The Reveal: A Technical Study And Conservation Treatment Of An Overpaint Portrait, Camille Ferrer
Art Conservation Master's Projects
A severely damaged 19th-century oil painting depicting a portrait of a woman was treated at Patricia H. and E. Garman Art Conservation Department. A typed letter provided by the owner mentioned that it has been previously restored yet returned with unsatisfactory results. After further examination, the painting appeared to have been previously treated multiple times by different people. There was overpaint distinctly present on the face and later discovered to be present overall. The full state of condition of the painting was initially unknown due to the sum of the surface being overpainted. However, there were evidence of paint loss …

Excited State Processes In Radical Elaborated Platinum Donor-Acceptor Complexes, Sangita Paudel
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Organo-transition metal complexes are being widely studied to understand their photophysical properties for their wide range of applications as efficient emitters in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), light emitting electrochemical cells (LEECs), etc. Cyclometalated organo-transition metal complexes such as cyclometalated square planar platinum(II) complexes are becoming suitable candidates for such applications because of their highly efficient luminescence. Understanding the excited properties of such complexes is useful in designing highly efficient and color tunable phosphors with desired excited state lifetimes. We aim to explore the influence of radical substituents on electronic structure, luminescence quantum efficiencies, and excited state lifetimes by synthesizing …
Purification And Isolation Of Α-Chloro-Β-Lactone Precursor Molecules, 2024 Bridgewater College
Purification And Isolation Of Α-Chloro-Β-Lactone Precursor Molecules, Matthew Ellis
Honors Projects
This research investigates the synthesis of α-chloro-β-lactone molecules, focusing on the production, isolation, and purification of two precursor compounds from chloroacetic acid and substituted benzaldehydes. While multiple methods were explored, including EDC, DIC, and DCC catalysis, DCC proved to be most effective in producing higher yields. However, challenges in purification arose due to the formation of byproducts, particularly with DCC, prompting further investigation for efficient extraction and purification techniques. DCC, however, shows a promising route for α-chloro-β-lactone synthesis, despite purification complexities.

Role Of Electronegativity In Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals (Epfrs) Formation On Zno, Syed Monjur Ahmed, Reuben A. Oumnov, Orhan Kizilkaya, Randall W. Hall, Philip T. Sprunger, Robert L. Cook
Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Scholarship
Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs), a group of emerging pollutants, have significantly longer lifetimes than typical free radicals. EPFRs form by the adsorption of organic precursors on a transition metal oxide (TMO) surface involving electron charge transfer between the organic and TMO. In this paper, dihalogenated benzenes were incorporated to study the role of electronegativity in the electron transfer process to obtain a fundamental knowledge of EPFR formation mechanism on ZnO. Upon chemisorption on ZnO nanoparticles at 250 °C, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) confirms the formation of oxygen adjacent carbon-centered organic free radicals with concentrations between 1016 and 1017 spins/g. …

The formation of a fluorescent biosensor complex consisting of 5 nm diameter gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) was conducted using a low-cost, efficient binding method. The analytical potential for the complex to detect mercuric ions (Hg2+) in an aqueous solution was assessed through the collection of UV-vis and fluorescence spectrometry data for the AuNP-ssDNA complex. The researcher aimed to investigate this potential in case the nanoparticles formed utilizing this method were too small to result in detectable fluorescence. To eliminate this possibility, the complex synthesized from this specific method was qualitatively evaluated to determine if it consistently and …

Analysis Of Botulinum Toxin A And Interacting Proteins In Skeletal Muscle Cells: An Investigation Into The Mechanisms Of Botulinum Toxin A As A Treatment For Chronic Exertional Compartment Syndrome, Lauren R. Kee
ELAIA
Background Chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS) is a condition in which muscle tissue expands against the surrounding fascia during activity and is compressed along with the nerves and blood vessels within the muscle compartment, leading to abnormally high intracompartmental pressure (ICP) and debilitating pain. Treatment typically includes fasciotomy, which results in significant levels of CECS recurrence; however, botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) injection has recently been seen to decrease both ICP and pain through an unknown mechanism with little to no recurrence. Methods In this study, PyRosetta was used to model the probability of docking interaction between BoNT-A light or heavy …

Avena sativa phototropin 1 light-oxygen-voltage 2 domain (AsLOV2) is a model protein of Per-Arnt-Sim (PAS) superfamily, characterized by conformational changes in response to external environmental stimuli. This conformational change begins with the unfolding of the N-terminal A'α helix in the dark state followed by the unfolding of the C-terminal Jα helix. The light state is characterized by the unfolded termini and the subsequent modifications in hydrogen bond patterns. In this photoreceptor, β-sheets are identified as crucial components for mediating allosteric signal transmission between the two termini. Through combined experimental and computational investigations, the Hβ …

Research Symposium
Background: A theranostic strategy combining diagnostic imaging and targeted therapy in a single regimen is proposed for improved management and treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC). Increased specificity in detection by the noninvasive imaging technique positron emission tomography (PET) can be achieved by radiolabeling antibodies (Abs) designed to target tumor-associated antigens with increased expression post-translational modifications present in cancer cells. In this study, an Ab designed to target the transmembrane glycoprotein mucin 13 (MUC13) was radiolabeled with the positron-emitting radionuclide zirconium-89 (89Zr) for PET imaging of a xenograft mouse model of CRC. Specified uptake of this radioimmunoconjugate was observed …

Emissions from volatile chemical products (VCPs) have been identified as contributors to air quality degradation in urban areas. Limonene can be a tracer compound for VCPs containing fragrances in densely populated regions, but limonene is also emitted from conifers that are planted in urban areas. This creates challenges for using limonene to estimate VCP emissions. In this study, the −/+ enantiomeric ratios of limonene from VCP and conifer emission sources were quantified to evaluate if this measurement could be used to aid in source apportionment and emission inventory development. Samples were analyzed using a gas chromatograph equipped with a chiral …

It was recently reported that values of the transition heat capacities, as measured by differential scanning calorimetry, for two globular proteins and a short DNA hairpin in NaCl buffer are essentially equivalent, at equal concentrations (mg/mL). To validate the broad applicability of this phenomenon, additional evidence for this equivalence is presented that reveals it does not depend on DNA sequence, buffer salt, or transition temperature (Tm). Based on the equivalence of transition heat capacities, a calorimetric method was devised to determine protein concentrations in pure and complex solutions. The scheme uses direct comparisons between the thermodynamic stability of a short …
The Α-Crystallin Chaperones Undergo A Quasi-Ordered Co-Aggregation Process In Response To Saturating Client Interaction, Kirsten Lampi, Adam P. Miller, Susan E. O'Neill, Steve L. Reichow
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
Small heat shock proteins (sHSPs) are ATP-independent chaperones vital to cellular proteostasis, preventing protein aggregation events linked to various human diseases including cataract. The α-crystallins, αA-crystallin (αAc) and αB-crystallin (αBc), represent archetypal sHSPs that exhibit complex polydispersed oligomeric assemblies and rapid subunit exchange dynamics. Yet, our understanding of how this plasticity contributes to chaperone function remains poorly understood. This study investigates structural changes in αAc and αBc during client sequestration under varying degree of chaperone saturation. Using biochemical and biophysical analyses combined with single-particle electron microscopy (EM), we examined αAc and αBc in their apo-states and at various stages of …

Automated Workflow For Redox Potentials And Acidity Constants Calculations From Machine Learning Molecular Dynamics, Feng Wang, Jun Cheng
Journal of Electrochemistry
Redox potentials and acidity constants are key properties for evaluating the performance of energy materials. To achieve computational design of new generation of energy materials with higher performances, computing redox potentials and acidity constants with computational chemistry have attracted lots of attention. However, many works are done by using implicit solvation models, which is difficult to be applied to complex solvation environments due to hard parameterization. Recently, ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) has been applied to investigate real electrolytes with complex solvation. Furthermore, AIMD based free energy calculation methods have been established to calculate these physical chemical properties accurately. However, …

Standard electron-transfer rate constant is one of the intrinsic properties for an electrochemical reaction, which is significant in the study of electrode kinetics. It is a key criterion for one to clarify the mechanism and pathway of a specific electrochemical reaction, and to screening and design the electrocatalysts and battery materials. Herein, we will introduce the measuring methods of rate constant for electrode reactions, including polarization curve, rotating disk electrode, ultramicroelectrode, scanning electrochemical microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, current step, potential step and cyclic voltammetry, etc., to provide a guide to investigate electrode kinetics for graduate students and researchers in the …

This study identifies, for the first time, critical calculation errors made by Nathan Lewis and his co-authors, in their study presented on May 1, 1989, at the American Physical Society meeting in Baltimore, Maryland. Lewis et al. analysed calorimetrically measured heat results in nine experiments reported by Martin Fleischmann and his co-authors. According to the Lewis et al. analysis, each of the experiments, where calculated for no recombination, showed anomalous power losses. When we used the same raw data, our corrected calculations indicate that each experiment showed anomalous power gains. As such, these data suggest the possibility of a new, …

Joint Time-Frequency Analysis: Taking Charge Penetration Depth And Current Spatial Distribution In The Single Pore As An Example, Nan Wang, Qiu-An Huang, Wei-Heng Li, Yu-Xuan Bai, Jiu-Jun Zhang
Journal of Electrochemistry
In recent years, joint time-frequency analysis has once again become a research hotspot. Supercapacitors have high power density and long service life, however, in order to balance between power density and energy density, two key factors need to be considered: (i) the specific surface area of the porous matrix; (ii) the electrolyte accessibility to the intra-pore space of porous carbon matrix. Electrochemical impedance spectra are extensively used to investigate charge penetration ratio and charge storage mechanism in the porous electrode for capacitance energy storage. Furthermore, similar results could be obtained by different methods such as stable-state analysis in the frequency …
