of the DataQ project.

This session will introduce CORA (Community of Online Research Assignments), a pilot open access educational resource developed for faculty and librarians in higher education. Librarians at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) received a Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium (SCELC) Project Initiatives Fund grant to create an online open access repository of user contributed research and information literacy assignments targeted to SCELC institutions. At San Jose State University, a paper-based archive centering on library and information science history is being processed, organized, and uploaded onto ScholarWorks, the campus institutional repository. Prior to its digitization, the presenters grappled with many questions. What platform should be used to house the archive? What entry points would researchers expect in order to access the collection? What research purposes would this collection satisfy? The search for alternatives to high priced textbooks endures. The librarians at the MGH Institute of Health Professions, with the help of an IMLS Sparks! Ignition grant, decided to jump into the fray by creating the Open Access Course Reserves. It is a publicly available, curated repository that provides ready-made reading lists of free, copyright compliant (open access when possible), educational materials.
