The New Philanthropy In The New West Virginia, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Although philanthropy is a very old concept, many authorities today see a new philanthropy, including dramatic increases in donations and the assets of foundations. Also a new West Virginia may be emerging from the past of the forest agriculture of buckskin-clad mountaineers and coal mining. This presentation examines the convergence of the new philanthropy and this new West Virginia.

The previous section reviewed the results of a survey that asked African American citizens of Nebraska their opinions on several issues and concerns facing Nebraska's AfricanAmerican community. This section uses these results to develop actions and recommendations in several areas: Youth Issues, Government Issues, Jobs and Economic Development, Criminal Justice, and Health. Because some of these areas overlap, actions and recommendations suggested for one area may also apply to another area.

The State of Black Nebraska 2000 is based on a survey sponsored by the Urban League of Nebraska and conducted by the Center for Public Affairs Research at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The State of Black Nebraska Survey was conducted through telephone interviews with 474 adults from African-American households in Douglas, Sarpy, and Lancaster Counties. Together these three counties account for approximately 97 percent of the African-American population in Nebraska. The Public Risk Management Association established its State of the Profession survey to provide member entities with comparative information about the compensation, experience, education, responsibilities and challenges of the public risk management function. The PRIMA State of the Profession survey was administered via mail to all 1,580 PRIMA government members. The survey recipients comprise representatives of state and local governments and special districts. This executive summary is based on the answers of 518 respondents representing 32.8 percent of the members.

Symbolic Politics: Government's War Against The Working Class, Warren Charles Gregory

Symbolism and substance are essential parts of any political system. In our system of government, we typically think of symbolism as serving substantive ends. Using a triangulation of _methods (Participant Observation, Archival Data, and Documentary Evidence), the paper examines two cases (Social Security and criminal justice) and concludes that the mix between substance and symbolism has changed dramatically in recent years with symbolism now assuming the central role.

The current debates over Social Security funding and criminal justice sanctions, for example, are less about the concerns of old-age security or making the public safer as much as they reflect a …

A comparative analysis of southern Nevada municipalities, and their active participation to implement historical preservation is the foundation of research for this paper. The city of Las Vegas and surrounding municipalities have varying preservation programs in place. The distinctions between the municipalities historic preservation programs foster little protection for the historic site itself in most cases. Historic preservationists are actively bringing to the attention of government the importance of preservation, and are seeking more and more action on the part of the government to implement historic preservation mandates and protection.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Region is the fastest growing region in the United States and has been for several years. The same source lists Henderson as the fastest growing large city (over 100,000 population) since 1990.
