Aspects Of The Los Angelesation Of Ireland, Kevin Rockett

Irish Communication Review

Within a short time of beginning his seventeen year reign as Ireland's flrst Film Censor In 1924 James Montgomery (1) declared that the greatest danger to Ireland came not from the AngliciZation of Ireland but from the Los Angelesation of Ireland. This was a surprising admission given that Montgomery himself was closely allied With the conseiVative cultural and political leadership of the country which took power In 1922. During the previous four decades, especially since the foundation of the Gaelic Athletic Association In 1884 and the Gaelic League Jn 1893, enormous efforts had been expended in trying to establish a …

Glasnost 1990, John Murray

Irish Communication Review

It is now five years since Mikhail Gorbachev introduced the policy of 'glasnost" to the Soviet media. During that period the changes In the content of the Soviet press have been enormous. Soviet journalists are now free to write on many of the subjects that were de facto taboo under Brezhnev and his predecessors. The gradual opening up and expansion of subject matter upon which the Journalist may write has in turn resulted ln a stylistic unfettering of the journalistic manner of exposition which is a change no less importan t than that of the formal lifting of barriers on …

The Television Audience: A Research Review, Mary Kelly

Irish Communication Review

Television researchers. like television producers, regulators and other commentators. have used a variety of perspectives in their attempt to understand different facets of that apparently simple but in effect rather illusive category 'the television audience'. In this article I will look at three of these: those which have emphazised the audience as consumers. those which have defined the audience as public citizens. and those which have focused on the audience as cultural actors. Whlle noUng previous research within each of these perspectives and drawing on Irish research when avaHable. I will particularly concentrate on more recent developments. These developments have …

The Digital “Lure”: Small Businesses And Pokémon Go, Jordan Frith 2016 University of North Texas

The Digital “Lure”: Small Businesses And Pokémon Go, Jordan Frith

Publications

Most of the discussion about Pokémon Go has focused on the end-user and the playful nature of the game. Experts have mentioned the game’s commercialism, but they have done so mostly by talking about the data collection practices of the app developers. This commentary piece takes a different approach by examining how businesses have used Pokémon Go’s “lures” to attract foot traffic. The main goal of the article is to show how the ludic, digital wayfaring of location-based games can be used by individual places to attract players. While the focus is on business owners, I will also address …

Fun Versus Meaningful Video Game Experiences: A Qualitative Analysis Of User Responses, Ryan Rogers, Julia Woolley, Brett Sherrick, Nicholas David Bowman, Mary Beth Oliver 2016 Butler University

Fun Versus Meaningful Video Game Experiences: A Qualitative Analysis Of User Responses, Ryan Rogers, Julia Woolley, Brett Sherrick, Nicholas David Bowman, Mary Beth Oliver

Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication

Emerging research on video games has suggested that feelings of both enjoyment and meaningfulness can be elicited from gameplay. Studies have shown enjoyment and meaningfulness evaluations to be associated with discrete elements of video games (ratings of gameplay and narrative, respectively), but have relied on closed-end data analysis. The current study analyzed participants’ open-ended reviews of either their “most fun” or “most meaningful” video game experience (N = 575, randomly assigned to either condition). Results demonstrated that “fun” games were explained in terms of gameplay mechanics, and “meaningful” games were explained in terms of connections with players and in-game characters.

The Public Interest And Mongolian Digital Television Transition, Undrah Baasanjav

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Since 2010 Mongolian television has been in transition from analogue to digital.

This article introduces the process of digital transition of television, and then

discusses challenges television stations face in terms of the audio-visual market and

policies. The Mongolian media market has structural constraints typical to those

in the small media states. In addition, new challenges like the financial dependency

on the mining sector tax, an unsustainable number of politically affiliated

commercial television stations, and the remnants of socialist institutional routines

in media organizations also shape the television sector in Mongolia. The study

also explores the state of public interest …

Is The Smartphone A Smart Choice? The Effect Of Smartphone Separation On Executive Functions, Andree HARTANTO, Hwajin YANG 2016 Singapore Management University

Is The Smartphone A Smart Choice? The Effect Of Smartphone Separation On Executive Functions, Andree Hartanto, Hwajin Yang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Despite a huge spike in smartphone overuse, the cognitive and emotional consequences of smartphone overuse have rarely been examined empirically. In two studies, we investigated whether separation from a smartphone influences state anxiety and impairs higher-order cognitive processes, such as executive functions. We found that smartphone separation causes heightened anxiety, which in turn mediates the adverse effect of smartphone separation on all core aspects of executive functions, including shifting (Experiment 1) and inhibitory control and working-memory capacity (Experiment 2). Interestingly, impaired mental shifting was evident regardless of the extent of smartphone addiction, whereas smartphone addiction significantly moderated the negative effect …

Collective Influence Of Multiple Spreaders Evaluated By Tracing Real Information Flow In Large- Scale Social Networks, Xian Teng, Sen Pei, Flaviano Morone, Hernán A. Makse 2016 CUNY City College

Collective Influence Of Multiple Spreaders Evaluated By Tracing Real Information Flow In Large- Scale Social Networks, Xian Teng, Sen Pei, Flaviano Morone, Hernán A. Makse

Publications and Research

Identifying the most influential spreaders that maximize information flow is a central question in network theory. Recently, a scalable method called “Collective Influence (CI)” has been put forward through collective influence maximization. In contrast to heuristic methods evaluating nodes’ significance separately, CI method inspects the collective influence of multiple spreaders. Despite that CI applies to the influence maximization problem in percolation model, it is still important to examine its efficacy in realistic information spreading. Here, we examine real-world information flow in various social and scientific platforms including American Physical Society, Facebook, Twitter and LiveJournal. Since empirical data cannot be directly …
