The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
The field of organic semiconductors have gained enormous attention the past few decades. Organic materials offer numerous advantages over their inorganic counterparts. Recently a number of works have demonstrated organic semiconductors with healable properties. We aim to investigate the healable ability of an organic semiconductor by mimicking a vitrimer system through the reversible dioxaborolane bond. Vitrimers are polymers with reversible crosslink system. It has been reported that the use of the borane-oxygen bond as the crosslink showed good mechanical performance. The electrical properties will be inspected for the vitrimer-like polymer. In this report we describe a Diketopyrrolopyrrole base polymer incorporating …

Chiral boronic esters are valuable synthetic intermediates widely used in a variety of stereospecific transformations. Transition metal-catalyzed asymmetric hydroboration (CAHB) of alkenes is among the most popular methods for their preparation. Enantioselective hydroboration of activated alkenes (i.e., vinyl arene derivatives or conjugated carbonyl compounds) have been extensively studied by many research groups. We, on the other hand, are interested in enantioselective hydroboration of unactivated alkenes utilizing coordinating functional groups (e.g., carbonyl derivatives) to give functionalized, chiral boronic esters. While conjugate addition and C–H activation methodologies provide efficient alternatives to CAHB for enantioselective beta-borylation of carbonyl compounds, direct gamma- and delta-borylations …

In the field of chemistry there is a growing demand for small molecule organocatalysts such as amino acids, more specifically proline and its analogues, which could catalyze various key chemical reactions in the synthesis of several biologically important molecules. Even though natural proline is reported to catalyze various chemical reactions, its use as organocatalyst is limited mainly due to the solubility issues in the reaction media and high catalyst loadings, which is not very ideal for bulk scale manufacturing. To address these limitations we planned to develop unnatural analogues of proline that could catalyze the reactions with lower catalyst loadings …

A Novel Method For Synthesis Of Hydroxytyrosol, Emmanuel Onobun
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hydroxytyrosol, 3,4-dihydroxyphenolethanol, a naturally occurring polyphenol most common in olive tree (Olea europaea), is one of the most effective member of the polyphenols family, because of its remarkable antioxidant activity, its ability to inhibit oxidation of low density lipids (LDL), and its protection against DNA oxidative damage. Hydroxytyrosol, which is widely used in cosmetics and food supplements industries, can be purchased as an olive oil extract that contains low concentration of hydroxytyrosol besides other polyphenols. The price and low natural abundance of hydroxytyrosol make alternative synthetic sources very attractive. In this research, a novel method for the synthesis of pure …

Ab Initio Methyl Linoleate Bond Dissociation Energies: First Principles Fishing For Wise Crack Products, Zachary Ryan Wilson
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
With the prices of petroleum reflecting demand for this finite resource, attention has been turned to alternative sources of energy. Biodiesel, defined as fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs), exhibits many of the same properties as conventional diesel but is derived from biological sources. FAMEs are subsequently thermally cracked to form more light-weight petrochemical products. I aim to further understand the thermal cracking procedure, at an atomic-level, in hopes that this may aid in future engineering of viable fuels. I studied the effective computational modeling of bond disassociations in the FAME methyl linoleate. Bond dissociation in a 44-reaction database with known …

Electronic Structure Evaluation Of Competing Pathways In The Gold(Iii)-Catalyzed Ohloff-Rautenstrauch Cyclosimerization Converting Propargylic Acetates To Carene-Like Natural Products, Jeremy M. Hines
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Propargylic acetates can lead to complex transformations upon exposure to a gold catalyst. Gold catalyzed transformations also allow for simple synthesis of a number of natural products. Gold (III)-cycloisomerization of a 5-acetoxy-1,6-enyne is reported to proceed through two pathways that differ in the order of major events: cyclization followed by ester migration (“cyclization first”) or the reverse (“migration first”). Both pathways could theoretically proceed in either order. This rearrangement is called the Ohloff-Rautenstrauch rearrangement and has high regio- and stereocontrol affording a bicylo[4.1.0]heptane carbon substructure. This rearrangement allows for the synthesis of the carene class of natural products. Computational modeling …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
While transition metal catalyzed cross coupling reactions have become one of the most useful strategies in constructing carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond formations, major disadvantages such as high reaction temperature, expansive metal catalysts input and limited reaction substrates scope have significantly downshifted the applications of those two electron involved transformations. Comparably, the studies on the redox coupling reactions are less investigated. Derived from single electron transfer process, the redox coupling reactions can be used to construct otherwise challenging chemical bonds efficiently, such as Csp3-Csp3 bond. Recently, visible light mediated photoredox catalysis has merged as a highly prominent tool in the development …

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Nitrofurans undergo intramolecular Diels-Alder reactions with tethered electron-poor dienophiles more rapidly and in higher yield than non-nitrated furans. Computational studies indicate that increased stabilization of a partial positive charge on the nitro-substituted carbon in both transition state and product is the driving force for these reactions. Frontier molecular orbital energy differences indicate a switch from normal to inverse electron demand upon nitration. There does not appear to be a contribution from any differences in aromatic stabilization energy between furans and nitrofurans. Calculations show that the nitrofuran reactions proceed via a highly asynchronous transition state allowing easier bond formation between two …

Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) is classified as an immune system response to an infectious state. If left untreated, SIRS leads to sepsis, septic shock, end-organ dysfunction, and death. As a patient progresses through these stages, associations of acute respiratory distress, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and acute renal failure persist, resulting in millions of deaths annually. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a bacterial endotoxin, is released into the blood stream, triggering SIRS. LPS is found in the outer cell-wall of Gram-negative bacteria and is responsible for initiation of a devastating cytokine storm. One of the regions of LPS, lipid A, is a polyacylated glucosamine …

Once inorganic electron acceptors are depleted, organic matter in anoxic environments decomposes by hydrolysis, fermentation, and methanogenesis, requiring syntrophic interactions between microorganisms to achieve energetic favorability. In this classic anaerobic food chain, methanogenesis represents the terminal electron accepting (TEA) process, ultimately producing equimolar CO2 and CH4 for each molecule of organic matter degraded. However, CO2:CH4 production in Sphagnum-derived, mineral-poor, cellulosic peat often substantially exceeds this 1:1 ratio, even in the absence of measureable inorganic TEAs. Since the oxidation state of C in both cellulose-derived organic matter and acetate is 0, and CO2 has …

The cytochrome P450 (CYP) family 1A enzymes, CYP1A1 and CYP1A2, are two of the most important enzymes implicated in the metabolism of endogenous and exogenous compounds through oxidation. These enzymes are also known to metabolize environmental procarcinogens into carcinogenic species, leading to the advent of several types of cancer. The development of selective inhibitors for these P450 enzymes, mitigating procarcinogenic oxidative effects, has been the focus of many studies in recent years. CYP1A1 is mainly found in extrahepatic tissues while CYP1A2 is the major CYP enzyme in human liver. Many molecules have been found to be metabolized by both of …

The Rh-catalyzed, substrate directed catalytic asymmetric hydroboration of γ,δ-unsaturated amides provides a direct route to enantioenriched acyclic secondary γ-borylated carbonyl derivatives with high regio- and enantioselectivity. The catalytic condition optimization and substrate scope study is discussed, including the effects in catalytical asymmetric hydroboration on pre-installed chiral γ,δ-unsaturated amides. A mechanistic study from kinetic approach by graphical manipulation (reaction progress kinetic analysis for substrate orders and normalized time analysis for catalyst order.) was discussed in this thesis

Cytochrome P450 is a broad class of heme monooxygenase enzymes which catalyze various oxidative transformations. There are two main kinds of mammalian P450s: steroidogenic and drug metabolizing P450s. The first project involves a steroidogenic P450, CYP17A1, occupying a central role in the biosynthesis of steroid hormones. It catalyzes hydroxylation reaction on pregnenolone and progesterone, generating 17OH-pregnenolone and 17OH-progesterone, presumably utilizing a “Compound I” species. However, these hydroxylated products can be further processed in a second oxidative cycle to cleave the C17–C20 bond to form dehydroepiandrosterone or androstenedione, respectively, a crucial step in androgen production. Interestingly, it is well known that …

Low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) are a class of compounds which reversibly form a network that traps solvents to form gels. Gelation by LMWGs is driven solely by non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonding, π - π stacking, and hydrophobic interactions. LMWGs can be designed such that the gel-sol and sol-gel transitions happen as a response to a specific stimulus. These stimulus responsive gels or “smart” gels can be used in a wide variety of applications including tissue regeneration, biosensing, and controlled drug delivery.
Among the different types of compounds that are LMWGs, carbohydrate based systems are especially interesting. Carbohydrates …
