Nonparametric Variable Importance Assessment Using Machine Learning Techniques, Brian D. Williamson, Peter B. Gilbert, Noah Simon, Marco Carone 2017 Department of Biostatistics, University of Washington

Nonparametric Variable Importance Assessment Using Machine Learning Techniques, Brian D. Williamson, Peter B. Gilbert, Noah Simon, Marco Carone

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

In a regression setting, it is often of interest to quantify the importance of various features in predicting the response. Commonly, the variable importance measure used is determined by the regression technique employed. For this reason, practitioners often only resort to one of a few regression techniques for which a variable importance measure is naturally defined. Unfortunately, these regression techniques are often sub-optimal for predicting response. Additionally, because the variable importance measures native to different regression techniques generally have a different interpretation, comparisons across techniques can be difficult. In this work, we study a novel variable importance measure that can …

Estimation Of Exposure Distribution Adjusting For Association Between Exposure Level And Detection Limit, Yuchen Yang, Brent J. Shelton, Thomas Tucker, Li Li, Richard Kryscio, Li Chen

In environmental exposure studies, it is common to observe a portion of exposure measurements to fall below experimentally determined detection limits (DLs). The reverse Kaplan–Meier estimator, which mimics the well‐known Kaplan–Meier estimator for right‐censored survival data with the scale reversed, has been recommended for estimating the exposure distribution for the data subject to DLs because it does not require any distributional assumption. However, the reverse Kaplan–Meier estimator requires the independence assumption between the exposure level and DL and can lead to biased results when this assumption is violated. We propose a kernel‐smoothed nonparametric estimator for the exposure distribution without imposing …

Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Faculty Research

The Computation and Modeling Engineering Laboratory (CaMEL), an implicit solver-based storm surge model, has been extended for use on high performance computing platforms. An MPI (Message Passing Interface) based parallel version of CaMEL has been developed from the previously existing serial version. CaMEL uses hybrid finite element and finite volume techniques to solve shallow water conservation equations in either a Cartesian or a spherical coordinate system and includes hurricane-induced wind stress and pressure, bottom friction, the Coriolis effect, and tidal forcing. Both semi-implicit and fully-implicit time stepping formulations are available. Once the parallel implementation is properly validated, CaMEL is evaluated …

As the number of cyber-attacks continues to grow on a daily basis, so does the delay in threat detection. For instance, in 2015, the Office of Personnel Management discovered that approximately 21.5 million individual records of Federal employees and contractors had been stolen. On average, the time between an attack and its discovery is more than 200 days. In the case of the OPM breach, the attack had been going on for almost a year. Currently, cyber analysts inspect numerous potential incidents on a daily basis, but have neither the time nor the resources available to perform such a task. …

Improving The Accuracy For The Long-Term Hydrologic Impact Assessment (L-Thia) Model, Anqi Zhang, Lawrence Theller, Bernard A. Engel

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Urbanization increases runoff by changing land use types from less impervious to impervious covers. Improving the accuracy of a runoff assessment model, the Long-Term Hydrologic Impact Assessment (L-THIA) Model, can help us to better evaluate the potential uses of Low Impact Development (LID) practices aimed at reducing runoff, as well as to identify appropriate runoff and water quality mitigation methods. Several versions of the model have been built over time, and inconsistencies have been introduced between the models. To improve the accuracy and consistency of the model, the equations and parameters (primarily curve numbers in the case of this model) …

Hazard Assessment Of Meteoroid Impact For The Design Of Lunar Habitats, Herta Paola Montoya, Shirley Dyke, Julio A. Ramirez, Antonio Bobet, H. Jay Melosh, Daniel Gomez

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

The design of self-sustaining lunar habitats is a challenge primarily due to the Moon’s lack of atmospheric protection and hazardous environment. To assure safe habitats that will lead to further lunar and space exploration, it is necessary to assess the different hazards faced on the Moon such as meteoroid impacts, extreme temperatures, and radiation. In particular, meteoroids pose a risk to lunar structures due to their high frequency of occurrence and hypervelocity impact. Continuous meteoroid impacts can harm structural elements and vital equipment compromising the well-being of lunar inhabitants. This study is focused on the hazard conceptualization and quantification of …

Thermodynamics Of Coherent Structures Near Phase Transitions, Julia M. Meyer, Ivan Christov 2017 Purdue University

Thermodynamics Of Coherent Structures Near Phase Transitions, Julia M. Meyer, Ivan Christov

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Phase transitions within large-scale systems may be modeled by nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations in which system dynamics are captured by appropriate potentials. Coherent structures in these systems evolve randomly through time; thus, statistical behavior of these fields is of greater interest than particular system realizations. The ability to simulate and predict phase transition behavior has many applications, from material behaviors (e.g., crystallographic phase transformations and coherent movement of granular materials) to traffic congestion. Past research focused on deriving solutions to the system probability density function (PDF), which is the ground-state wave function squared. Until recently, the extent to which …

Selection Of Breeding Stock By U.S. Meat Goat Producers, Narayan Nyaupane, Jeffrey Gillespie, Kenneth Mcmillin, Robert Harrison, Isaac Stienei

Community & Leadership Development Faculty Publications

Using nationwide survey data, we investigate U.S. meat goat producer preferences and willingness to pay for meat goat breeding stock attributes. Discrete choice experiments were employed, and mixed logit and latent class models were used for analysis. Results showed that producers preferred animals that were highly masculine/feminine, had good structure and soundness, and were of the Boer breed, whereas they preferred fewer animals that were older, of Kiko and Spanish breeds, and priced higher. Significant preference heterogeneity was found among the respondents. Larger-scale producers had greater preference for high masculinity/femininity, good structure and soundness, and Boer bucks.

While in the ideal world, everyone should have the same chance to succeed in a given profession, in reality, often the probability of success is different for people of different gender and/or ethnicity. For example, in the US, the probability of a female undergraduate student in computer science to get a PhD is lower than a similar probability for a male student. At first glance, it may seem that in such a situation, if we try to maximize our gain and we have a limited amount of resources, it is reasonable to concentrate on students with the higher probability of …

Supervised Classification Using Finite Mixture Copula, Sumen Sen, Norou Diawara 2017 Austin Peay State University

Supervised Classification Using Finite Mixture Copula, Sumen Sen, Norou Diawara

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Use of copula for statistical classification is recent and gaining popularity. For example, statistical classification using copula has been proposed for automatic character recognition, medical diagnostic and most recently in data mining. Classical discrimination rules assume normality. But in this data age time, this assumption is often questionable. In fact features of data could be a mixture of discrete and continues random variables. In this paper, mixture copula densities are used to model class conditional distributions. Such types of densities are useful when the marginal densities of the vector of features are not normally distributed and are of a mixed …

Uses Of The Hypergeometric Distribution For Determining Survival Or Complete Representation Of Subpopulations In Sequential Sampling, Brooke Busbee 2017 Stephen F Austin State University

Uses Of The Hypergeometric Distribution For Determining Survival Or Complete Representation Of Subpopulations In Sequential Sampling, Brooke Busbee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will explore the hypergeometric probability distribution by looking at many different aspects of the distribution. These include, and are not limited to: history and origin, derivation and elementary applications, properties, relationships to other probability models, kindred hypergeometric distributions and elements of statistical inference associated with the hypergeometric distribution. Once the above are established, an investigation into and furthering of work done by Walton (1986) and Charlambides (2005) will be done. Here, we apply the hypergeometric distribution to sequential sampling in order to determine a surviving subcategory as well as study the problem of and complete representation of the …

Identifying Three-Way Gene Interactions From Microarray Data Using Kolmogorov-Smirnov And Cross-Match Tests, Shubhashree Khadka 2017 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Identifying Three-Way Gene Interactions From Microarray Data Using Kolmogorov-Smirnov And Cross-Match Tests, Shubhashree Khadka

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Human gene network is much more complex than just pairwise interaction among the genes. Zhang et al. [6] extracted microarray data from International Genomics Consortium (IGC), and presented the detection of three-way gene interactions in their paper using Fisher’s z-transformation test. Three-way gene interactions are closer than pairwise correlations in representing the complex gene structures. Additionally, it was more tractable than assessing four or more gene interactions. In this paper, we are simulating different models where Fisher’s test might not be as effective. Zhang et al.’s approach utilized Pearson’s correlation coefficients and involved detection of linear interactions only. Since gene …
