Recent experiments and many-body calculations indicate that approximately 20% of the nucleons in medium and heavy nuclei (A ≥ 12) are part of short-range correlated (SRC) primarily neutron-proton (np) pairs. We find that using chiral dynamics to account for the formation of np pairs due to the effects of iterated and irreducible two-pion exchange leads to values consistent with the 20% level. We further apply chiral dynamics to study how these correlations influence the calculations of nuclear charge radii, that traditionally turncate their effect, to find that they are capable of introducing non-negligible effects.

This LOI includes information on possible experiments for an experimental program using a new tritium target in CLAS12. It includes several pieces, including flavor tagged DIS on d, ³He, and ³H targets, and quasielatic scattering. A preliminary feasibility study indicates that a tritium target in Hall B is possible. We are submitting this LOI to get feedback from the PAC whether it is worth the effort of developing a full proposal, including significantly more work on the possible Hall B tritium target.
The bulk of the LOI discusses the flavor-tagged DIS measurement.

"The main focus of this work is to use machine learning and data mining techniques to address some challenging problems that arise from nuclear data. Specifically, two problem areas are discussed: nuclear imaging and radiation detection. The techniques to approach these problems are primarily based on a variant of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) called Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), which is one of the most popular forms of 'deep learning' technique.
The first problem is about interpreting and analyzing 3D medical radiation images automatically. A method is developed to identify and quantify deformable image registration (DIR) errors from lung CT scans …

This contribution describes the latest milestones of a multiyear program to build and operate a compact −300 kV dc high voltage photogun with inverted insulator geometry and alkali-antimonide photocathodes. Photocathode thermal emittance measurements and quantum efficiency charge lifetime measurements at average current up to 4.5 mA are presented, as well as an innovative implementation of ion generation and tracking simulations to explain the benefits of a biased anode to repel beam line ions from the anode-cathode gap, to dramatically improve the operating lifetime of the photogun and eliminate the occurrence of micro-arc discharges.

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
Free neutron and nuclear beta decay spectroscopy serves as a robust laboratory for investigations of the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Observables such as decay product angular correlations and energy spectra overconstrain the Standard Model and serve as a sensitive probe for Beyond the Standard Model physics. Improved measurement of these quantities is necessary to complement the TeV scale physics being conducted at the Large Hadron Collider. The UCNB, 45Ca, and Nab experiments aim to improve upon existing measurements of free neutron decay angular correlations and set new limits in the search for exotic couplings in beta decay. To …

It is a well known fact that the visible universe is made almost entirely of baryonic matter. Yet, this is also one of the greatest puzzles that physicists are trying to solve: Where did all of this matter come from in the first place? The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics predicts a baryon asymmetry that is much smaller than what is observed in nature. In order to try and explain this discrepancy, Sakharov (1967) postulated three necessary conditions for baryogenesis in the early universe. One of these is the requirement that charge conjugation (C) and the product of C …

The CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer for the 12 GeV era, known as CLAS12, uses the time of flight (TOF) system to identify charged particles from scattering events between the beam and target. The TOF system is divided into two parts: The Forward time of flight system, and the Central time of flight system. These two sub-systems subtend different polar angles of the detector geometry for wide acceptance of scattered particles. Reconstruction is the service used to identify particles from the interactions between the beam and target, called as a vertex or the point where the interaction occurs. The vertex position …

The longitudinal spin transfer DLL to Λ and Λ¯ hyperons produced in high-energy polarized proton-proton collisions is expected to be sensitive to the helicity distribution functions of strange quarks and antiquarks of the proton, and to longitudinally polarized fragmentation functions. We report an improved measurement of DLL from data obtained at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 200 GeV with the STAR detector at RHIC. The data have an approximately twelve times larger figure of merit than prior results and cover |η| < 1.2 in pseudorapidity with transverse momenta pT up to 6 GeV/c. We present the first attempt to access the x dependence of the gluon unpolarized parton-distribution function (PDF), based on lattice simulations using the large-momentum effective theory approach. The lattice calculation is carried out with pion masses of 340 and 678 MeV on a (2+1)-flavor domain-wall fermion configuration with lattice spacing a = 0.111 fm, for the gluon quasi-PDF matrix element with the nucleon momentum up to 0.93 GeV. Taking the normalization from similar matrix elements in the rest frame of the nucleon and pion, our results for these matrix elements are consistent with the Fourier transform of the global fit …

Publications and Research
Scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory can be described as the probability of a scattering process to happen within a high energy particle interaction, as well as a bridge between experimental measurements and the prediction of the theory.
In this research project, we explore the Standard Model of Particle Theory, it’s representation in terms of Feynman diagrams and the algebraic formulas associated with each combination.
Using the FeynArts program as a tool for generating Feynman diagrams, we evaluate the expressions of a set of physical processes, and explain why these techniques become necessary to achieve this goal.

We report results on the proton mass decomposition and also on related quark and glue momentum fractions. The results are based on overlap valence fermions on four ensembles of Nf = 2 + 1 domain wall fermion configurations with three lattice spacings and three volumes, and several pion masses including the physical pion mass. With fully nonperturbative renormalization (and universal normalization on both quark and gluon), we find that the quark energy and glue field energy contribute 32(4)(4)% and 36(5)(4)% respectively in the MS¯ (modified minimal substraction) scheme at μ = 2 GeV. We present the first nonperturbatively renormalized determination of the glue momentum fraction ⟨x⟩g in the nucleon, based on lattice-QCD simulations at the physical pion mass using the cluster-decomposition error reduction technique. We provide the first practical strategy to renormalize the gauge energy-momentum tensor nonperturbatively in the regularization-independent momentum-subtraction (RI/MOM) scheme and convert the results to the MS¯ scheme with one-loop matching. The simulation results show that the cluster-decomposition error reduction technique can reduce the statistical uncertainty of its renormalization constant by a factor of O(300) in calculations using a typical state-of-the-art lattice volume, and the nonperturbatively …

We calculate the intrinsic quark spin contribution to the total proton spin using overlap valence quarks on three ensembles of 2 + 1-flavor RBC/UKQCD domain-wall configurations with different lattice spacings. The lowest pion mass of the ensembles is around 171 MeV, which is close to the physical point. With overlap fermions and a topological charge derived from the overlap operator, we verify the anomalous Ward identity between nucleon states with momentum transfer. Both the connected and the disconnected insertions of the axial-vector current are calculated. For the disconnected-insertion part, the cluster-decomposition error reduction technique is utilized for the lattice with …

Pair densities and associated correlation functions provide a critical tool for introducing many-body correlations into a wide-range of effective theories. Ab initio calculations show that two-nucleon pairdensities exhibit strong spin and isospin dependence. However, such calculations are not available for all nuclei of current interest. We therefore provide a simple model, which involves combining the short and long separation distance behavior using a single blending function, to accurately describe the two nucleon correlations inherent in existing ab initio calculations. We show that the salient features of the correlation function arise from the features of the two-body short-range nuclear interaction, and …

The Gamow-Teller (GT) matrix element contributing to tritium β decay is calculated with trinucleon wave functions obtained from hyperspherical-harmonics solutions of the Schrödinger equation with the chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions including Δ intermediate states that have recently been constructed in configuration space. Predictions up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO) in the chiral expansion of the axial current (with Δ's) overestimate the empirical value by 1–4%. By exploiting the relation between the low-energy constant (LEC) in the contact three-nucleon interaction and two-body axial current, we provide new determinations of the LECs cD and cE that characterize this interaction by fitting the …
