Perfect And Imperfect Real-Time Monitoring In A Minimum-Effort Game, Cary Deck, Nikos Nikiforakis 2010 Chapman University

Perfect And Imperfect Real-Time Monitoring In A Minimum-Effort Game, Cary Deck, Nikos Nikiforakis

ESI Working Papers

This paper presents the results from a minimum-effort game in which individuals can observe the choices of others in real time. We find that under perfect monitoring almost all groups coordinate at the payoff-dominant equilibrium. However, when individuals can only observe the actions of their immediate neighbors in a circle network, monitoring improves neither coordination nor efficiency relative to a baseline treatment without real-time monitoring. We argue that the inefficiency of imperfect monitoring is due to information uncertainty, that is, uncertainty about the interpretation of the information available regarding the actions of others.

Price Increasing Competition? Experimental Evidence, Cary Deck, Jingping Gu 2010 Chapman University

Price Increasing Competition? Experimental Evidence, Cary Deck, Jingping Gu

ESI Working Papers

Economic intuition suggests that increased competition generates lower prices. However, recent theoretical work shows that a monopolist may charge a lower price than a firm facing a competitor selling a differentiated product. The direction of the price change when competition is introduced is dependent upon the joint distribution of buyer values for the two products. We explore this relationship using controlled laboratory experiments. Our results indicate that the distribution of buyer values does affect prices in a manner consistent with the theoretical predictions, although price increasing competition is rare due in part to overly intense competition regardless of the distribution …

The Attack And Defense Of Weakest-Link Networks, Dan Kovenock, Brian Roberson, Roman M. Sheremeta 2010 Chapman University

The Attack And Defense Of Weakest-Link Networks, Dan Kovenock, Brian Roberson, Roman M. Sheremeta

ESI Working Papers

This paper experimentally examines behavior in a two-player game of attack and defense of a weakest-link network of targets, in which the attacker‟s objective is to successfully attack at least one target and the defender‟s objective is diametrically opposed. We apply two benchmark contest success functions (CSFs): the auction CSF and the lottery CSF. Consistent with the theoretical prediction, under the auction CSF, attackers utilize a stochastic “guerilla warfare” strategy — in which a single random target is attacked — more than 80% of the time. Under the lottery CSF, attackers utilize the stochastic guerilla warfare strategy almost 45% of …

Export Vs. Import - Led Growth In Mexico, Joseph Kababie 2010 University of Texas at El Paso

Export Vs. Import - Led Growth In Mexico, Joseph Kababie

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This study concentrates on the role of imports and the impact they have for economic growth in the country of Mexico. The investigation is conducted in a time series framework using an ordinary least square method, a vector autoregressive model, and a vector error correction model to test the trade variables of exports and imports for exogenous or endogenous induced growth. The results indicate through Granger causality tests that imports are having the significant impact for economic growth. These findings are in some ways in contradiction to previous literature that has focused on exports as being the sole engine for …

Microstructure And Property Evaluation Of Lifepo4 Thin Films For Application In Microbatteries, Jose Marcos Mares 2010 University of Texas at El Paso

Microstructure And Property Evaluation Of Lifepo4 Thin Films For Application In Microbatteries, Jose Marcos Mares

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The shortage of fossil fuels and the requirements to produce clean, environmental friendly, efficient, and economical energy are the principal problems in the context of energy technology for current and future generations. Therefore, advanced energy storage and conversion capabilities with higher capacity and efficiency are desired. Currently, there is an enormous interest in the development of high energy density rechargeable batteries for use in domestic applications, automotive industries and portable electronic applications. The present research focuses on the development of LiFePO4 thin films for solid-state thin-film microbatteries. The present effort was performed with a specific purpose of understanding the effect …

Forecasting Tourist Arrivals To The Bahamas Using Error Correction Models, Jacky Sharon Charles 2010 University of Texas at El Paso

Forecasting Tourist Arrivals To The Bahamas Using Error Correction Models, Jacky Sharon Charles

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Tourism is the major domestic export for many countries in the Caribbean region. Given this, the variables which influence tourism demand in this region, as well as accurate forecasts, can assist policy makers in their planning efforts and growth strategies. This study utilizes error correction models (ECMs) to analyze tourism demand in the Bahamas. This is the first empirical attempt to estimate ECMs for tourism demand in the Caribbean region. Findings suggest that income and habit persistence/word of mouth advertising are the primary determinants of tourism demand in the Bahamas, while the cost of travel is generally insignificant. To assess …

Central Bank Independence: Rules, Practices, And Outcomes, Douglas Aaron Block 2010 University of Texas at El Paso

Central Bank Independence: Rules, Practices, And Outcomes, Douglas Aaron Block

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In recent years interest has grown in central bank independence as research has shown that it may affect many important financial issues such as unemployment, inflation, and inflation variability, among others. However, empirical evidence regarding its effect has been inconclusive and there is low correlation among various legal central bank independence measures. In this thesis, I attempt to resolve these problems by generating a new measure of legal central bank independence that takes into account divergence between laws and practices. I then measure the impact that democracy and proportional electoral systems have on reducing this divergence and find that democracy …

Empirical Evidence On Regulatory Burdens And International Income Performance, Enedina Licerio 2010 University of Texas at El Paso

Empirical Evidence On Regulatory Burdens And International Income Performance, Enedina Licerio

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This paper analyzes the effects of regulatory burdens on per capita national income (GNI) and the potential increases in GNI that can result from deregulation. Previous research indicates that a rigid regulatory environment hampers income performance. The availability of more recent data and the addition of several new indices by the World Bank now permits a broader analysis of regulatory burdens and income performance to be undertaken. Simulations are conducted to quantify potential impacts of deregulation and greater transparency on income performance. Results show that sizeable income gains can result from deregulation.
