Why Not Just Google It? An Assessment Of Information Literacy Skills In A Biomedical Science Curriculum, Karl Kingsley, Gillian M. Galbraith, M. Herring, Eva Stowers, Tanis Stewart, Karla V. Kingsley

Library Faculty Research

Background: Few issues in higher education are as fundamental as the ability to search for, evaluate, and synthesize information. The need to develop information literacy, the process of finding, retrieving, organizing, and evaluating the ever-expanding collection of online information, has precipitated the need for training in skill-based competencies in higher education, as well as medical and dental education.

Methods: The current study evaluated the information literacy skills of first-year dental students, consisting of two, consecutive dental student cohorts (n = 160). An assignment designed to evaluate information literacy skills was conducted. In addition, a survey of student online search engine …

Identifying And Implementing The Underlying Operators For Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Based Metabolomics Data Analysis, Ashwin Manjunatha, Ajith H. Ranabahu, Paul E. Anderson, Amit P. Sheth 2011 Wright State University - Main Campus

Identifying And Implementing The Underlying Operators For Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Based Metabolomics Data Analysis, Ashwin Manjunatha, Ajith H. Ranabahu, Paul E. Anderson, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The science of metabolomics is a relatively young field that requires intensive signal processing and multivariate data analysis for interpretation of experimental results. The lack of integration and standardization for metabolomics compounded by the complexity of the experimental data has lead to a fragmented research community. While efforts have been undertaken to approach these problems, the efforts to develop a set of standards for reporting processing and analysis procedures has stalled.

In this paper, we propose a set of fundamental operators for nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) based metabolomics. These operators are implementation independent, and can be used to easily and precisely …

Avatars, Blabberize, And Cell Phones: Abc's Of The Digital Age [Paper], Kay S. Gandy, Rebecca Stobaugh

School of Teacher Education Faculty Publications & Presentations

The Digital Age is revolutionizing education. Educators need to be well-trained on the variety of technology tools available. Technology tools captivate the interest of students and encourage high-levels of engagement. Often, the daily lives of students are rich in technology, while teachers lack the knowledge or skills to integrate technology into the curriculum. Two university teacher education professors will share innovative technology tools to enhance instruction. The tools were modeled in education courses for preservice teachers and transferred into K-12 classrooms. Technology tools included: Skype, PhotoPeach, Prezi, Blabberize, Xtranormal, Poll Everywhere (voting with cellphones), Tagxedo, GPS, and GIS. For example, …

Deadly Silence: An Assessment Of Emergency Alert Systems For Lincoln County, Georgia, Gretchen B. Keneson, 2011 Augusta State University

Deadly Silence: An Assessment Of Emergency Alert Systems For Lincoln County, Georgia, Gretchen B. Keneson,

Georgia Journal of Public Policy

Rural counties have a predisposition to sustaining catastrophic losses during natural emergencies. These counties tend to have poorer economic conditions that exacerbate attempts at hazard mitigation.  Emergency Alerts Systems (EAS) are the most efficient and effective ways to provide information of impending danger.  This study will compare and contrast different EAS to determine which would accommodate the needs of a community. The most successful way for most counties to alert citizens is through the use of a combination of redundant systems. For pastoral Lincoln County, Georgia the optimal systems are an alert siren and auto call capabilities.  Both of these …

Promoting A Benefit Concert With Digital Media, Aubrea Felch

Graphic Communication

The introduction of digital media in mass communication and advertising had a powerful impact on the event planning industry, specifically in the promotion of benefit concerts. Not only can digital media promote an event, but it can also help event coordinators establish an image for themselves, be used as a means of benefiting those who have donated to the cause, and enhance the event itself. All digital media can be put into several different classifications: digital audio, digital video, digital photography, Internet technology, and interactive Internet applications. This study asks the question: In what ways can an event planner use …

Public Relations In The California Wine Industry: Improving Social Media Use Focusing On Facebook And Twitter, Stephanie Moore

Journalism

The public relations field advances constantly. The Internet and invention of online social networking has caused public relations practitioners to drastically change their ways. Now practitioners must learn to incorporate these new public relations strategies with traditional strategies to be successful in their field. The prevailing sites in online social networking are Facebook and Twitter. When practitioners integrate social networking to their arsenal of tools in the correct way, especially in the winery industry, the result may be exceptional.

Modeling Link Formation Behaviors In Dynamic Social Networks, Viet-An NGUYEN, Cane Wing-Ki LEUNG, Ee Peng LIM 2011 Singapore Management University

Modeling Link Formation Behaviors In Dynamic Social Networks, Viet-An Nguyen, Cane Wing-Ki Leung, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online social networks are dynamic in nature. While links between users are seemingly formed and removed randomly, there exists some interested link formation behaviors demonstrated by users performing link creation and removal activities. Uncovering these behaviors not only allows us to gain deep insights of the users, but also pave the way to decipher how social links are formed. In this paper, we propose a general framework to define user link formation behaviors using well studied local link structures (i.e., triads and dyads) in a dynamic social network where links are formed at different timestamps. Depending on the role a …

Media Literacy In Ireland: From Protectionism To Participation, Brian O'Neill 2011 Technological University Dublin

Media Literacy In Ireland: From Protectionism To Participation, Brian O'Neill

Other

Media literacy education in Ireland despite being under-resourced and relatively new to the public policy arena, builds on a long tradition and a solid foundation of critical engagement, creative activity and practical implementation. From a traditional position of protectionism in Irish cultural and educational policy, media literacy has rapidly moved to embrace new opportunities for greater participation and creative endeavour. This presentation will briefly sketch the contours of this development and identify the key elements of this multi-stakeholder, multi-disciplinary field.
