Dissertations - ALL

Traditional data acquisition methods in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) collect a subset of the total amount of generated data and discard the rest. In this work, a modified approach toward NMR data acquisition and analysis is formalized and applied in a series of different contexts, ultimately illustrating the utility of collecting and considering this traditionally discarded data. In particular, it is shown that this approach both facilitates and improves NMR data acquisition capabilities at low field (15 MHz), enabling one to overcome challenges arising from, for example, fluctuations in the static magnetic field. With these developments in hand, the dual resonance …

Quantum Computations And Molecular Dynamics Simulations: From The Fundamentals Of Antimicrobial Resistance To Neurological Diseases, Angel Tamez 2022 Duquesne University

Quantum Computations And Molecular Dynamics Simulations: From The Fundamentals Of Antimicrobial Resistance To Neurological Diseases, Angel Tamez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Biophysical phenomena are modeled using a combination of quantum and classical methods to interpret and supplement three distinct and diverse problems in this dissertation. In the first project, decarboxylation reactions are ubiquitous across chemical and biological disciplines, yet the origin of non-catalytic solvent effects remains elusive. Specific solvent structure and energetics have not been well described for the monoanion of malonate, nor corrected from the gas-phase charge-assisted intramolecular hydrogen bond model known as “pseudochair”. In the aqueous phase, a low-lying energy conformer known as the “orthogonal conformation” is computed to be preferred by a three-water cluster of hydrogen bonding over …

Molecular Insights Into The Redox Of Atmospheric Mercury Through Laser Spectroscopy, Rongrong Wu Cohen 2022 Mississippi State University

Molecular Insights Into The Redox Of Atmospheric Mercury Through Laser Spectroscopy, Rongrong Wu Cohen

Theses and Dissertations

The widespread pollution of mercury motivates research into its atmospheric chemistry and transport. Gaseous elemental mercury (Hg(0)) dominates mercury emission to the atmosphere, but the rate of its oxidation to mercury compound (Hg(II)) plays a significant role in controlling where and when mercury deposits to ecosystems. Atomic bromine is regarded as the main oxidant for Hg(0) oxidation, known to initiate the oxidation via a two-step process in the atmosphere – formation of BrHg (R1) and subsequent reactions of BrHg with abundant free radicals Y, i.e., NO2, HOO, etc. (R2), where the reaction of BrHg +Y could also lead to the …

Hydrogen Bonding In Small Model Peptides; The Dft And Mp2 Study, Gracie Smith, Martina Kaledin 2022 Kennesaw State University

Hydrogen Bonding In Small Model Peptides; The Dft And Mp2 Study, Gracie Smith, Martina Kaledin

Symposium of Student Scholars

Formamide is a small model compound for the study of the peptide bond. The peptide bond links amino acids together, specifies rigidity to the protein backbone, and includes the essential docking sites for hydrogen-bond-mediated protein folding and protein aggregation, namely, the C=O acceptor and the N-H donor parts. Therefore, the infrared C=O (amide-I) and N-H (amide-A) vibrations provide sensitive and widely used probes into the structure of peptides. This computational chemistry work, we study hydrogen bonds in formamide dimer isomers. We evaluate the accuracy of the density functional theory (DFT) and many-body perturbation theory to the 2nd order (MP2) …

Turning Ligands On Their Side: Computational Investigation Into The Binding Of N2o And N2 In Transition Metal Complexes, Cole Donald 2022 Stephen F Austin State University

Turning Ligands On Their Side: Computational Investigation Into The Binding Of N2o And N2 In Transition Metal Complexes, Cole Donald

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Common greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) is a thermodynamically potent and environmentally benign oxidant, making it a desirable target for metal center activation. Unfortunately, N2O is a poor ligand for transition metals due to its weak sigma-donating and pi-accepting properties; as a result, few transition metal complexes capable of interacting with N2O have been found. As the primary source of all nitrogen in organisms, abundant gas dinitrogen (N2) is a crucially important tiny molecule and an essential part of daily existence. However, due to its inertness, it has limited practical uses in …

Perfect Polar Alignment Of Parallel Beloamphiphile Monolayers: Synthesis, Characterization, And Crystal Architectures Of Unsymmetrical Phenoxy-Substituted Acetophenone Azines, Harmeet Bhoday, Michael Lewis, Steven P. Kelley, Rainer Glaser 2022 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Perfect Polar Alignment Of Parallel Beloamphiphile Monolayers: Synthesis, Characterization, And Crystal Architectures Of Unsymmetrical Phenoxy-Substituted Acetophenone Azines, Harmeet Bhoday, Michael Lewis, Steven P. Kelley, Rainer Glaser

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

It remains a great challenge to achieve polar order in organic molecular crystals because anti-parallel alignment of side-by-side molecules is intrinsically preferred. We have addressed this problem with a rational design that focuses on the polar stacking of parallel beloamphiphile monolayers (PBAMs) with strong lateral quadrupole-quadrupole attractions. We employ arene-arene interactions as lateral synthons. The first successes were achieved with unsymmetrical donor (X), acceptor (Y) substituted acetophenone azines which form polar PBAMs with double T-contacts between the azines. Near-perfect alignment was achieved with the methoxy series of (MeO, Y)-azines with Y=Cl, Br, I. Here, we report on the synthesis, the …

Efficient Interface Enabled By Nano-Hydroxyapatite@Porous Carbon For Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Jia-Yu Wang, Xue-Feng Tong, Qi-Fan Peng, Yue-Peng Guan, Wei-Kun Wang, An-Bang Wang, Nai-Qiang Liu, Ya-Qin Huang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The dissolution and “shuttle effect” of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) hinder the application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. To solve those problems, inspired by natural materials, a nano-hydroxyapatite@porous carbon derived from chicken cartilage (nano-HA@CCPC) was fabricated by employing a simple pre-carbonization and carbonization method, and applied in Li-S batteries. The nano-HA@CCPC would provide a reactive interface that allows efficient LiPSs reduction. With a strong affinity for LiPSs and an excellent electronic conductive path for converting LiPSs, the shuttle effect of LiPSs was confined and the redox kinetics of LiPSs was substantially enhanced. Li-S batteries employing nano-HA@CCPC-modified separators exhibited long cycle life and …

Review On Oxygen-Free Vanadium-Based Cathodes For Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries, Xiao-Ru Yun, Yu-Fang Chen, Pei-Tao Xiao, Chun-Man Zheng 2022 College of Aerospace Science and Engineering, National University of Defense Technology, Changsha, Hunan, 410073, China;

Review On Oxygen-Free Vanadium-Based Cathodes For Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries, Xiao-Ru Yun, Yu-Fang Chen, Pei-Tao Xiao, Chun-Man Zheng

Journal of Electrochemistry

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are considered as one of the most promising next-generation electrochemical energy storage systems owing to their high-power density, environmental benign, intrinsic safety, and the low cost of the abundant zinc resources. However, their further development is still plagued by the inferior electrochemical performance of cathode materials. Though extensive research has been conducted to investigate various cathode materials (including manganese oxides, vanadium oxides, Prussian blues analogy, and organic materials), design of high-performance cathodes with satisfying capacity and long-term cycling stability still faces great challenges. Oxygen-free vanadium-based compounds, owing to their better conductivity, larger interlayer spacing, lower ion …

Which Factor Dominates Battery Performance: Metal Ion Solvation Structure-Derived Interfacial Behavior Or Solid Electrolyte Interphase Layer?, Hao-Ran Cheng, Zheng Ma, Ying-Jun Guo, Chun-Sheng Sun, Qian Li, Jun Ming

Journal of Electrochemistry

Solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer formed on the electrode by electrolyte decomposition has been considered to be one of the most important factors affecting the battery performance. We discover that the metal ion solvation structure can also influence the performance, particularly, it can elucidate many phenomena that the SEI cannot. In this review, we summarize the importance of the metal ion solvation structure and the derived metal ion de-solvation behaviors, by which we can build an interfacial model to show the relationship between the interfacial behavior and electrode performance, and then apply to different electrode and battery systems. We emphasize the …

Advances And Atomistic Insights Of Electrolytes For Lithium-Ion Batteries And Beyond, Tingzheng Hou, Xiang Chen, Lu Jiang, Cheng Tang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Electrolytes and the associated electrode-electrolyte interfaces are crucial for the development and application of high-capacity energy storage systems. Specifically, a variety of electrolyte properties, ranging from mechanical (compressibility, viscosity), thermal (heat conductivity and capacity), to chemical (solubility, activity, reactivity), transport, and electrochemical (interfacial and interphasial), are correlated to the performance of the resultant full energy storage device. In order to facilitate the operation of novel electrode materials, extensive experimental efforts have been devoted to improving these electrolyte properties by tuning the physical design and/or chemical composition. Meanwhile, the recent development of theoretical modeling methods is providing atomistic understandings of the …

Insight Into The Effects Of Cation Disorder And Surface Chemical Residues On The Initial Coulombic Efficiency Of Layered Oxide Cathode, Jin-Li Liu, Han-Feng Wu, Zhi-Bei Liu, Ying-Qiang Wu, Li Wang, Feng-Li Bei, Xiang-Ming He

Journal of Electrochemistry

Lithium layered oxide LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 (NCM622) is one of the most promising cathode materials in high-energy lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. However, one drawback for NCM622 is that its initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) is only about 87%, which is at least 6% lower than that of LiCoO2 or LiFePO4. In this work, we investigated the effects of surface chemical residues (e.g., LiOH and Li2CO3) and Li/Ni cation disorder resulted during the sintering on the ICE. We found that the ICE of the as-prepared samples could be boosted …

We report a novel method to reversibly attach and detach hydrogen molecules to positively charged sodium clusters formed inside a helium nanodroplet host matrix. It is based on the controlled production of multiply charged helium droplets which, after picking up sodium atoms and exposure to H2 vapor, lead to the formation of Nam+(H2)n clusters, whose population was accurately measured using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The mass spectra reveal particularly favorable Na+(H2)n and Na2+(H2)n clusters for specific “magic” numbers of attached hydrogen molecules. …

Theoretical Studies Of Molecule-Surface Interactions And Dynamics, Yingqi Wang 2022 University of New Mexico - Main Campus

Theoretical Studies Of Molecule-Surface Interactions And Dynamics, Yingqi Wang

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Gas-surface scattering involves the conversion of energy in different forms in the impinging molecule, possible bond breaking and forming, and the energy transfer across gas-solid interface. Possible energy dissipation channels include adiabatic energy transfer to the motion of surface phonons and non-adiabatic interactions with surface electron-hole pairs. A complete understanding of the interplay of energy dissipation and physical/chemical changes in the molecule is vital for many important applications such as materials fabrication and heterogenous catalysis.

Gas-surface encounters may occur where non-adiabatic effects are negligible. Two such systems were investigated, both with ample experimental data. One is concerned with the scattering …

The bimolecular reaction of Criegee intermediates, zwitterionic carbonyl oxide species produced in alkene ozonolysis, with organic acids leads to formation of functional hydroperoxides implicated in the generation of atmospheric aerosols. This theoretical study using high-level explicitly correlated coupled-cluster theory examines the low energy conformers of hydroperoxyethyl formate [HOOCH(CH3)OCHO, HPEF] formed in the bimolecular reaction of CH3CHOO, a simple alkyl-substituted Criegee intermediate, with formic acid, and the detection of HPEF via photoionization. The vertical and adiabatic ionization energies of HPEF are computed, along with the pathways for dissociative ionization that produce HO2 or OCHO fragments with …

Agricultural Aerosols: The Impact Of Farming Activity On Ice Nucleating Particles, Joseph Robinson 2022 Purdue University

Agricultural Aerosols: The Impact Of Farming Activity On Ice Nucleating Particles, Joseph Robinson

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Farming activities cause particles such as soil dust and plant material to be emitted into the air. Some of these aerosols can become ice nucleating particles (INPs), serving as seeds for ice and mixed-phase clouds. While there have been ground-based studies of these particles in the western Great Plains and a single air-based study in Indiana, there is a distinct lack of ground-based studies in the Midwest. In Indiana, over two-thirds of the state is farmland, with over 75% of land in Tippecanoe County used for agriculture. Despite farming being such an essential part of life in Indiana, the connection …

Electrochemical Syntheses Of Nanomaterials And Small Molecules For Electrolytic Hydrogen Production, Jia-Qi Wei, Xiao-Dong Chen, Shu-Zhou Li

Journal of Electrochemistry

Hydrogen is a clean, efficient, renewable energy resource and the most promising alternative to fossil fuels for future carbon-neutral energy supply. Therefore, sustainable hydrogen production is highly attractive and urgently demanded, especially via water electrolysis that has clean, abundant precursors and zero emission. However, current water electrolysis is hindered by the sluggish kinetics and low cost/energy efficiency of both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this regard, electrochemical synthesis offers prospects to raise the efficiency and benefit of water electrolysis by fabricating advanced electrocatalysts and providing more efficient/value-adding co-electrolysis alternatives. It is an eco-friendly and facile …
