Developments Of Photo-Assisted Fuel Cells, Ling-Ling Zhang, Shao-Jun Dong

Journal of Electrochemistry

The exploitation and utilization of fossil fuels have led to serious energy crisis and environmental pollution. In this case, the development of renewable energy is an alternative to traditional energy consumption. Fuel cells (FCs) can convert chemical energy into electricity via the electrochemical reaction, which is green and environment-friendly. Photo-assisted FCs integrate photo-responsive components into FCs, leading to the dual routes of energy conversion including light energy to electricity and chemical energy to electricity, and thus, improving the energy utilization efficiency. The development of photo-assisted FCs is significant for practical application and promising to solve the coming energy crisis. In …

Metals Additive Manufacturing Powder Aging Characterization, Thomas Russell Lovejoy, Nicholas Karl Muetterties, David Takeo Otsu

Mechanical Engineering

The metallic additive manufacturing process known as selective laser melting requires highly spherical, normally distributed powder with diameters in the range of 10 to 50 microns. Previous observations have shown a degradation in powder quality over time, resulting in unwanted characteristics in the final printed parts. 21-6-9 stainless steel powder was used to fabricate test parts, with leftover powder recycled back into the machine. Powder samples and test specimens were characterized to observe changes across build cycles. Few changes were observed in the physical and mechanical properties of the specimens, however, there were indications of chemical changes across cycles. Potential …

Development And Characterization Of Reagent Pencils For Microfluidic Paper Based Analytical Devices, Cheyenne H. Liu

Master's Theses

Microfluidic paper based analytical devices (microPADs) are a novel platform for point of care (POC) diagnostics. Limitations of reagent shelf life have been overcome with the introduction of reagent pencils as a method for solid-based reagent deposition. While useful, little work has been reported on the characterization and optimization of reagent pencils. Herein, an investigation on reagent pencil composition and efficiency is conducted via colorimetric release profile tests utilizing an erioglaucine disodium salt that yields a quantifiable blue colored product in the presence of water. Within this work, an investigation on the molecular weight dependence, polymer chain end functionality, and …

Enhanced Adhesion Of Superhydrophobic Zno Surface, Liqiu Zheng Dr., Chan Kwaichow B.

Georgia Journal of Science

The superhydrophobicity and the strong solid-liquid adhesion of the dually structured ZnO surface are attributed to the suitable size of microstructure and nanostructure. This phenomenon, so different from the Lotus effect, can be called the Petal effect— the super hydrophobicity and the enhanced solid-liquid adhesion coexist on the same surface. The Cassie impregnating model was proposed to understand the underlying reason.

Quantifying The Use Of Chloroform Vapor Exposure To Improve The Adhesion Of Au Thin Films Onto Pmma, Kathleen T. Krist 2016 James Madison University

Quantifying The Use Of Chloroform Vapor Exposure To Improve The Adhesion Of Au Thin Films Onto Pmma, Kathleen T. Krist

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

The metallization of Au onto plastics is an important processing step in applications such as the aerospace and automotive industries, the field of microelectronics, and the fabrication of microfluidic devices. While its corrosion resistance and excellent electrical and thermal conductivity make Au a useful choice, its inertness results in poor adhesion to polymer surfaces. Previous studies have indicated that exposing commercially available poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) sheets to chloroform vapor following Au deposition significantly improves adhesion. In this study, we utilized electron-beam evaporation and magnetron sputtering to deposit Au thin films onto 1.50 mm thick PMMA and exposed the samples to …

Conversion Of Cafo Manure Into A Slow-Release Fertilizer, Richard Allan Williams III 2016 Bowling Green State University

Conversion Of Cafo Manure Into A Slow-Release Fertilizer, Richard Allan Williams Iii

Honors Projects

Alginate polymer is known to form gel through the process of Ionotropic gelation. By use of extrusion and diffusion setting manure was encapsulated into gel beads. These beads were then tested to determine their potential for further testing as a manure treatment process. From the limited data in this preliminary study, it appears as though there is potential for further testing of alginate beads as a treatment process for manure. The treatment is potentially valuable because of the ease of filtration of the alginate beads, the low cost of transportation of the dehydrated beads, and because the limited data suggests …

Phosphonium/Phosphate Ionic Liquids As Lubricant Additives: The Synthesis And Testing Of Six Novel Ils, Matthew Scott Welmers 2016 Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology

Phosphonium/Phosphate Ionic Liquids As Lubricant Additives: The Synthesis And Testing Of Six Novel Ils, Matthew Scott Welmers

Graduate Theses - Chemistry and Biochemistry

In this study, ionic liquids (ILs) are defined as ionic materials with a melting temperature >100oC. ILs are characterized by their organic moieties which prevent crystallization, forcing the liquid phase. ILs are desirable as lubricant additives because of their ability to be fine-tuned by varying the identity of the cation/anion as well as the various organic functional moieties therein. Several novel phosphonium/phosphate ILs have been successfully synthesized via a simple, straightforward process. In this work a series of symmetric and asymmetric anionic phosphodiesters are developed and coordinated with two asymmetric alkyl phosphonium cations. These ILs are tested in SAE 10W30 …

The Evaluation And Implementation Of Magnetic Fields For Large Strain Uniaxial And Biaxial Cyclic Testing Of Magnetorheological Elastomers., Dave Gorman, Niall Murphy, Ray Ekins, Stephen Jerrams

Articles

Magnetorheological Elastomers (MREs) are “smart” materials whose physical properties are altered by the application of magnetic fields. In previous studies the properties of MREs have been evaluated under a variety of conditions, however little attention has been paid to the recording and reporting of the magnetic fields used in these tests [1]. Currently there is no standard accepted method for specifying the magnetic field applied during MRE testing. This study presents a detailed map of a magnetic field applied during MRE tests as well as providing the first comparative results for uniaxial and biaxial testing under high strain fatigue test …

Curing Of Polymer Thermosets Via Click Reactions, Mark Richard Brei 2016 University of Southern Mississippi

Curing Of Polymer Thermosets Via Click Reactions, Mark Richard Brei

Dissertations

In the first project, an azide functional resin and tetra propargyl aromatic diamines were fabricated for use as a composite matrix. These systems take already established epoxy/amine matrices and functionalize them with click moieties. This allows lower temperatures to be used in the production of a thermoset part. These new systems yield many better mechanical properties than their epoxy/amine derivatives, but their Tgs are low in comparison.

The second project investigates the characterization of a linear system based off of the above azide functional resin and a difunctional alkyne. Through selectively choosing catalyst the linear system can show …

Synthesis And Characterization Of "Click Inspired" Thiol-Ene-Fullerene Nanocomposites, Amber Danielle Windham

Dissertations

This work explores the covalent incorporation of C60 and Sc3N@C80 fullerenes into thiol-ene networks by a facile, one-pot photochemical reaction with multifunctional thiol and alkene monomers. Synthesis of disulfide bonds within the tri-functional thiol monomer served to photochemically initiate the reaction when cleaved. This was followed by thermal curing of the pre-polymer for preparation of fullerene-containing thiol-ene films. Films were characterized by standard techniques including infrared spectroscopy, gel percent, and thermogravimetric analysis. The role of C60 and Sc3N@C80 as suitable alkenes for free-radical reaction with multifunctional thiols was investigated by preparing a …

Immobilization Of Heteropolyacids In Silica Gel, Opeyemi Adetola 2016 East Tennessee State University

Immobilization Of Heteropolyacids In Silica Gel, Opeyemi Adetola

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Silica gels containing incorporated heteropolyacids (HPAs) were synthesized in acidic media by co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) with phosphotungstic or phosphomolybdic acids using sol-gel technique. Effect of the synthesis conditions on their structure and morphology was studied. Yields of modified materials were some lower as compared to non-modified silica gels. All materials were mesoporous but contained micropores in their structures. Presence of bands of Keggin’s structures in FT-IR spectra along with absence of XRD patterns of crystalline HPAs confirmed their fine incorporation into silica network. Particle sizes of modified materials were 800-1100 nm excepting for W-containing sample obtained with trimethylstearylammonium chloride. …

Syntheses Of Carbon Paper Supported High-Index Faceted Pt Nanoparticles And Their Performance In Direct Formic Acid Fuel Cells, Long HUANG, Mei ZHAN, Yu-cheng WANG, Yan-fen LIN, Shuo LIU, Ting YUAN, Hui YANG, Shi-gang SUN 2016 State Key Laboratory of Physical Chemistry of Solid Surfaces, Department of Chemistry, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361005, Fujian, China;

Syntheses Of Carbon Paper Supported High-Index Faceted Pt Nanoparticles And Their Performance In Direct Formic Acid Fuel Cells, Long Huang, Mei Zhan, Yu-Cheng Wang, Yan-Fen Lin, Shuo Liu, Ting Yuan, Hui Yang, Shi-Gang Sun

Journal of Electrochemistry

Direct formic acid fuel fuels (DFAFCs) are promising energy source for portable electronic devices. Palladium (Pd) is more active than platinum (Pt) for the formic acid electrooxidation. However, the stability of Pd is much poorer than that of Pt. Unfortunately, the ultra-low natural abundance of the Pt makes it extremely expensive and limits its application as a fuel cell catalyst. Boosting both the activity and stability of Pt nanoparticles to enhance their efficiency is urgent. As previous works illustrated, nanoparticles enclosed with high-index facets usually bare a higher activity toward fuel cell related reactions than those nanoparticles with low-index facet. …
