Numeracy
This text of the opening plenary address to the 2011 Summit of the Appalachian College Association and the meeting of the National Numeracy Network makes an argument that quantitative reasoning and writing should be taught together. The argument is set up by noting that humanists have historically banished quantitative issues from their study of the liberal arts and that science, engineering, and mathematics education suffers from lack of approaches to learning that promote complex, deeper understanding, most notably integrative and reflective learning. Therefore, everyone would profit from combining writing and quantitative reasoning. Five more specific reasons are discussed, drawing evidence …

Period Life Tables: A Resource For Quantitative Literacy, Thomas J. Pfaff, Stanley Seltzer
Numeracy
A period life table provides an estimate of the probability that a person will die at a particular age. Using data available online, we examine tables of expected years to live for males and females against age for three populations: the United States in 2007, the U.S. at the turn of the twentieth century, and the Roman Empire. Scatter plots of males and females for each population show how life expectancy increases with age (e.g., U.S. 2007: 50 year-old female > 40 year-old female > 45 year-old male). The three data sets allow historical comparisons (e.g., of gender disparity, larger now; of …

Motivation For Achievement And Attitudes Toward Mathematics Instruction In A Required Calculus Course At The Norwegian University Of Science And Technology, Donna Sundre, Carol Barry, Vidar Gynnild, Erin Tangen Ostgard
Numeracy
This study from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) examines students’ learning goals and attitudes toward mathematics in a first-year calculus course in undergraduate engineering education. Achievement motivation research using the Achievement Goal Questionnaire (AGQ) is advanced from current literature with two additions: (1) a course specific context using introductory college calculus students, and (2) participation of Norwegian students.
Pre- and posttest measures of attitudes indicate that students do change learning goals over time, unfortunately opposite to the instructors’ aspirations. A significant increase in “Mastery Avoidance” and “Work Avoidance” was accompanied with a drop in “Mastery Approach” and …

Quantitative Literacy Interventions At University Of Cape Town: Effects Of Separation From Academic Disciplines, Vera Frith
Numeracy
The aim of the Numeracy Centre at the University of Cape Town is to develop students’ quantitative literacy (QL) in a manner consistent with their programmes of study and intended roles in the community. Our theoretical perspective on the nature of QL is in line with that of the New Literacies Studies and sees academic QL as practices in different academic disciplinary contexts. This means that for us the ideal curriculum structure for developing QL would fully integrate it into the teaching of the disciplines. This is in practice not achievable in most cases, especially since many students do not …

Numeracy, Financial Literacy, And Financial Decision-Making, Annamaria Lusardi
Numeracy
Financial decisions, be they related to asset building or debt management, require the capacity to do calculations, including some complex ones. But how numerate are individuals, in particular when it comes to calculations related to financial decisions? Studies and surveys implemented in both the United States and in other countries that are described in this paper show the level of numeracy among the population to be very low. Moreover, lack of numeracy is not only widespread but is particularly severe among some demographic groups, such as women, the elderly, and those with low educational attainment. This has potential consequences for …

Numeracy
One of the advantages of focusing on quantitative reasoning is that it spans a wide variety of topics. As incoming president of the National Numeracy Network, I would like to take the opportunity of this editorial to tell my story of intellectual reward from finding common purpose in quantitative reasoning with colleagues from disciplines outside of mathematics. The story starts with an NSF-funded faculty development project (DUE-9952807) to further a QR across-the-curriculum program and the finding from that program that merging authentic context with mathematics brings interaction and collaboration. That joy in learning from and working with colleagues in other …

Part I: Let (M,g) be a n dimensional smooth, compact, and connected Riemannian manifold without boundary, consider the partial differential equation on M:
-Δu=Λu,
in which Δ is the Laplace-Beltrami operator. That is, u is an eigenfunction with eigenvalue Λ. We analyze the asymptotic behavior of eigenfunctions as Λ go to ∞ (i.e., limit of high energy states) in terms of the following aspects.
(1) Local and global properties of eigenfunctions, including several crucial estimates for further investigation.
(2) Write the nodal set of u as N={u=0}, estimate the size of N using Hausdorff measure. Particularly, surrounding the conjecture that …

Dartmouth Scholarship
Using an unprecedented technique involving diagonals of non-rational generating functions, we prove that among the permutations of length $n$ with $i$ fixed points and $j$ excedances, the number of 321-avoiding ones equals the number of 132-avoiding ones, for any given $i,j$. Our theorem generalizes a result of Robertson, Saracino and Zeilberger. Even though bijective proofs have later been found by the author jointly with Pak and with Deutsch, this paper contains the original analytic proof that was presented at FPSAC 2003.

In this paper we describe a procedure for calculating the number of regular octahedra, RO(n), which have vertices with coordinates in the set {0, 1, ..., n}. As a result, we introduce a new sequence in The Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (A178797) and list the first one hundred terms of it. We improve the method appeared in [12] which was used to find the number of regular tetrahedra with coordinates of their vertices in {0, 1, ..., n}. A new fact proved here helps increasing considerably the speed of all programs used before. The procedure is put together in …

Differential weighting promises to improve the validity of a measure. This study examines whether similar results would be found using weighted, unweighted and standardized z scores from the All Stars Core survey. It was concluded that the weighted systems were developed to equate the questions within the scales and to ease the process for customers without access to data analysis programs; however, the standardized scores were the more appropriate method for equating the test items.

A Generalized Birkhoff-Rott Equation For Two-Dimensional Active Scalar Problems, Hui Sun, David Uminsky, Andrea L. Bertozzi
Mathematics
In this paper we derive evolution equations for the two-dimensional active scalar problem when the solution is supported on one-dimensional curves. These equations are a generalization of the Birkhoff–Rott equation when vorticity is the active scalar. The formulation is Lagrangian and it is valid for nonlocal kernels K that may include both a gradient and an incompressible term. We develop a numerical method for implementing the model which achieves second order convergence in space and fourth order in time. We verify the model by simulating classic active scalar problems such as the vortex sheet problem (in the case of inviscid, …

Network-Based Criterion For The Success Of Cooperation In An Evolutionary Prisoner's Dilemma, Stephen Devlin, T Treloar
Mathematics
We consider an evolutionary prisoner's dilemma on a random network. We introduce a simple quantitative network-based parameter and show that it effectively predicts the success of cooperation in simulations on the network. The criterion is shown to be accurate on a variety of networks with degree distributions ranging from regular to Poisson to scale free. The parameter allows for comparisons of random networks regardless of their underlying topology. Finally, we draw analogies between the criterion for the success of cooperation introduced here and existing criteria in other contexts.

Convergence And Energy Landscape For Cheeger Cut Clustering, X Bresson, T Laurent, David Uminsky, J Von Brecht
Mathematics
This paper provides both theoretical and algorithmic results for the l 1-relaxation of the Cheeger cut problem. The l2- relaxation, known as spectral clustering, only loosely relates to the Cheeger cut; however, it is convex and leads to a simple optimization problem. The l1-relaxation, in contrast, is non-convex but is provably equivalent to the original problem. The l1-relaxation therefore trades convexity for exactness, yielding improved clustering results at the cost of a more challenging optimization. The first challenge is understanding convergence of algorithms. This paper provides the first complete proof of convergence for …

The Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA) is a well known system identification and model reduction algorithm for discrete time systems. Recently, Ma, Ahuja, and Rowley (Theoret. Comput. Fluid Dyn. 25(1) : 233-247, 2011) showed that ERA is theoretically equivalent to the balanced POD algorithm for model reduction of discrete time systems. We propose an ERA for model reduction of continuous time linear partial differential equation systems. The algorithm differs from other existing approaches as it is based on a direct approximation of the Hankel integral operator of the system. We show that the algorithm produces accurate balanced reduced order models for …

Bats possess arrays of distributed flow-sensitive hair-like mechanoreceptors on their dorsal and ventral wing surfaces. Bat wing hair receptors are known to play a significant role in flight maneuverability and are directionally most sensitive to reversed flow over the wing. in this work, we consider the mechanics of flexible hair-like structures for the time accurate detection and visualization of hydrodynamic images associated with unsteady near surface flow phenomena. a nonlinear viscoelastic model of a hair-like structure coupled to an unsteady nonuniform flow is proposed. Writing the hair model in nondimensional form, we identify five dimensionless groups that govern hair behavior. …

We present a linear numerical scheme for a model of epitaxial thin film growth without slope selection. the PDE, which is a nonlinear, fourth-order parabolic equation, is the L2 gradient flow of the energy ∫Ω(-1/2 ln(1 + |ø|2) + ε2 2 |Ø(x)|2) dx. the idea of convex-concave decomposition of the energy functional is applied, which results in a numerical scheme that is unconditionally energy stable, i.e., energy dissipative. the particular decomposition used here places the nonlinear term in the concave part of the energy, in contrast to a previous convexity splitting scheme. as a result, the numerical scheme is fully …
