Essays In The Economics Of Environmental Policy., Ashokankur Datta Dr. 2012 Indian Statistical Institute

Essays In The Economics Of Environmental Policy., Ashokankur Datta Dr.

Doctoral Theses

It is increasingly being accepted that the planet we live in is unable to fulfill the enormous resource demands that mankind places on it. As a result the environment we live in has undergone rapid changes in the last two centuries - changes that adversely affects human life. Long ago Thomas Malthus and more recently the Club of Rome researchers warned that rapid economic and population growth were going to be unsustainable as they are going to create an acute shortage of food and vital metals like mercury. Their predictions never passed the test of time (Sterner, 2003). However their …

Hadamard Renormalisation Of The Stress Energy Tensor On The Horizons Of A Spherically Symmetric Black Hole Space-Time, Cormac Breen, Adrian Ottewill 2012 Technological University Dublin

Hadamard Renormalisation Of The Stress Energy Tensor On The Horizons Of A Spherically Symmetric Black Hole Space-Time, Cormac Breen, Adrian Ottewill

Articles

We consider a quantum field which is in a Hartle-Hawking state propagating in a general spherically symmetric black hole space-time. We make use of uniform approximations to the radial equation to calculate the components of the stress tensor, renormalized using the Hadamard form of the Green's function, on the horizons of this space-time. We then specialize these results to the case of the `lukewarm' Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black hole and derive some conditions on the stress tensor for the regularity of the Hartle-Hawking state

On FoxʼS M-Dimensional Category And Theorems Of Bochner Type, John Oprea, Jeff Strom 2012 Cleveland State University

On FoxʼS M-Dimensional Category And Theorems Of Bochner Type, John Oprea, Jeff Strom

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We show that cat M (X)=Cat (jm),where cat m(X) is Fox’s m-dimensional category, jm:X→X [m] is the mth Postnikov section of X and cat (X) is the Lusternik–Schnirelmann category of X. This characterization is used to give new “Bochner-type” bounds on the rank of the Gottlieb group and the first Betti number for manifolds of non-negative Ricci curvature. Finally, we apply these methods to obtain Bochner-type theorems for manifolds of almost non-negative sectional curvature.

Combinatorics Using Computational Methods, Derrick Stolee 2012 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Combinatorics Using Computational Methods, Derrick Stolee

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Computational combinatorics involves combining pure mathematics, algorithms, and computational resources to solve problems in pure combinatorics. This thesis provides a theoretical framework for combinatorial search, which is then applied to several problems in combinatorics. Some results in space-bounded computational complexity are also presented.

Lecture Hall Sequences, Q-Series, And Asymmetric Partition Identities, Sylvie Corteel, Carla D. Savage, Andrew Sills 2012 Université Paris-Sud

Lecture Hall Sequences, Q-Series, And Asymmetric Partition Identities, Sylvie Corteel, Carla D. Savage, Andrew Sills

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

We use generalized lecture hall partitions to discover a new pair of q-series identities. These identities are unusual in that they involve partitions into parts from asymmetric residue classes, much like the little Göllnitz partition theorems. We derive a two-parameter generalization of our identities that, surprisingly, gives new analytic counterparts of the little Göllnitz theorems. Finally, we show that the little Göllnitz theorems also involve “lecture hall sequences,” that is, sequences constrained by the ratio of consecutive parts.

Quadratic Spline Approximation Of The Newsvendor Problem Optimal Cost Function, Christina Marie Burton 2012 Brigham Young University - Provo

Quadratic Spline Approximation Of The Newsvendor Problem Optimal Cost Function, Christina Marie Burton

Theses and Dissertations

We consider a single-product dynamic inventory problem where the demand distributions in each period are known and independent but with density. We assume the lead time and the fixed cost for ordering are zero and that there are no capacity constraints. There is a holding cost and a backorder cost for unfulfilled demand, which is backlogged until it is filled by another order. The problem may be nonstationary, and in fact our approximation of the optimal cost function using splines is most advantageous when demand falls suddenly. In this case the myopic policy, which is most often used in practice …

Exploring The On-Line Partitioning Of Posets Problem, Leah F. Rosenbaum 2012 Scripps College

Exploring The On-Line Partitioning Of Posets Problem, Leah F. Rosenbaum

Scripps Senior Theses

One question relating to partially ordered sets (posets) is that of partitioning or dividing the poset's elements into the fewest number of chains that span the poset. In 1950, Dilworth established that the width of the poset - the size of the largest set composed only of incomparable elements - is the minimum number of chains needed to partition that poset. Such a bound in on-line partitioning has been harder to establish, and work has evalutated classes of posets based on their width. This paper reviews the theorems that established val(2)=5 and illustrates them with examples. It also covers some …

Subdivision Rules, 3-Manifolds, And Circle Packings, Brian Craig Rushton 2012 Brigham Young University - Provo

Subdivision Rules, 3-Manifolds, And Circle Packings, Brian Craig Rushton

Theses and Dissertations

We study the relationship between subdivision rules, 3-dimensional manifolds, and circle packings. We find explicit subdivision rules for closed right-angled hyperbolic manifolds, a large family of hyperbolic manifolds with boundary, and all 3-manifolds of the E^3,H^2 x R, S^2 x R, SL_2(R), and S^3 geometries (up to finite covers). We define subdivision rules in all dimensions and find explicit subdivision rules for the n-dimensional torus as an example in each dimension. We define a graph and space at infinity for all subdivision rules, and use that to show that all subdivision rules for non-hyperbolic manifolds have mesh not going to …

What Mathematics Do Elementary Education Teachers Need To Know?, Bret Benesh 2012 College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University

What Mathematics Do Elementary Education Teachers Need To Know?, Bret Benesh

Forum, 2012 Spring

Almost no one is happy with the state of America's mathematics education. I examine the mathematics textbooks elementary education majors commonly use in college to determine what effect this might be having on their future elementary school students. In this Thursday Forum, I report on what I found in these textbooks---and why I do not like them. I then supply an alternative vision that would better serve our elementary school students.

On Soliton Interactions For A Hierarchy Of Generalized Heisenberg Ferromagnetic Models On Su(3)/S(U(1) $\Times$ U(2)) Symmetric Space, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Georgi Grahovski, Alexander Mikhailov, Tihomir Valchev

Articles

We consider an integrable hierarchy of nonlinear evolution equations (NLEE) related to linear bundle Lax operator L. The Lax representation is Z2 \times Z2 reduced and is naturally associated with the symmetric space SU(3)/S(U(1) \times U(2)). The simplest nontrivial equation in the hierarchy is a generalization of Heisenberg ferromagnetic model. We construct the N-soliton solutions for an arbitrary member of the hierarchy by using the Zakharov-Shabat dressing method with an appropriately chosen dressing factor. Two types of soliton solutions: quadruplet and doublet solitons are found. The one-soliton solutions of NLEEs with even and odd dispersion laws have different properties. In …

Temporal Topos And U-Singularities, Goro C. Kato 2012 California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo

Temporal Topos And U-Singularities, Goro C. Kato

Mathematics

Several papers and books by C. Isham, C.Isham-A. Doering, F. Van Oystaeyen, A.Mallios-I. Raptis, C. Mulvey, and Guts and Grinkevich, have been published on the methods of categories and sheaves to study quantum gravity. Needless to say, there are well-written treatises on quantum gravity whose methods are non-categorical and non-sheaf theoretic. This paper may be one of the first papers explaining the methods of sheaves with minimally required background that retains experimental applications. Temporal topos (t-topos) is related to the topos approach to quantum gravity being developed by Prof. Chris Isham of the Oxford-Imperial research group (with its foundations inthe …

Undergraduate Students' Self-Reported Use Of Mathematics Textbooks, Aaron Weinberg, Emilie Wiesner, Bret Benesh, Timothy Boester 2012 College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University

Undergraduate Students' Self-Reported Use Of Mathematics Textbooks, Aaron Weinberg, Emilie Wiesner, Bret Benesh, Timothy Boester

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Textbooks play an important role in undergraduate mathematics courses and have the potential to impact student learning. However, there have been few studies that describe students' textbook use in detail. In this study, 1156 undergraduate students in introductory mathematics classes were surveyed, and asked to describe how they used their textbook. The results indicate that students tend to use examples, instead of the expository text, to build their mathematical understanding, which instructors may view as problematic. This way of using the textbook may be the result of the textbook structure itself, as well as students' beliefs about reading and the …
