Case Study Of Pulmonary Embolism With Unusual Chief Complaint, Kajel Patel
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a serious diagnosis that needs to be made in the Emergency department (ED). There are different categories of PE ranging from massive to non-massive/sub-segmental. Regardless of the categorization, the patient will need to be placed on anticoagulation. It is important to catch this diagnosis in the ED so further complications do no arise. Here is a case from the ED with a patient coming in with the chief complaint of acute right lower quadrant abdominal pain and was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism.

Biopsy of the lip is a procedure most used by dermatologists in order to obtain histopathological evaluation of a lesion. It has remained the definitive method of diagnosis for many pathologies, including malignancy. However, although the incidence of lip malignancy has been relatively unchanged since 2012, the number of lip biopsies performed has not followed the same trend, but rather steeply declined since. In this study, the national trends in lip biopsies are evaluated. The Medicare Provider Utilization and Payment (MPUP) database was used to evaluate these practice trends in Medicare providers.

Flank pain, abdominal pain and hematuria are common complaints in emergency medicine. We describe the case of a 72-year-old female who presented to the emergency department for worsening left lower quadrant abdominal pain and left flank pain associated with new-onset hematuria. The patient reports the pain started immediately after she accidentally tripped on a rock while trying to avoid a mailman in an attempt to socially distance due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in a forceful twist of her body and catching herself with her hands without any direct impact to her body. The patient reports the pain gradually …

Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (OMT) is a set of osteopathic techniques that involves manipulation of the musculoskeletal system using the hands. It offers a supplement to standard modes of diagnosis and treatment, and is a key component of the osteopathic holistic approach to medicine.
Despite growing numbers of osteopathic physicians in the United States, OMT continues to be an underutilized asset in a plethora of medical conditions. With the merger of osteopathic and allopathic residency programs, restructuring of standardized curricula to a pass/fail format, and further changes uniting the two tracks of physician education, OMT remains one of the few facets …

Objective: Donor organ assessment is challenging, particularly when physicians and surgeons have to make decisions remotely. To improve communication and preparation for the transplant process, we proposed that a versatile, secure, and transportable video presence would enable a detailed assessment of donor organs.
Methods: A virtual reality camera with a 360-degree visualization range was used with a smartphone receiver to enable integral assessment of the donor's heart in the operating room, with visualization of the organs in real time. Prospective, observational data was collected in two cases in this proof-of-concept study. An assessment physician evaluated the donor heart remotely, and …

Successful percutaneous mechanical circulatory support (MCS) has been used for acute stabilization of cardiogenic shock (CS). Improved survival outcomes have been observed in patients with CS from an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) who undergo implantation of left ventricular (LV) to ascending aorta rotodynamic pumps, such as the Impella® device (Abiomed). However, thrombotic events are a known complication of such devices in poor flow states such as CS. There is limited evidence regarding the management of patients who develop an LV thrombus after Impella insertion. Currently, the Sentinel cerebral protection system (SCPS, Boston Scientific) is the only FDA-approved device for cerebral …

The Impact Of Prolonged Estrogen Deficiency On Cardiac Hypertrophy Following Chronic Sympathetic Stimulation, Isabelle Krueger
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death for both men and women in developed countries. Compared to age-matched males, premenopausal women experience lower rates of CVD but this increases after menopause. A central feature in CVD is changes in sympathetic regulation leading to pathological changes such as cardiac hypertrophy characterized by changes in cardiomyocyte size due to overcompensation of the muscle following injury. The goal of this research is to study the effect of prolonged estrogen loss on cardiac hypertrophy following chronic sympathetic stimulation. Female mice were ovariectomized at 10 weeks of age and treated with Isoproterenol to …

The Effects Of Timing And Long-Term Estrogen Deficiency On Cardiac Fibrosis Following Chronic Sympathetic Stimulation, Samuel Wisecarver
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Evidence in animal studies show that estrogen in women is cardioprotective, but discrepancies remain between clinical and animal studies regarding progression of cardiovascular disease after menopause. Cardiac fibrosis, the build-up of type I and III collagen fibers, is a staple of cardiac remodeling. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of long-term estrogen loss in the heart; this study includes two time points (1-month and 5-month) post-ovariectomy. Mice were randomly selected for 4 treatment groups: SHAM, Ovariectomy (OVX), Isoproterenol (ISO) (a β-adrenergic agonist used to mimic chronic sympathetic stimulation) and OVX+ISO. Mice were infused with either Saline …

Role Of Kvβ2 Subunits In Regulation Of Resistance Arterial Tone., Sean M Raph
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels control vascular resistance and facilitate the augmentation of myocardial blood flow in response to increases in cardiac workload (i.e., metabolic hyperemia). Native sarcolemmal Kv1 channels in arterial myocytes associate with a heteromeric auxiliary complex consisting of intracellular Kvβ1 and Kvβ2 proteins. The Kvβ proteins differentially regulate the function of heterologously expressed Kv channels, as well as native Kv1 channels in excitable cells of the cardiovascular and nervous systems. The physiological importance of vascular Kvβ proteins in mediating vasodilation remains unknown. In this study, I tested the hypothesis that Kvβ proteins functionally regulate vascular tone in response …

According to the CDC, atrial fibrillation is responsible for more than 454,000 hospitalizations and approximately 158,000 deaths per year. A common treatment for atrial fibrillation is catheter ablation, a process in which a long flexible tube is guided through the femoral artery and to the source of arrhythmia in the heart, where it measures the electrical potential at various locations and converts problematic heart tissue to scar tissue via ablation. This paper details the design and control of a low-cost ($400) peristaltic pump system using repetitive control to replicate blood pressure in the left atrium in a conductive silicone model …

Honors Scholar Theses
NOTCH2 is a transmembrane receptor that is part of the Notch receptor family, known for controlling cell differentiation and function. Notch receptors play a crucial role in skeletal development and bone homeostasis. Hajdu Cheney Syndrome (HCS) is a rare monogenic disorder affecting the skeleton caused by a gain-of-function mutation in NOTCH2. Antisense oligonucleotides (ASO) are sequence-specific single-stranded nucleic acids that bind to target mRNA and initiate mRNA degradation. While previous work has explored the role of Notch2 ASOs in osteoblasts and osteoclasts, this paper explores the role of Notch2 and Notch2 ASOs in cells of cartilage tissue. The effect of …

While transfusion of blood and blood products is instinctively linked to the provision of emergent care, blood and blood products are also routinely used for the treatment of subacute and chronic conditions. Despite the efforts of the World Health Organization and others, developing countries are faced with a three-part problem when it comes to access to and delivery of transfusions: insufficient supply, excessive demand, and inadequate quality of available supply. Developing countries rely heavily on replacement and remunerated donors rather than voluntary nonremunerated donors due to concerns regarding donation- and transfusion-transmitted infection as well as local and cultural beliefs. While …
