The main purpose of this thesis is to (1) study the impacts of urbanization on environmental resources, and (2) propose land use planning strategies to avoid or at least minimize the impacts from future land use planning and decision making process. Urbanization, one of the major drivers of land use change, has profound impacts on environmental resources. It has been revealed that more than one third of the U.S. water resources have already been impaired or polluted, and many species have become endangered or threatened with some already gone extinct and more on line. Recent planning thought has focused on how to configure the city to reduce dependence on private automobiles. One important strain of this thinking is how to promote a city where daily needs can be satisfied on foot. Using the tools of Central Place Theory and Demand Threshold analysis, this work studies the required population density to bring grocery shopping within pedestrian range of the population. The analysis is based on the grocery market in Dallas County, Texas. The goal of this study is to identify the roles and barriers of community-based organizations in post-disaster changing neighborhoods and to examine how community based organizations support residents in dealing with neighborhood change through the case of New Orleans, Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina. Drawing on a review of existing reports and conducting surveys with community-based organizations, this study first identifies how community-based organizations support existing residents and attempts to gauge the role of these organizations in representing low-income residents in New Orleans, LA after Katrina, 2005. How would you remember September 11, 2001 if you were a young Muslim in the United States during this time, if you become the "enemy"? Local governments continue to face difficulty transitioning from performance measurement systems to performance management systems. The purpose of this research is to determine if the Citistat performance management system influences organizational behavior, organizational efficiency or organizational effectiveness in the local government setting. Citistat is a recent performance management innovation claiming budgetary savings and improved performance, but has yet to be empirically tested across multiple jurisdictions. But in this imperfect world this paper has turned to Oliver Williamson and his understanding of New Institutional Economics to help us make sense. NIE helps explain institutions and organizations and their role in creating and shaping contracts that fit a very diverse institutional, organizational and human landscape. NIE provides a new lens to examine institutions as diverse as politics and as rigid as economics. Yet, one critical institution has yet to be examined through that lens. Supply reduction efforts by drug law enforcement departments are a significant factor in improving the effectiveness of drug control policies. As with other public organizations, the performance of drug law enforcement departments is one of the most important concerns for policy makers. The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act has made a big impact on tribal-state relations since it was enacted in 1988 by the federal government. Tribes have started to make campaign contributions to state and federal politicians to help try to mold lawmakers to vote for Tribal interests. My research looks at Minnesota tribes and their campaign contributions to House members during the 2005 election, and whether these lawmakers voted for tribal issues during their term. For control variables I also gathered a variety of information related to legislative districts. What my analysis has shown is that the tribes in Minnesota donate …

Human related accidents in high-risk industries amount to a significant economic hazard and incur tremendous damages, causing excessive operational costs and loss of life. The aviation industry now observes human-related accidents more frequently than in the past, an upswing attributable to cutting-edge technology usage and the complex systems employed by aviation organizations. Historically, aviation accidents have been attributed to individual unsafe behavior. However, contemporary accident causation models suggest that organizational-level factors influence individual safety performance, as human-related accidents take place in an organizational context. Obedience, Schooling, And Political Participation, Davin Chor, Filipe R. Campante

This paper proposes a framework for understanding the joint evolution of cultural norms and human capital investment, and how these affect patterns of political participation. We first present some empirical evidence that cultural attitudes towards obedience systematically influence an individual's propensity to engage in different political activities: obedience discourages more confrontational modes of political activity (such as public demonstrations), while raising participation in non-confrontational civic acts (such as voting). These cultural attitudes further appear to be determined in part by cultural transmission across generations. Motivated by this evidence, we develop a dynamic model in which human capital and obedience are …

This study will examine the evolution of the field of venture philanthropy since the late 1990s and will provide an updated guide to the types of organizations utilizing venture philanthropy strategies across the United States and internationally. Deliberative democracy grounds its legitimacy largely in the ability of speakers to participate on equal terms. Yet theorists and practitioners have struggled with how to establish deliberative equality in the face of stark differences of power in liberal democracies. Designers of innovative civic forums for deliberation often aim to neutralize inequities among participants through proportional inclusion of disempowered speakers and discourses. In contrast, others argue that democratic equality is best achieved when disempowered groups deliberate in their own enclaves (interest groups, parties, and movements) before entering the broader public sphere. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) compiles tax return data each year. They match returns from one year to the next utilizing social security numbers. The newest data for 2008 was released in October 2009. The 2008 data should be interpreted as tax returns filed in the spring of 2008 (April 2008) for tax year 2007. The comparison is made between where the people filed in the current year versus their address when filing in the previous year (spring of 2007 for the 2006 tax year). The data are limited to tax filers, which tend to under-represent certain groups, such as …
