The Lorekeeper’S Trial: Teaching Ai Literacy Through Active Learning In The Library Classroom, Taylor Greene, Douglas R. Dechow
Library Articles and Research
How can librarians engage students in critical, hands-on learning about artificial intelligence within the limitations of a one-shot session? At Chapman University, librarians have developed an AI literacy session that integrates ethics and hands-on exploration into workshops and course-embedded sessions. This presentation highlights how to weave AI literacy into information literacy instruction, with a focus on a First-Year Foundations program.
Presenters will discuss their efforts to reach students, staff, and faculty through AI literacy initiatives across campus. They will also demonstrate how the Lorekeeper’s Trial—a research quest inspired by RPGs—transforms AI and information literacy concepts into collaborative challenges. Through a …

"At one point that evening, after the conversation had moved from travel to work and then to responsibility, Marium paused and asked me what I did. It was not the transactional question that so often fills conference hallways, asked politely and quickly abandoned, but a genuine inquiry. When I told her that I chair the Artificial Intelligence Committee at Leatherby Libraries at Chapman University, and that my work centers on AI literacy, governance, and institutional decision-making rather than promotion or blind adoption, something subtle changed."

The Music Information Literacy course taught by the Performing Arts Librarian at Chapman University’s Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music has evolved in its format and pedagogical approach over the period of 8 years. In this talk, I discuss this evolution from its inception into its present version; a hybrid of online asynchronous learning modules and in-person instruction and activities. This presentation is an update to a previous talk (2016) and poster (2018) at Music Library Association Annual Meetings, both of which focused on specific aspects of the Music Information Literacy course. I discuss the benefits that became evident during the online …

Online health misinformation is a growing problem, and health information professionals and consumers would benefit from an evaluation of health websites for reliability and trustworthiness. Terms from the Google COVID-19 Search Trends dataset were searched on Google to determine the most frequently appearing consumer health information websites. The quality of the resulting top five websites was evaluated. The top five websites that appeared most frequently were WebMD, Mayo Clinic, Healthline, MedlinePlus, and Medical News Today, respectively. All websites, except Medline Plus, received HONcode certification. Based on DISCERN and CRAAP scores, MedlinePlus was found to be the most reliable health website.

Standardized Assessment Of Information Literacy Skills: What The Sails Tests Reveal Over Time, Carolyn J. Radcliff, Kevin Ross, Annie Knight
Library Presentations, Posters, and Audiovisual Materials
What can standardized assessments tell us about the information literacy levels of our students? When an institution chooses to use a national assessment, the institution is faced with negotiating the existing testing process and making sense of the results within the local context. Chapman University and its sister institution Brandman University have measured information literacy for several years with the Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy Skills (SAILS). In this presentation we compare three models of implementation: (1) administering the SAILS cohort test to incoming freshmen; (2) giving the SAILS individual-scores test to freshmen and seniors; and (3) administering the SAILS …

This exploratory study examines information-seeking about the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (i.e. healthcare reform) in relation to the potential barriers of uncertainty, uncertainty discrepancy, and low health self-efficacy. Adult United States participants completed an anonymous online survey about their perceptions and understanding of healthcare reform. Results confirmed recent literature, suggesting a complex relationship between information-seeking and uncertainty. Specifically, for this sample, significant positive relationships were observed between information-seeking about healthcare reform and uncertainty, uncertainty discrepancy, health self-efficacy. Further, uncertainty discrepancy was the potential barrier that accounted for the most variance in predicting information-seeking.Implications of these findings for improving …
