Reddit As An Analogy For Scholarly Publishing And The Constructed, Contextual Nature Of Authority, Anna M. White
Reddit As An Analogy For Scholarly Publishing And The Constructed, Contextual Nature Of Authority, Anna M. White
Communications in Information Literacy
This paper provides an overview of how the social news site Reddit can be used as an example of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education threshold concept “Authority is Constructed and Contextual.” It posits that the construction and context of authority in the sense of Wilson’s concept of cognitive authority is in the inherent structure of Reddit and that students can benefit from an example that easily links their personal and academic lives—a connection not always made when discussing authority in peer-reviewed publications or databases.

Through The Looking Glass: Viewing First-Year Composition Through The Lens Of Information Literacy, Alexandria Chisholm, Brett Spencer
Communications in Information Literacy
This paper presents a case study of how librarians can situate themselves as pedagogical partners by bringing their unique information literacy perspective and expertise to the programmatic assessment process. This report resulted from the Thun Library and the Penn State Berks Composition Program's collaboration to assess the institution’s first-year composition (FYC) course. From previous programmatic assessments of their students’ work, the faculty had a sense that students struggled with source use in their rhetoric but found it difficult to pinpoint students’ exact source issues. By adapting a rubric theoretically-grounded in the ACRL Framework to deconstruct the concept of source use …

Conceptual And Procedural Knowledge: A Framework For Analyzing Point-Of-Need Information Literacy Instruction, Amy Vanscoy
Communications in Information Literacy
The information literacy instruction (ILI) that occurs during a spontaneous information interaction, such as at the reference desk, is not clearly defined and not extensively researched. It differs, however, from classroom ILI, with its lesson plans, carefully considered learning outcomes, and planned learning activities. This paper uses the framework of conceptual and procedural knowledge, drawn from education research, to analyze point-of-need ILI. Digital reference transcripts were analyzed using this framework, and examples of ILI from the transcripts were categorized to make sense of how conceptual and procedural knowledge manifest in point-of-need ILI. This conceptual/procedural focus acknowledges the unique context of …

Initial Development Of The Perception Of Information Literacy Scale (Pils), Matthew Doyle, Britt Foster, Mariya A. Yukhymenko-Lescroart
Communications in Information Literacy
The ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education has provided academic librarians a guiding document to facilitate the development of information literacy skills in students. Despite widespread adoption of the Framework in academic libraries, a lack of valid and reliable Framework-based scales for assessing students’ knowledge practices and dispositions hinders further understanding of student information literacy. The current article describes the development and testing of the Perception of Information Literacy Scale (PILS). The participants in this study were 443 graduate students. The resulting scale is made up of 36 items that measure seven distinct constructs of information literacy. …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
A special library is established to provide information resources and services which are of direct relevance to the interest and activities of the parent institution. Information services delivery in special libraries assists in providing, storing, retrieving and disseminating information to the clientele of such libraries. However, poor information service delivery appears to be rampant in special libraries especially in Nigeria nowadays. This study, therefore, investigated the influence of information resources availability and staff quality on information service delivery in libraries of French-based institutions in Lagos and Oyo States, Nigeria. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, six (6) …

Socio-Demographic Variables As Predictors Of Accessibility And Utilization Of Maternal Health Information Among Women In Lagos, Nigeria., Ngozi Blessing Ukachi
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The rate of maternal mortality and morbidity in Nigeria had continued to be alarming notwithstanding government’s institution of intervention programmes focused on enlightening women on the need for prenatal care, postnatal care, family planning, and essential obstetric care. The need to find a lasting solution to this problem calls for a study that is not just focused on the medical factors but examines socio-demographic factors that are likely to predict access and utilization of maternal health information. The Objective of this therefore is to determine socio-demographic variables as predictors of accessibility and utilization of maternal health information, including maternal health …

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare genetic connective tissue disorder that results in bone fragility and deformity. Management is multi‐disciplinary. Although pharmacologic intervention with bisphosphonates (BP) is a standard of care for individuals with severe OI, no consensus or reviews were found that focus on the effects of bisphosphonates on function and mobility. PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and PEDro databases were searched for eligible articles for this review. Methodological quality was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration's tool for risk of bias. Twenty‐six studies (801 children) were reviewed and five showed a low risk of bias. Included studies …

Peacebuilding Through Food Recovery, Angela Hackstadt
Peacebuilding Through Food Recovery, Angela Hackstadt
University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
The United States wastes approximately 133 billion pounds of food annually while 15 million American households are food insecure. Current and proposed U.S. legislation attempts to encourage food recovery efforts to address both of these problems by incentivizing donation of surplus foods by businesses to charitable organizations, yet legislation has failed to deliver. Food insecure individuals who use food banks or other safety net programs are often required to provide personal information and are subject to scrutiny in the process of acquiring food. Information can be leveraged in different ways to stigmatize or marginalize those in need. This presentation discusses …
