Structural Differences In Rural Food Poverty Between Female And Male-Headed Households, 2011 Food and Agricuture Organization
Structural Differences In Rural Food Poverty Between Female And Male-Headed Households, Ceren Gürkan, Issa Sanogo
Zambia Social Science Journal
This article explores differences among female-headed households (FHHs) and male-headed households (MHHs) in terms of food poverty in Cameroon, Laos, Madagascar, Mauritania, and Tanzania. Stochastic dominance analysis shows that FHHs are more likely to be food poor related to MHHs, though this trend is less clear when looking only at food poor households. This ambiguity was clarified using discriminant function analysis. The results show that both female and male food poor households face the same obstacles to rural employment across the countries; barriers to access to land, productive assets, education, remittances and over-dependence on subsistence agriculture. Although further research is …

Keeping Marriage In The Black: Exploring The Effects Of Budgeting And Money Management On Marital Satisfaction, Kendra Sorey
Student Dissertations & Theses
Financial issues are often a major area of contention in any marriage. The Marital Satisfaction Inventory-Revised and a series of researcher-created questions were given to 109 married people to ascertain financial behaviors as they relate to marital satisfaction in the marriage. The current research shows that there was no significant difference found between marital satisfaction scores on MSI-R and financial behaviors; however, there was much information to be gained that shows that there may be some relationship between marital satisfaction and financial behaviors. The current research indicates that there may be some relationship between communication skills and good financial practices …

Estimating Economic Impact Using Ex Post Econometric Analysis: Cautionary Tales, Robert Baumann, Victor Matheson
Economics Department Working Papers
This paper provides an overview of techniques that can be used to estimate the economic impact of stadiums, events, championships, and franchises on local economies. Utilizing data from National Collegiate Athletic Association championships, this paper highlights the potential problems that can be made if city and time effects are not handled and unit-roots are not accounted for. In addition, the paper describes the technique for estimating dynamic panel data and the advantages that come with these modeling techniques.
International Labour Migration: The Missing Link In Globalization, 2011 Global Migration Policy Associates (GMPA)
International Labour Migration: The Missing Link In Globalization, Piyasiri Wickramasekara
PIYASIRI WICKRAMASEKARA
The paper analyzes the linkages between globalization and international mobility of people and labour, and concludes that labour migration is the missing link in globalization. It highlights that recent trends in labour mobility across borders hardly match optimistic rhetoric on migration and development and transnationalism at the international level. This paper briefly reviews recent trends in international mobility, particularly of workers, and reviews evidence and causes of mounting barriers to mobility. It discusses the emerging areas of convergence and divergence on policy and institutional options to optimize migration of labour for the welfare of the global economy.

Collective Choice, 2011 .
Collective Choice, Justin Schwartz
Justin Schwartz
This short piece is a contribution to The Encylopedia of Global Justice (ed. D.K. Chatterjee) (forthcoming from Springer Verlag May 2011). It summarizes the state of reserach on the problem for collective choice discovered by Kenneth Arrow in his Impossibility Theorem. In 1951 Arrow proved that a set of four or five (depending on how one counts them) minimal constraints that seem constitutive of democratic decisionmaking, including nondictatorship and rational consistency, are mutually incompatible. This created the burgeoning field of Social Choice Theory. I explain the problem in nontechnical terms, explore its implications especially for global justice, and review the …

Reforming The International Monetary System, Robert C. Shelburne
Robert C. Shelburne
There are a number of problems with the current international monetary system including the boom-bust cycles of international capital flows, global imbalances, and misaligned exchange rates. This note focuses on the current ongoing discussions surrounding international currency reserves and the use of the US dollar as the principal asset.

Coöperaties In Zorg. Een Verkenning Van Vraagstukken En Goede Praktijken In Binnen- En Buitenland, Wim Van Opstal
Wim Van Opstal

Making 'The Daily Me': Technology, Economics And Habit In The Mainstream Assimilation Of Personalized News, Neil Thurman
Neil Thurman
The mechanisms of personalization deployed by news websites are resulting in an increasing number of editorial decisions being taken by computer algorithms—many of which are under the control of external companies—and by end users. Despite its prevalence, personalization has yet to be addressed fully by the journalism studies literature (Zelizer, 2009). This study defines personalization as a distinct form of interactivity and classifies its explicit and implicit forms. Using this taxonomy, it surveys the use of personalization at eleven national news websites in the UK and US. Research interviews bring a qualitative dimension to the analysis, acknowledging the influence that …
Trade Facilitation And Country Size, 2011 Enterprise Analysis Unit, FPDEA, World Bank
Trade Facilitation And Country Size, Mohammad Amin, Jamal Ibrahim Haidar
Mohammad Amin
It is argued that compared with large countries, small countries rely more on trade and therefore they are more likely to adopt liberal trading policies. The present paper extends this idea beyond the conventional trade openness measures by analyzing the relationship between country size and the number of documents required to export and import, a measure of trade facilitation. Three important results follow. First, trade facilitation does improve as the country size becomes smaller; that is, small countries perform better than large countries in terms of trade facilitation. Second, the relationship between country size and trade facilitation is non-linear, much …
