Indications exist that paramagnetic calcium phosphates may be able to promote regeneration of bone faster than their regular, diamagnetic counterparts. In this study, analyzed was the influence of paramagnetic cobalt-substituted hydroxyapatite nanoparticles on osteoporotic alveolar bone regeneration in rats. Simultaneously, biocompatibility of the material was tested in vitro, on osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 and epithelial Caco-2 cells in culture. The material was shown to be biocompatible and nontoxic when added to epithelial monolayers in vitro, while it caused a substantial decrease in the cell viability as well as deformation of the cytoskeleton and cell morphology when incubated with the osteoblastic …

Chronic inflammatory disorders have been associated with accelerated atherosclerosis and increased cardiovascular (CV) risk. Recent evidence suggests that erosive hand osteoarthritis (EOA) has considerable inflammation; therefore, we examined the presence of subclinical atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction in EOA. Twenty-four patients with EOA and 24 age- and sex-matched healthy individuals without clinical OA were included in the study. No subject had a history of CV disease. Intima-media thickness (IMT) and atheromatous plaques in the common carotid and common femoral arteries were measured by Doppler ultrasonography. Ectotherms regulate body temperature (T_b) primarily through behavioral interactions with their environment. These animals also have limited aerobic scopes and must rely on anaerobic metabolism to support intense activity; lactate byproduct and glycogen depletion are two consequences of anaerobic metabolism that must be dealt with during exercise recovery. It has been suggested that, in many ectothermic species, T_b may affect the rate of lactate clearance and glycogen repletion during recovery from intense exercise. Peripheral nerve injuries (PNI) cause alternations in central synapses leading to loss of function. The C-bouton synapses onto a-motoneurons in the ventral horn, and has a role in regulating motor output. Following tibial nerve ligation, the somatic C-bouton coverage is depleted (Alvarez et al., 2011), however, it is unknown what happens following crush type injuries. PNI causes neuroglia activation and proliferation that contribute to synaptic alterations, a response that has not been well-characterized in the ventral horn, where motoneurons are located. Ischemic stroke makes up 87% of all hospital-admitted stroke cases annually; the primary treatment for these cases is intravenous administration of tPA within a 3.5 hour window from stroke onset. A long-term delayed ischemic stroke treatment proposed by this study was a combination of the pharmaceuticals Fluoxetine (SSRI), Simvastatin (statin), and ascorbic acid (Vitamin C). 51 adult rat subjects (10-12 months of age; 44 Sprague Dawley, 7 Long Evans) were given a combination of the drugs for 31 days. Drugs were given through voluntary oral administration via sugar cookie-dough balls to reduce inhibition of neurogenesis through stress-related glucocorticoid production. Drug …

Intrinsic optical signals (IOS) were used to evaluate volume regulation mechanisms during Schaffer collateral stimulation-induced volume changes in hippocampal slices. The effects of stimulation frequency, synaptic function, ionotropic glutamate receptor (iGluR) activation, glutamate uptake, and volume regulatory anion channels (VRAC) were examined with IOS. Data were analyzed using ANOVA with Dunnett's post hoc test (p<0.05 indicated significance). IOS changes were stimulation frequency dependent between 1 Hz and 10 Hz with full recovery of IOS within 5 min. Synaptic blockage reduced the rate of swelling by 81% compared to the control and the IOS did not fully recover. Recovery rate was reduced with iGluR inhibition. Inhibition of glutamate uptake reduced the rate of swelling by 70% compared to vehicle controls. During stimulation, action potentials, iGluR activation, and glutamate uptake contribute to swelling. Regulatory volume mechanisms during stimulation were glutamate-mediated via iGluRs and VRAC independent.

Although the adenoma detection rate is used as a measure of colonoscopy quality, there are limited data on the quality of endoscopic resection of detected adenomas. We determined the rate of incompletely resected neoplastic polyps in clinical practice.We performed a prospective study on 1427 patients who underwent colonoscopy at 2 medical centers and had at least 1 nonpedunculated polyp (5-20 mm). After polyp removal was considered complete macroscopically, biopsies were obtained from the resection margin. The main outcome was the percentage of incompletely resected neoplastic polyps (incomplete resection rate [IRR]) determined by the presence of neoplastic tissue in post-polypectomy biopsies. …

Posture becomes integrated with other goal-directed behaviors early in infancy and continues to develop into the second decade of life. However, the developmental time course over which posture is stabilized relative to the base of support during a dynamic manual precision task has not been examined. Postural-manual integration was assessed in 7-year-olds, 10-year-olds, and adults using a postural-manual task in which task precision (target fitting size) and postural difficulty (reaching distance to a target) were manipulated. Background: Fast breathing pneumonia is characterized by tachypnoea in the absence of danger signs and is mostly viral in etiology. Current guidelines recommend antibiotic therapy for all children with fast breathing pneumonia in resource limited settings, presuming that most pneumonia is bacterial. High quality clinical trial evidence to challenge or support the continued use of antibiotics, as recommended by the World Health Organization is lacking.

A disintegrin-like metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs-16 (Adamts16) is an important candidate gene for hypertension. The goal of the present study was to further assess the candidacy of Adamts16 by targeted disruption of this gene in a rat genetic model of hypertension. A rat model was generated by manipulating the genome of the Dahl Salt-sensitive (S) rat using zinc-finger nucleases, wherein the mutant rat had a 17 bp deletion in the first exon of Adamts16, introducing a stop codon in the transcript. Rationale: Skeletal muscle blood flow is coupled with the oxygenation state of hemoglobin in young adults, whereby the erythrocyte functions as an oxygen sensor and releases ATP during deoxygenation to evoke vasodilation. Whether this function is impaired in humans of advanced age is unknown.

Objective: To test the hypothesis that older adults demonstrate impaired muscle blood flow and lower intravascular ATP during conditions of erythrocyte deoxygenation.

Although Group A beta hemolytic streptococcus (GABHS) can cause bacterial pharyngitis, the most common etiology is viral; despite this viral etiology, antibiotics are commonly prescribed for this infection in industrialized countries. We investigated the prevalence of GABHS in adult pharyngitis patients from lower socioeconomic settings in Karachi, Pakistan, how often antibiotics are prescribed for pharyngitis and if appropriate agents were used in a developing world setting. Finally, we wanted to see the usefulness of modified McIsaac scores in predicting positive cultures.

Ambush predation is characterized by an animal scanning the environment from a concealed position and then rapidly executing a surprise attack. Mantis shrimp (Stomatopoda) consist of both ambush predators (‘spearers’) and foragers (‘smashers’). Spearers hide in sandy burrows and capture evasive prey, whereas smashers search for prey away from their burrows and typically hammer hard-shelled, sedentary prey. Here, we examined the kinematics, morphology and field behavior of spearing mantis shrimp and compared them with previously studied smashers. Fluctuations during isometric force production tasks occur due to the inability of musculature to generate purely constant submaximal forces and are considered to be an estimation of neuromuscular noise. The human sensori-motor system regulates complex interactions between multiple afferent and efferent systems, which results in variability during functional task performance. Since muscles are the only active component of the motor system, it therefore seems reasonable that neuromuscular noise plays a key role in governing variability during both standing and walking.
