The Effects Of Gdf8 And Activin A On Muscle Atrophy, Amy Sato '10 2010 DePauw University

The Effects Of Gdf8 And Activin A On Muscle Atrophy, Amy Sato '10

Honor Scholar Theses

Muscle atrophy and weakening are major health care concerns. For instance sarcopenia, which is a condition of extreme muscle loss and weakening due to aging, was estimated to have cost over 18.5 billion for the year 2000 in the US (Dirks & Leeuwenburgh, 2005). Abilities that depend upon muscle quality like strength, functional mobility, and balance are all key components for how people evaluate their self-rated health (SRH) and quality of life (QoL) (Ozcan et al., 2005; Sirola et al., 2010). Interestingly, SRH and QoL also serve as strong predictors for institutionalization, disability, and mortality for elderly populations (Marzetti & …

Human Physiology Community Education, Sasha Volgamore, Kristen Mitchell 2010 Boise State University

Human Physiology Community Education, Sasha Volgamore, Kristen Mitchell

Service-Learning Program

The purpose of our project was to educate community members of all age groups to provide them with a basic knowledge of the fundamental workings of the human body, with specific emphasis on skeletal muscle physiology and cardiovascular physiology. It is our hope that members of our target audiences will use this information for future self-directed inquiries into human physiology with regard to their own bodies. Regardless of their age, everyone can decide to eat healthier and live a more active lifestyle. With the knowledge we provided the community, we hope they will appreciate that a healthy lifestyle is paramount …

The Correlation Between Visual Observations And Inclinometric Measurements For Special Tests Related To Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, Erin Quada 2010 Old Dominion University

The Correlation Between Visual Observations And Inclinometric Measurements For Special Tests Related To Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, Erin Quada

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is generally described as an insidious onset with pain increasing during running, jumping, ascending and descending stairs as well as sitting with the knees flexed for an extended period of time. Clinicians often use special tests in injury evaluations and range of motion assessments, usually making a visual observation of that status of the patient. The purpose of this study was to examine how interval measurements utilized in flexibility and range of motion assessments correlate with visual observations of special tests (active knee extension test, Thomas test, Ober's test, rectus femoris flexibility, and Craig's test). The …

The Effects Of Two Different Fatigue Protocols On Lower Extremity Kinematics And Kinetics During An Unanticipated Running Stop-Jump, David L. Quammen 2010 Old Dominion University

The Effects Of Two Different Fatigue Protocols On Lower Extremity Kinematics And Kinetics During An Unanticipated Running Stop-Jump, David L. Quammen

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

Altered neuromuscular control strategies and biomechanical movement risk factors are most likely to contribute to the increased incidence of non-contact ACL injury for female athletes. Neuromuscular control strategies and movement patterns are further altered when the effects of fatigue are present. The purpose of this study was to determine neuromechanical differences between two fatigue protocols [Slow Linear Oxidative Fatigue Protocol (SLO-FP) and Functional Agility Short-Term Fatigue Protocol (FASTFP)] when performing a running stop-jump task (RS). A sample of convenience of fifteen Division I female soccer players (age= 19.2 ± 0.8 years; height= 1.67 ± 0.05 m; mass= 61.7 ± 8.1 …

The Effects Of Two Types Of Fatigue On An Unanticipated Side-Step Cutting Task As Measured By Kinematic And Kinetic Variables, Shawn E. Lucci 2010 Old Dominion University

The Effects Of Two Types Of Fatigue On An Unanticipated Side-Step Cutting Task As Measured By Kinematic And Kinetic Variables, Shawn E. Lucci

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

Fatigue has been shown to alter the neuromechanics of lower extremity. To date, no study has examined the effects of two types of fatigue on kinetics and kinematics. To determine neuromechanical differences between two fatigue protocols [Slow Linear Oxidative Fatigue Protocol (SLO-FP) and Functional Agility Short-Term Fatigue Protocol (FAST-FP)] when performing an unanticipated sidestep cutting task. Fifteen female collegiate soccer players (age=19.2±0.8 years; height=l.67±0.05m; mass=61.7±8.lkg) participated in this study. Participants were free of lower extremity injury at time of participation, and performed five successful trials of a sidestep cutting (SS) task pre and post fatigue protocols. For the SLO-FP, a …

The Effects Of Cocaine And Ecstasy On Cardiac Myocytes And The Intact Myocardium, David A. Tiangco 2010 Old Dominion University

The Effects Of Cocaine And Ecstasy On Cardiac Myocytes And The Intact Myocardium, David A. Tiangco

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Cocaine and ecstasy are widely used illicit drugs. Both drugs have undergone intense scrutiny as information regarding their side-effects has become available. One important yet incomplete area of investigation pertains to their effects on the heart. The purpose of the current studies was to test the hypothesis that exposure to cocaine or ecstasy will adversely affect cellular homeostasis and normal heart function. Cultured cardiac myocytes (H9c2) and New Zealand White rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) were used to measure the responses to various concentrations of cocaine or ecstasy at both the cellular and intact organ system levels. We observed that cocaine and …

A Rapid, Flow Cytometry-Based Assay For The Determination Of Natural Killer Cell Activity In Isolated Periphery Blood Mononuclear Cells, Emily C.P. LaVoy, Brian K. McFarlin 2010 University of Houston - Main

A Rapid, Flow Cytometry-Based Assay For The Determination Of Natural Killer Cell Activity In Isolated Periphery Blood Mononuclear Cells, Emily C.P. Lavoy, Brian K. Mcfarlin

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Natural killer cell activity (NKCA) is an important assessment of innate immunity in humans. Natural killer (NK) cells are known to be affected by exercise; therefore it is of interest to have an efficient method for measuring NKCA in pre- and post-exercise blood samples. Assays for NKCA include incubating human NK cells (effector cells) with stained target cells. The target cells are typically from the human leukemia cell line K562. The number of K562 target cells killed can be determined using a dead cell dye. Control target cells incubated alone provide a measure of spontaneous cell death. PURPOSE: The purpose …
