Integrating Student Information Competencies Into Library Services, Jeanne M. Brown
Integrating Student Information Competencies Into Library Services, Jeanne M. Brown
Library Faculty Research
Many in the library field would argue that we have begun to perceive ourselves differently – especially in academic libraries. ALA’s Association of College and Research Libraries has been instrumental in creating or promoting a sea-change and much has gone into projecting an image of the librarian as an integral part of the educational enterprise. The message is that librarians are/ are becoming teachers.

Transforming Teachers Into Teacher Researchers: How To Become Information Literate Teacher Researchers And Model Information Literacy For Student Researchers, Susan Kendall, Mary Nino, Lorene Sisson
Faculty and Staff Publications
Information literacy is one of the major areas emphasized by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). According to NCATE, all candidates in school settings must be able to systematically integrate information literacy in Pre-K and K-12 school curriculum to assist student learning. The 21st century requires information literate teacher-researchers who are capable of meeting the standards set by the professional organizations such as (NCATE), the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and the American Association of School Librarians (AASL). Teaching is no longer finite knowledge distributed by the teacher and returned upon demand. Critical thinking, …

Connecting With Aim: The Search For A Virtual Reference Niche, Lucretia Mcculley, Olivia Reinauer
University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
Launching virtual chat reference services at Boatwright Library at the University of Richmond has been an interesting challenge of “trial and error” over the years. After trying several different software programs and staffing options, librarians have finally found a niche with AOL’s Instant Messenger service. The first section of the article describes a path of experimentation, including early collaborations with the computing services help desk, staffing patterns within the library, technical and financial challenges with virtual reference software, and attempts to get students to use reference chat services. The second half of the case study will describe the great success …

It seems like so many IP related Websites you visit invite you to join their free email list to keep you up to date. Sources span a wide spectrum including governmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, educational institutions, consulting services, law firms, commercial publishers and more. These sources span the spectrum from free, to low fee to premium pricing. With all of this information overload and choices, how do you differentiate and choose news sources?
The goals of this article are twofold. Goal one is to present a survey of types and categories of IP news tools available to IP researchers. Since …

Pierce Law is consistently ranked among the top law schools training IP professionals. I have taught IP legal research, patent, trademark and copyright searching to hundreds of students and IP professionals in Pierce Law Graduate Programs. I have tackled hundreds of reference and research questions as well as working on countless projects requiring IP information. So I have been faced with challenges and …
Strategies For Improving Instruction & Services To English Language Learners In The High School Library Media Center, Eileen Ray
All Graduate Projects
One of the biggest challenges facing librarians in schools today is working with students who are just learning the English language. An extensive body of literature and research related to school library media centers and English Language Learners was reviewed to address this challenge. On the basis of this research, a handbook was created to help fill the gap between the instruction librarians receive in library methodology courses and the reality in which librarians work every day. The handbook includes eight strategies addressing four areas of need: information literacy instruction, the promotion ofliteracy, the development of technological skills and the …
Bibliography Versus Auto-Bibliography: Tackling The Transformation Of Traditions In The Research Process, Nancy Babb
Bibliography Versus Auto-Bibliography: Tackling The Transformation Of Traditions In The Research Process, Nancy Babb
Law Librarian Journal Articles
Ms. Babb reports on a study conducted to determine whether researchers will identify the same works recommended by scholarly bibliographies if their searching is limited to the confines of the library catalog and its subject headings. She explores how the auto-bibliography of the catalog compares to more traditionally compiled bibliographies, and what—if anything—is sacrificed when users rely upon auto-bibliography rather than scholarly bibliography.
Tiered Reference: The New Landscape Of The Frontlines, Susan Gardner
Tiered Reference: The New Landscape Of The Frontlines, Susan Gardner
E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)
Introduction
When one walks into a typical academic library today, he or she is hard-pressed to see a reference librarian in plain view working at a public services desk. The well marked “reference desk” of yore, staffed by a smiling librarian and once a staple of every traditional academic library, has evolved into a less visible, more amorphous facility. Most libraries now use a new service strategy called “tiered reference,” whereby the initial reference contact point is with trained students or paraprofessionals at a general service desk. These non-librarians field all manner of questions, including directional, computing, and occasionally reference. …
