Some groups in society communicate in ways that attempt to marginalize others. One such group is the Men’s Rights Activists (MRA) who use language to attempt to normalize the subjugation of women through its rejection of feminism. This activity is designed to engage students in a dialogue about MRA’s response to the domestic-violence incident involving Baltimore Ravens’ running back Ray Rice and his fiancé, Janay Palmer, in a hotel elevator. Specifically, the activity allows students to learn about MRA members and their hegemonic ideology, to examine/view the domestic-violence incident, and to use critical-communication pedagogy (CCP) as a means to examine …

On March 18, 2008, Barack Obama addressed the status of racial equality in America in a speech titled “A More Perfect Union.” The speech came on the heels of a media firestorm that erupted around Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Obama’s religious advisor and friend, whom media accused of harboring allegedly racist and anti-American sentiment. The association with Wright undermined Obama’s status as the post-racial candidate and threatened to derail his presidential bid. Using Kenneth Burke’s dramatistic process (the guilt-purification-redemption cycle), this article argues that Obama’s use of guilt may have contributed to his success. This qualitative study describes the dynamic resiliency-building process against gender-based violence in two rural coffee-producing communities in the region of San Ramon, Nicaragua. It examines the methods and efficacy of economic empowerment and educational interventions facilitated by the Union of Agricultural Cooperatives Augusto Cesar Sandino (UCA San Ramón) in addressing gender inequality, preventing gender-based violence, and increasing access to resources for women in the cooperatives of El Privilegio and Danilo Gonzales. Indonesians are taught by the government that communism is a devil trying to rip the country’s democratic and religious values. The propaganda started with a ‘coup attempt’ perpetrated by the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) on September 30, 1965 that left several army high ranking officers killed. The putsch then justified a state-supported genocide throughout the country that claimed up to 1.5 million of suspected PKI supporters. Whether the coup attempt happened and who masterminded the tragedy has remained unanswered, and the victims have yet to find justice until now. Penelitian ini berusaha menjelaskan terjadinya komodifikasi pekerja media (wartawan) dalam industri media massa di era konvergensi dengan studi kasus Tempo. Peneliti mengembangkan kerangka pemikiran dari teori ekonomi politik komunikasi, yang pintu masuk pertamanya adalah komodifikasi. The formal adoption of public service-oriented broadcasting (PSB) in countries undergoing political transition in Asia is increasing. However, this initiative is not protected by strong regulations. For instance, Indonesian PSB, which is represented by RRI (Radio of the Republicof Indonesia) and TVRI (Television of the Republic of Indonesia), remains difficult to realize. The arrival of universal ideas to establish PSB since two decades ago in the country lacks public engagement. Under a weak regulation, namely Broadcasting Law No. 32/2002, the PSB is far away from detailed preparations to serve as a truly public oriented broadcaster. This paper examines the process …

Dalam politik, kelompok minoritas sering berbenturan dengan etnis atau isu-isu agama. Tetapi, kita telah menyaksikan banyak pemimpin minoritas berhasil terpilih sebagai eksekutif politik. Pemimpin minoritas menggunakan strategi khas selama kampanye politik. Alih-alih menggunakan pendekatan rasional, pemimpin minoritas cenderung menggunakan pendekatan irasional. Kami melakukan analisis isi dari tulisan yang dipublikasikan di fanpage Facebook pemimpin minoritas selama 30 hari kampanye gubernur. Fokus penelitian ini melakukan analisis struktur jaringan komunikasi dalam gerakan sosial lingkungan pada komunitas adat Samin di Pati Jawa Tengah, khususnya analisis faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi sentralitas jaringan komunikasi dan kontribusinya untuk mendorong partisipasi masyarakat dalam suatu gerakan sosial lingkungan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dan kualitatif, mencakup analisis struktur jaringan komunikasi dengan UCINET dan analisis statistik dengan Path Analysis. Due to high profile police shootings, collective action movements addressing racial bias in policing, such as the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, have come to the forefront of societal concern. This dissertation explores the resonance between queer sociality and emergent forms of digital communication. Drawing from queer theory and LGBTQ social histories, this dissertation charts the convergence of digital social modulation with the polyvalence, promiscuity, and mutability of queer sociality. A close analysis of the infrastructure and design of Facebook, Snapchat, Grindr, and other queered social media platforms demonstrates how digital capitalism’s desire for lifelong compulsive engagement is in part facilitated by an appropriation of the ongoingness of queer sexuality and relationality.
