Professional Learning Community Impacts On Student Achievement In Middle School Mathematics, Jessica Stuewe
Mathematics Graduate Theses
The development of professional learning communities in middle level education is a relatively new and trendy concept sweeping the nation. School professional development committees are training large numbers of teachers through conferences, book studies and online webinars on how to collaborate to improve student learning. This research will explore the impact of the first year of implementation of a departmental professional learning community (PLC) on student achievement at the middle school level in the content area of mathematics. Student standardized test scores from 2010 and 2011 will be compared as a measure of success of the PLC. Teacher surveys are …

Improving Education Of Mathematics Majors, Goran Lesaja
Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Presentations (1991-2022)
In this talk we will explore and discuss different ways of improving instruction of upper level mathematics classes. Several case studies will be presented, including in Calculus and Operations Research courses. We will also discuss the importance of extracurricular activities in education of mathematics majors. In particular, we will describe activities related to undergraduate mathematics competitions.

A Common Framework For Restriction Semigroups And Regular *-Semigroups, Peter R. Jones
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Left restriction semigroups have appeared at the convergence of several flows of research, including the theories of abstract semigroups, of partial mappings, of closure operations and even in logic. For instance, they model unary semigroups of partial mappings on a set, where the unary operation takes a map to the identity map on its domain. This perspective leads naturally to dual and two-sided versions of the restriction property. From a varietal perspective, these classes of semigroups–more generally, the corresponding classes of Ehresmann semigroups–derive from reducts of inverse semigroups, now taking a to a+=aa−1 (or, dually, …
A Cautionary Note On Generalized Linear Models For Covariance Of Unbalanced Longitudinal Data,

A Cautionary Note On Generalized Linear Models For Covariance Of Unbalanced Longitudinal Data, Jianhua Z. Huang, Min Chen, Mehdi Maadooliat, Mohsen Pourahmadi
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Missing data in longitudinal studies can create enormous challenges in data analysis when coupled with the positive-definiteness constraint on a covariance matrix. For complete balanced data, the Cholesky decomposition of a covariance matrix makes it possible to remove the positive-definiteness constraint and use a generalized linear model setup to jointly model the mean and covariance using covariates (Pourahmadi, 2000). However, this approach may not be directly applicable when the longitudinal data are unbalanced, as coherent regression models for the dependence across all times and subjects may not exist. Within the existing generalized linear model framework, we show how to overcome …

What Mathematics Do Elementary Education Teachers Need To Know?, Bret Benesh
Forum Lectures
Almost no one is happy with the state of America's mathematics education. I examine the mathematics textbooks elementary education majors commonly use in college to determine what effect this might be having on their future elementary school students. In this Thursday Forum, I report on what I found in these textbooks---and why I do not like them. I then supply an alternative vision that would better serve our elementary school students.

We consider an integrable hierarchy of nonlinear evolution equations (NLEE) related to linear bundle Lax operator L. The Lax representation is Z2 \times Z2 reduced and is naturally associated with the symmetric space SU(3)/S(U(1) \times U(2)). The simplest nontrivial equation in the hierarchy is a generalization of Heisenberg ferromagnetic model. We construct the N-soliton solutions for an arbitrary member of the hierarchy by using the Zakharov-Shabat dressing method with an appropriately chosen dressing factor. Two types of soliton solutions: quadruplet and doublet solitons are found. The one-soliton solutions of NLEEs with even and odd dispersion laws have different properties. In …

Ball Remotality In Banach Spaces And Related Topics., Tanmoy Paul
Doctoral Theses
In this project we aim to study Ball Remotality and densely Ball Remotality of subspaces in Banach spaces. We study this property in many classical spaces of type c0, c,\\â„“p and C(K) where K is a compact Hausdorff space. The said problem also discussed for Banach spaces when considered as a subspace in its bidual. It is observed M-ideals in C(K) are densely ball remotal. It is shown that a particular type of M-ideal in A(K) where K is a Choquet simplex is densely ball remotal.

Some Results On Cryptanalysis Of Rsa And Factorization., Santanu Sarkar Dr.
Doctoral Theses
In this thesis, we propose some new results in Cryptanalysis of RSA and related Factorization problems. Till date, the best known algorithm to solve the Integer Factorization problem is the Number Field Sieve, which has a runtime greater than exp(log1/3 N) for factoring an integer N. However, if one obtains certain information about the RSA parameters, there are algorithms which can factor the RSA modulus N = pq quite efficiently. The intention of this thesis is to identify such weaknesses of the RSA cryptosystem and its variants. Further we study results related to factorization. In Africacrypt 2008, Nitaj presented a class …

We present the functionalized Cahn-Hilliard (FCH) energy, a continuum characterization of interfacial energy whose minimizers describe the network morphology of solvated functionalized polymer membranes. With a small set of parameters the FCH characterizes bilayer, pore-like, and micelle network structures. The gradient flows derived from the FCH describe the interactions between these structures, including the merging and pinch-off of endcaps and formation of junctions central to the generation of network morphologies. We couple the FCH gradient flow to a model of ionic transport which incorporates entropic effects to localize counter-ions, yielding a flow which dissipates a total free energy, and an …
