Transit Time Internet Access Version (TTIA1) is a prototype messaging program which delivers real-time bus schedule information to users of the Internet. Using the World Wide Web and the well developed hypertext markup language (html), TTIA1 allows a bus user to request and receive schedule deviation information about a specific bus at a specific timepoint. TTIA1 is part of a project whose goal is to evaluate the effect on riders behavior and riders level of satisfaction of actual arrival time information.
Small Business Lending: Barriers And Trends, Zhongcai Zhang, Ziona Austrian
Small Business Lending: Barriers And Trends, Zhongcai Zhang, Ziona Austrian
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
In recent years, small-business lending has been discussed widely among the commercial banking community, a reflection of both the growing relative importance of small businesses to the U.S. economy and the fact that large companies have developed the ability to access capital markets directly for debt and equity financing. Although their market share in small-business lending has been eroded in recent years by competition from depository and non-depository financial institutions, commercial banks remain the most frequently used source of financing for small businesses. Accordingly, this paper will focus on commercial banks. At some point during their operating history, most small …

Neotraditional Design: Resisting The Decentralizing Forces Of New Spatial Technologies, Kenneth Dueker, Martha J. Bianco
Neotraditional Design: Resisting The Decentralizing Forces Of New Spatial Technologies, Kenneth Dueker, Martha J. Bianco
Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports
The New Urbanist, or Neotraditional, movement that has characterized urban planning since the beginning of the 1990s has a vision of how people should live, work, and travel in a manner that, planners believe, will be "best" for society and for the environment. At the core of this vision is the notion that a return to the high densities, architectural form, and lifestyle of the period prior to World War II will result in a better society. A question that is ignored by the neotraditional proposals is the extent to which changing technologies might make calls for higher densities obsolete. …

Thinking About Cities: The Central Tradition In U.S. Urban History, Carl Abbott
Thinking About Cities: The Central Tradition In U.S. Urban History, Carl Abbott
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
Urban history in United States in the last 150 years has been concerned with two central questions. Historians of three generations focused on the process of urbanization and the problem of civic order in the cities. The historians of recent times emphasize on community formation as the determinant of economic growth and its general effect. Earlier scholars discussed the creation of communities and institutions and the correlation between urban and national development. Thus, interaction between city and citizen is a viable theme of urban history.

Bus Stop Based Schedule Database For The Transit Time Internet, Jun Qui
Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports
Advanced Public Transportation Systems (APTS) are a subset of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Bus Dispatch Systems (BDS) are importatnt components of APTS. Based on the Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) technology, the BDS generates exception reports for buses not adhering to their schedule. A Transit Time Internet Access System (TTIA) is under development. It currently reports bus schedule times and bus arrival times for time points (abbreviate as TP) along routes. The objective of a subsequent version of the TTIA is to provide user with schedule time at the bus stop level. This a report on progress to estimate stop level …

Impact Of The Urban Growth Boundary On Metropolitan Housing Markets, Gerard C. Mildner, Kenneth Dueker, Anthony M. Rufolo
Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports
As required by state law, Metro has conducted an "Urban Growth Report" and a "Housing Needs Analysis" to determine whether the currant Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) surrounding the Portland metropolitan area is sufficient to handle the increase in population and number of households expected over the next 20 years. Mr. Don Morissette commissioned Portland State University's Center for Urban Studies to assess whether the techniques used in theses two studies were appropriate and to assess the impact of the UGB on housing markets in the Portland metropolitan area generally. The focus will be be on the impact of the UGB …

The Internationalization Of Washington, D.C., Carl Abbott
The Internationalization Of Washington, D.C., Carl Abbott
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
The globalization of U.S. cities is attracting increasing theoretical and empirical attention. The author analyzes internationally oriented activities in metropolitan Washington, D.C., and demonstrates that the city's international roles are built directly on its historic function as a national city. Focusing on change over time, the author also shows that globalization is a stepwise process: Several key periods of the expansion of international functions were followed by periods of gradual absorption. In comparative context, Washington supports arguments about the separability of international functions and shows the importance of historical development in determining the different ways in which cities interact with …

Saving The Historic Homes Of New Orleans: An Overview Of Plans And Policies Affecting Housing And Historic Preservation, S. Elizabethe Bogart
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to provide a clear and cohesive plan to assist the City of New Orleans in rehabilitating historic homes and neighborhoods. One of the main attractions for visitors to New Orleans is the charm of its architecture. A larger portion of the architecture is in disrepair. Most of the neighborhoods that are suffering from blight are homes in low-income communities. These families have little help in maintaining these historic structures because of the increased costs.
The administration of Mayor Marc Morial has decided that revitalizing the City's neighborhoods is of primary concern. This administration has …

Saving Our Homes: The Lessons Of Community Struggles To Preserve Affordable Housing In Chicago's Uptown, Center For Urban Research And Learning, Philip Nyden, Joanne Adams
Center for Urban Research and Learning: Publications and Other Works
Over the past 25 years we have witnessed declining federal investment in affordable housing at the same time as there has been growth in low-income households. During this same quarter of a century we have seen a shift from a national "War on Poverty" to federal policies that treat poor adults and children as hopeless, undeserving citizens. In this new era of fiscal constraints there is no talk about meeting basic nutritional, housing, health care, and educational needs. A chorus of new conservative leaders claims to be speaking for the suffering middle class. The media increasingly talk of the "haves" …

A Plan For Parks And Recreation In Light Rail Station Communities, Mary Anderson, Heather Coleman, Alan Lehto, Kristina Gifford Mckenzie, Deena Platman, Paul Scarlett
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects
This plan proposes new park classifications for THPRD, adding new types of park and recreation facilities appropriate to station communities and adjusting existing classifications to address the needs of a more urban environment. This plan also presents service criteria and design issues that should be considered in siting park and recreation facilities, and elements that should be incorporated into site design. The classifications, service criteria, and design elements were applied to the 170th/Elmonica station area, resulting in a conceptual park and recreation plan for that community, which is also included. Finally, strategies are presented to implement the recommendations contained in …
