Computational Elucidation Of The "Coloring Problem" In Rhenium Aluminum Silicon Compounds, Alec George Neeson

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Re1Si1Al1 and its related compounds are potential thermoelectric materials. Previously, it was reported to adopt a MoSi2-type structure with Si and Al atoms statistically sharing the same crystallographic sites. This recent study indicates otherwise – Si and Al are segregated and occupy different sites when mixed with a 1:1:1 stoichiometry. To confirm and rationalize the segregation between Si and Al, this research studied this compound with first-principle calculations. Several model structures have been constructed for Re1Si1Al1 including a number of different super-cell models. Energy analysis confirmed that the …

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

We report a joint anion photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and theoretical study to investigate the effect of O2-binding on the mid-sized even-numbered gold clusters, Aun(n = 20−34), a special size region of bare gold clusters that entail rich forms of structural evolution and transformation. Specifically, within this size range, bare Au20− is a highly-symmetric pyramidal cluster, bare Au21-25− are flat-planar or hollow-tubular clusters, bare Au26− is the smallest core-shell gold cluster, while bare Au34− is a magic-number/fluxional core-shell cluster with the high-symmetry tetrahedral Au4 core. In light of the strong …

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Pyranopterin molybdenum and tungsten enzymes are expressed in numerous organisms from all domains of life. These enzymes catalyze a variety of atom, hydride, and electron transfer reactions. The enzymes are of great importance in the biogeochemical cycles of nitrogen, carbon, and sulfur. In recent years, chemists have investigated applications for some of these enzymes as industrial biocatalysts. The dimethylsulfoxide reductase (DMSOr) enzyme family is the broadest family of pyranopterin Mo enzymes. The first coordination sphere of the Mo or W-containing active site for each member of this family is made up of 4 sulfur donors from the two pyranopterin dithiolenes …

Synthesis Of Cds/Zns Core/Shell Semiconductor Nanoparticles, Austin Skyler Antle 2020 Western Kentucky University

Synthesis Of Cds/Zns Core/Shell Semiconductor Nanoparticles, Austin Skyler Antle

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Core/shell semiconductor nanoparticles are of great interest as photocatalysts due to their large surface area per volume and tunable band gaps. The synthesis of core/shell semiconductor nanoparticles has traditionally involved the use of binding ligands to ensure the particles do not aggregate. These binding ligands lower the surface area of the nanoparticles though, reducing their overall efficiency. Ionic liquids have been found to be capable of acting as both solvents and stabilizing agents for synthesis of catalysts with highly active surfaces. Our experiments focus on the synthesis of CdS/ZnS core/shell nanoparticles with the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium methyl sulfate, [BMIM][MeSO4], acting …

Solvent-Free Synthesis Of Metal Coordination Compounds Using Ball Mills, Jenna Cantway 2020 Western Kentucky University

Solvent-Free Synthesis Of Metal Coordination Compounds Using Ball Mills, Jenna Cantway

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Mechanochemistry utilizes mechanical energy to promote chemical reactions to completion. Samples ground with a ball mill are placed under consistent pressure and temperature, which allows for increased surface area, shorter reaction times and overall better control of reaction conditions compared to the use of a mortar and pestle. Many synthetic techniques to prepare metal coordination compounds use a solvent. The solvent promotes the reactions by providing a route for reagents to interact. While solvents facilitate reactions, there is interest in reducing or eliminating solvents altogether during the synthesis process due to potential instability of a solvent under certain experimental conditions …

Student Works (2020-2029)

A newly designed tetradentate ligand L1 (L1 = 3,6-bis(pyrazol-1-yl)-pyridazine) which offers multinucleation sites on its moiety structure has been prepared. The reaction of L1 with different molar ratio of nickel and cobalt salts lead to the formation of di- and tetranuclear complexes [NiII 2(L1)2(CH3CN)4](PF6)4 (1), [NiII 4(L1)4(μ-OH)4](ClO4)4 (2) and [CoII/III(L1)4(μ-CH3O)2(μ-O)2](PF6)3(NO3) (3), which served as the attempt to design of catalysts based on cheap and earth-abundant metals for carbon dioxide reduction. The presence of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) as the base controls the nuclearity of the complex formation. In the absence of DBU, complex 1 was formed in dinuclear fashion whereas complex 2 …

Globally untreated industrial wastewaters are contaminating soil, surface water, groundwater, and consequently, the environment. Therefore, there is a huge interest in developing efficient and effective removal methods, such as photocatalytic advanced oxidation processes (AOP) under visible light (~47% of solar irradiation). In this work, the effectiveness of Mn-doped ZnO composite decorated onto multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on photodegrading organic pollutants was studied. This composite was simultaneously synthesized by sol gel method. XRD was used to confirm the formation of ZnO/Mn nanocomposite and the crystalline phase changes as ZnO content decreases when other elements were added to form the nanocomposite. The …

Understanding The Interfacial Reactions Initiating On Lithium Metal Surfaces In Next-Generation Battery Technologies, Joshua A. Lochala

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Li-ion batteries have started to reach the theoretical maximum energy. Next-generation batteries represent the future of portable energy sources for vehicle electrification and grid energy storage. Li metal battery is one of the most promising next-generation battery technologies that could potentially double the cell-level energy of conventional Li-ion batteries. However, Li metal has multiple drawbacks that require addressing before realization. These drawbacks include dendrite formation leading to internal short and increasing internal resistance due to the breakdown of electrolyte, leading to rapid cell death. These problems stem from the interfacial reactions occurring during the plating and stripping of Li metal. …

Ensemble And Single Particle Studies Of Cation Exchange In Cuins2/Zns Qds And Their Application In Super-Resolution Imaging, Anh Tue Nguyen

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) have great potential in many applications such as bioimaging, light emitting diodes, solar cells and lasers. However, a great number of studies have been focused on Cd based (II-VI) and Pb (IV-VI) based materials which are not suitable for mass production. Therefore, alternative types of QD containing less toxic materials have been introduced, including CuInS2 QDs. This I-III-VI semiconductor nanocrystals also attract lots of attention due to their large Stock shift, long fluorescence lifetime and high defect tolerance, making them attractive emitters for applications in bioimaging, photovoltaics and light emitting diodes.

In the first project, we …

Seasonal Transport Of Dissolved Inorganic Carbon And Total Alkalinity Across The Louisiana Shelf, Michelle M. Anderson 2020 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Seasonal Transport Of Dissolved Inorganic Carbon And Total Alkalinity Across The Louisiana Shelf, Michelle M. Anderson

LSU Master's Theses

Rivers and wetlands are a major source of terrestrial derived carbon for coastal ocean margins. Unfortunately, Louisiana’s wetlands are threatened by ongoing high rates of erosion, deterioration, and unprecedented rates of river water discharge that changes seasonally, leading to a net loss of terrestrial carbon into the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGOM). There exists a current lack of understanding about the distribution of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TAlk) within the shallowest regions of the Louisiana shelf. Even less is known about how the transport of DIC alters seasonally with changes in river outflow and shelf currents. Quantifying …

Design, Synthesis And Characterization Of New Superconductors, Xin Gui

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Design and synthesis of new materials are a long-standing goal for chemistry, physics and material science, especially those with intriguing properties such as magnetism and superconductivity. With consideration and incorporation of the highlights in some existing design rules, we successfully designed and discovered the superconductivity in BaPt2Bi2, SrSnP and YbxPt5P.

With the help of valence electron counting method, we synthesized a new intermetallic compound, BaIr2Ge2, which was then found to be non-superconducting above 1.8 K. Thus, we considered both valence electron counting and chemical pressure adjustment to reach …

Copper And Ruthenium Pyridyltriazole Complexes And Their Reactivity Toward Carbon Dioxide And Water, Fatemeh Khamespanah

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A variety of pyridyltriazole ligands are readily available via click type cycloaddition of alkynylpyridines and azides. We made functionalized tetradentate m-xylylenebis(pyridyltriazole) (m-xpt) ligands with NH2 and NMe2 electron-donating and NO2 electron-withdrawing substituents on the pyridine moieties. Complexation of these ligands with Cu(II) gives dimeric macrocycles with square pyramidal geometry at Cu centers. Previous work in our lab with the unsubstituted [Cu2(m-xpt)2(NO3)2]2+ complex showed reduction to Cu(I) by using ascorbate as reducing agent. Oxidation of the Cu(I) solution in air results in formation of …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Transition Metal Scorpionate Complexes For Redox Shuttle Applications In Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, Chase Lance

Honors Theses

Given the rising global energy demands, alternative renewable energy sources are currently being investigated. The most appealing renewable energy source is solar energy, and dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) in particular are an attractive technology. DSSCs have traditionally utilized iodide/triiodide as the redox mediator couple, which exhibits high efficiencies and fast regeneration of the oxidized dye with little recombination. Recently, the use of alternative redox couples based on transition metal complexes has been studied as a promising substitute due to the tunable design of these complexes. In this study, tridentate tris(pyrazolyl)borate and tris(pyrazolyl)methane ligands with first-row transition metals were designed and …

Comparison Of The Vibrational Modes Of Thiolated Gold Nanoparticles Undergoing Core-Conversions Via Raman Spectroscopy, William Gregory Cannella Jr.

Honors Theses

In this project, the vibrational characteristics/vibrational modes are explored via Raman Spectroscopy for thiolated-gold nanoparticles. This class of compounds is also known as gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). They remain of great interest in research areas such as catalysis, gold dependent nanoelectronics, drug delivery, and sensing, due to their unique size-dependent optical, chiroptical, and electronic properties. Vibrational spectroscopy of thiolated gold nanoparticles are oftentimes considered nontrivial as the compounds strongly absorb light in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum, are generally considered weak scatterers, and give off large amounts of fluorescence. This combined with their black appearance, susceptibility to localized heating, …

Enhancing Upconversion Nanoparticle Performance Of Nayf4: Yb,Tm With Doping Optimization And Shell Addition And Of Nayf4: Yb,Er With Yb,Nd Shell Addition, Ashleigh M. Chov

Honors Thesis

Upconversion (UC), is a phenomenon that occurs when low-energy excitation (usually near-infrared (NIR)) results in higher-energy emission. Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are particles less than 100 nm in size that are synthesized using rare earth metals such as Yb, Er, Tm, and Y. UCNPs have important applications in a variety of fields, including bio-imaging, security printing, and latent fingerprint development. Traditional methods for latent fingerprint development such as fluorescent powder dusting have several drawbacks including low contrast, high background interference, and autofluorescence. NIR-to-NIR UCNPs are composed of NaYF4: Yb, Tm and emit 800 nm light under 980 nm excitation …
