The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) defines intercity bus service as “regularly scheduled bus service for the general public that operates with limited stops over fixed routes connecting two or more urban areas not in close proximity, that has the capacity for transporting baggage carried by passengers and that makes meaningful connections with scheduled intercity bus service to more distance points, if such service is available.”

In rural states like Nebraska, intercity bus services are used most often to connect rural areas with larger urbanized areas.

2010 Census efforts to count every person and find the characteristics of every household provide researchers with an abundance of data. One item census data accurately provide are the numbers of households that have one resident, a person living alone. Individuals living alone have become a more common living arrangement over recent decades. Especially for the elderly, living alone can create challenges that policy makers need to evaluate and potentially address.

In 2007 the Center for Public Affairs Research (CPAR) released an analysis of 2006 American Community Survey (ACS) income data from the U.S. Census Bureau. These data were adjusted for the costs of goods as services (COGS) using indices released by the Council for Community and Economic Research. At that time the Omaha metro area ranked 2nd best among the 100 most populous metros for which data were available regarding this “purchasing power”. Hispanic/Latino Changes In Nebraska's Population: 1980-2010, David J. Drozd

Past Publications

The Hispanic/Latino population has risen dramatically in Nebraska. After totaling about 28,000 Nebraska residents in 1980, the Hispanic/Latino population increased by about 9,000 or 32 percent to about 37,000 in 1990. Then the Hispanic/Latino population more than doubled in the 1990s, to more than 94,000 persons, an increase of more than 57,000 or about 155 percent. The 2010 census showed continued growth and more than 167,000 Hispanic/Latino Nebraska residents, an increase of nearly 73,000 or 77 percent since 2000.

This report shows annual birth and death figures for Nebraska and its counties. Demographic patterns and trends, including components of population change, are illustrated. Births to Nebraska residents have outnumbered deaths for decades, a leading factor in Nebraska’s population growth. In Nebraska, this “natural change” tends to dwarf the other primary component of population change, net migration, so details and factors relating to births and fertility rates are important areas to study. As such, this report focuses on showing changes in the number of births and other birth trends since they have such a profound effect on Nebraska’s population and …

Rural and non-metropolitan public-use and general aviation airports play a critical role in the economic development of communities in agricultural states and states with dispersed populations. Not only do they serve as a vital link to markets and resources for both agricultural and non-agricultural businesses operating in the community, small airports provide needed transportation options for area residents. These airports also perform an important function in providing needed health and medical transport services in non-metropolitan locations. Airports can be described as critical “public assets” with needed services to the local community (Penney 2003).

The Omaha Conditions Survey: 1998 is the fifth in a series of studies conducted by the Center for Public Affairs Research (CPAR) at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The purpose of the Omaha Conditions Survey is to produce and disseminate quality information about issues of importance to the community. The 1998 survey focused on measuring detailed characteristics of the local labor force. This information is intended to help members of the community address issues related to labor availability and employment needs.

The 1996 session of the Nebraska Unicameral enacted several bills focusing on the organization and cost of local governments. One bill-LB 1085--provided new, more specific language and procedures governing county consolidation and service cooperation. Coupled with the new language and procedures was a requirement that each county complete by January, 1998 a study of whether property taxes might be reduced through the consolidation of offices, services and/or county governments.

In 1991, the authors conducted a study of 500 older Nebraskans, comparing 300 people in Omaha and its surrounding counties with a sample of 200 who lived in the very rural Sandhills counties. The purpose of that study was to compare health and health care experience and satisfaction between urban and rural-dwelling elders. Random samples of older people were identified and interviewed by trained telephone operators; each interview took about a half hour. People were asked about their experiences with health and illness, the distance to their primary source of medical care and the distance to the hospital they use, …

The Omaha Conditions Survey: 1993 North Omaha Sample found several positives as well as negatives about the North Omaha area. On the bright side, North Omaha residents like the quality of life and the people in their neighborhoods. Over seventy percent of adults, eighteen and older, are in the labor force (either working or looking for work). North Omaha residents generate $81 million in annual spending on selected items.

Random samples were drawn in Douglas County, Nebraska (N = 196, mean age = 73.8 years), in the counties surrounding Douglas County also served by the Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging (N = 104, mean age = 72.4 years), and in eleven of the rural Sandhills counties of Nebraska (N = 200, mean age = 76.6). Participants responded to structured interviews of 169 questions that included self-assessed health status, availability of health care and physician services, costs, attitudes toward health care services, health experiences and beliefs.
