Studies Of Oxidation Processes Of Adsorbed And Solution Co On Pt(110) Electrode By Cyclic Voltammetry And In Situ Ftirs, Li Tian, Jun-Tao Li, Jin-Yu Ye, Chun-Hua Zhen, Shi-Gang Sun

Journal of Electrochemistry

The oxidation processes of adsorbed CO (COad) and solution phase CO (COsol) on Pt(110) electrode were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and in-situ FTIR spectroscopy. It has revealed that in comparison with COad on Pt(110) in a CO-free solution, the oxidation current peak of COsol in a CO-saturated solution is positively shifted ca. 168 mV,and the peak current density has been increased by 6. 70 times. Linear adsorbed CO (COL) is determined by in-situ FTIR spectroscopy as the main species, which is uniformly distributed on Pt (110) surface. In a CO-free solution, the onset potential of COL is measured by in-situ FTIRS ca. 0. …

X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) at the cadmium L3 and oxygen K edges for CdO thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition method, is interpreted within the real-space multiple scattering formalism, FEFF code. The features in the experimental spectra are well reproduced by calculations for a cluster of about six and ten coordination shells around the absorber for L3 edge of Cd and K edge of O, respectively. The calculated projected electronic density of states is found to be in good agreement with unoccupied electronic states in experimental data and allows to conclude that the orbital character of the …

Multidimensional Liquid Chromatography Separations, Jacob N. Fairchild 2010 University of Tennessee - Knoxville

Multidimensional Liquid Chromatography Separations, Jacob N. Fairchild

Doctoral Dissertations

Many mixtures important to research consist of hundreds or even thousands of individual components of interest. These types of mixtures are far too complex to separate by a single chromatographic dimension in any reasonable amount of time. However, if a multidimensional approach is used, where a complex mixture is separated by an initial dimension, simpler fractions of that separation are collected and each of those fractions are analyzed individually, highly complex mixtures can be resolved in relatively short amounts of time. This dissertation serves as a guide to multidimensional chromatography, in particular, two-dimension liquid chromatography. There are many aspects of …

New Electrochemical And Optical Detection Methods For Biological And Environmental Applications, Royce Nicholas Dansby-Sparks

Doctoral Dissertations

Detection of chromium and vanadium is of interest for biomedical and environmental applications. The two metals have narrow limits between being essential and toxic for humans. Ultra-sensitive techniques have been studied to measure Cr and V at low concentrations found in human blood and environmental samples. Bismuth film and mercury-alloy electrodes have been developed as alternatives to traditional Hg-based electrodes for Cr and V detection. While catalytic adsorptive stripping voltammetry (CAdSV) has been used to detect Cr and V, little is known about the process. The mechanisms of CAdSV have been probed to provide a better understanding of its exceptional …

Data have been assembled from the published literature on the infinite dilution activity coefficients and gas solubilities of solutes dissolved in ionic liquid (IL) solvents. In total data for more than 1790 solute-IL pairs were compiled. The published experimental data were converted to gas-to-IL and water-to-IL partition coefficients, and correlated with the ion-specific equation coefficient version of the Abraham general solvation model. Ion-specific equation coefficients were calculated for 19 different cations and 12 different anions. The calculated ion-specific equation coefficients describe the experimental gas-to-IL and water-to-IL partition coefficient data to within 0.114 and 0.139 log units, respectively. Reported for the …

Spectroelectrochemical Studies Of Metalloporphyrins In Room Temperature Ionic Liquid, Yong Soo Hoo 2010 Marquette University

Spectroelectrochemical Studies Of Metalloporphyrins In Room Temperature Ionic Liquid, Yong Soo Hoo

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The oxidation/reduction reactions of porphyrins and metalloporphyrins play an important role in medicinal, industrial and biochemical reactions. Metalloporphyrins are particularly useful as potential catalysts for a variety of processes including catalytic oxidations. The unique properties of metalloporphyrins make them good candidates as electrocatalysts for fuel cells. Metalloporphyrins also play some important roles in biological functions.

By incorporating spectroscopic experiments such as UV-visible or infra-red spectroscopy along with electrochemical experiments such as cyclic voltammetry, one is able to determine the structural changes of the molecule when oxidation or reduction reaction is carried out.

Perfluoroalkyl Phosphonic And Phosphinic Acid Electrolytes For Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, Mahesha Herath 2010 Clemson University

Perfluoroalkyl Phosphonic And Phosphinic Acid Electrolytes For Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, Mahesha Herath

All Dissertations

Perfluorinated sulfonic acid polymers have been considered as the state-of-art membrane materials for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. A major technical issue with these polymers is that they do not function well at temperatures above 80 °C and at low humidities. Therefore, research has been focused on developing PEM materials that can operate independent of hydration requirements. The operation of fuel cells at high temperature (e.g. 120 oC) increases fuel cell system efficiency due to faster electrode kinetics and better CO tolerance. This dissertation will describe a study of proton-transport rates and mechanisms under anhydrous and aqueous conditions using a …

Complementary Spectroscopic Assays For Investigating Protein−Ligand Binding Activity: A Project For The Advanced Chemistry Laboratory, David Mascotti, Mark Waner

David P. Mascotti

A protein−ligand binding, guided-inquiry laboratory project with potential application across the advanced undergraduate curriculum is described. At the heart of the project are fluorescence and spectrophotometric assays utilizing biotin-4-fluorescein and streptavidin. The use of the same stock solutions for an assay that may be examined by two distinct spectroscopic techniques offers an opportunity to discuss not only protein−ligand binding but also to compare instrumental techniques and to discuss the underlying physical principles that are the origins of the assays. In addition to critically evaluating analytical techniques, students are pushed to develop quantitative pipetting, estimation, and experimental-design skills to collect and …

Blocking Method In Enzyme-Amplified Amperometric Dna Biosensor, Miao He, Wei Chen, Xiong-Wei Xu, Ai-Lin Liu, Xin-Hua Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

Non-specific absorption of enzyme and nucleotide is a main source leading to the background staining in enzyme-amplified amperometric detection of DNA. To eliminate the background staining in this system, the blocking procedure by mercapto-hexanol ( MCH) and bovine serum albumin ( BSA) was studied systematically. The results show that the anti-fouling effect of BSA is better than that of MCH. A simple and efficient blocking strategy employing BSA as the sole blocking reagent was established and applied in the detection of PMLRARα fusion gene in acute promyelocytic leukemia. It can effectively eliminate the background staining, shorten the pre-processing time, and achieve strong …

The application of electrochemically activated glassy carbon ( GC) in the in-situ preparing of bismuth film electrodes ( BiFEs) to analyze Pb2 + and Cd2 + was investigated. The glassy carbon electrodes were electrochemically activated by either potentiostic or cyclic polarization in 1 mol·L-1 NaOH solution. Experimental results show that employment of HCl solution as the analytical solution not only can reproducibly renew the electrochemically activated GC electrode surface with an electrochemical clear procedure, but also can greatly enhance the sensitivity of BiFes method for analysis of Pb2 + and Cd2 + . The test range thus was extended to the …

Development Of Nanomechanical Sensors For Environmental Contaminate Screening Using Protein Functionalized Microcantilevers, Kasey L. Hill 2010 University of Tennessee - Knoxville

Development Of Nanomechanical Sensors For Environmental Contaminate Screening Using Protein Functionalized Microcantilevers, Kasey L. Hill

Doctoral Dissertations

The development of real time, label-free biosensors based on ligand-induced nanomechanical responses of microcantilevers (MCs) allows for sensitive and selective detection. High sensitivity is afforded by the MCs small dimensions. Immobilizing biomolecular recognition phases imparts selectivity from bioaffinity interactions. Biological sensors on a MC platform utilize various proteins, such as antibodies and nuclear receptors, which can be used to detect and screen for potential environmental contaminants.

The interaction between contaminants and immobilized receptors induces an apparent surface stress that leads to static bending of the MC, which is monitored by an optical beam bending technique. Biofunctionalized MCs can provide high …

Radial Heterogeneity And Surface Properties Of Columns Used In High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Jude A. Abia 2010 University of Tennessee - Knoxville

Radial Heterogeneity And Surface Properties Of Columns Used In High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Jude A. Abia

Doctoral Dissertations

The radial heterogeneity of some columns used in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was investigated using an on-column microelectrochemical amperometric detector. Such a detector allowed the recording of the elution profiles at different spatial positions throughout the column exit cross-section. From this, we obtain information about the radial distribution of the mobile phase velocity, column efficiency, and analyte concentration. In all cases, the results obtained show that the spatial distribution of the mobile phase velocity does not follow a piston-flow behavior but exhibits radial heterogeneity with differences not exceeding 5% between the center and wall regions of any column. The …

Newly-Developed Nanostructured Microcantilever Arrays For Gas-Phase And Liquid-Phase Sensing, Zhou Long 2010 UT, Knoxville

Newly-Developed Nanostructured Microcantilever Arrays For Gas-Phase And Liquid-Phase Sensing, Zhou Long

Doctoral Dissertations

The microcantilever (MC) has become a common transducer for chemical and biological sensing in gas phase and liquid phase during recent years. MC sensors provide superior mass sensitivity by converting weak chemical and biological stimuli into high mechanical response. Moreover, other advantages such as small size, low cost and array format have made MCs more attractive than other comparable sensors.

Selectivity in MC sensors can be enhanced by creating a differentially functionalized MC array (MCA) with responsive phases (RPs). A well-designed array should incorporate RPs exhibiting a variety of possible interactions with the analytes, and a specific analyte should induce …

Preparation And Characterization Of Extraction Chromatography Resins Using N-Donor Extractants For Trivalent Actinide And Lanthanide Separations, Christopher L. Klug 2010 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Preparation And Characterization Of Extraction Chromatography Resins Using N-Donor Extractants For Trivalent Actinide And Lanthanide Separations, Christopher L. Klug

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Actinide and lanthanide elements exist in the geosphere and biosphere due to both natural abundances and anthropogenic activities. The investigation of the presence and transport of actinides through the environment is of great scientific interest. In order to prepare environmental samples for precise measurements, the individual actinides must be separated from the chemically similar lanthanides, and from neighboring actinides. Existing extraction chromatography resins are either poorly suited for this separation, have bleeding problems, are not reusable, or fail the CHON principle. In an effort to resolve these issues, malonamides and N-donor extractants from the BTP and BTBP classes of solvent …

Pulsed-Laser Excited Photothermal Study Of Glasses And Nanoliter Cylindrical Sample Cell Based On Thermal Lens Spectroscopy, Prakash Raj Joshi 2010 Utah State University

Pulsed-Laser Excited Photothermal Study Of Glasses And Nanoliter Cylindrical Sample Cell Based On Thermal Lens Spectroscopy, Prakash Raj Joshi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The research in this dissertation presents Pulsed-Laser Excited photothermal studies of optical glasses and cylindrical sample cell.

First, a study of a photothermal lens experiment and the finite element analysis modeling for commercial colored glass filters is done. The ideal situation of a semiinfinite cylinder approximate model used to describe the photothermal lens experiment requires the boundary condition that there is no transfer of heat from the glass to surrounding when the glass is excited with a laser. The finite element analysis modeling for photothermal signal with coupling heat with surrounding shows the thermal heat transfer between the glass surface …
