Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study carried out the scientometric analysis of road traffic accident research in India from 1977 to 2020. It aimed to examine type of publications with their citations and usage, the year wise publication and citation growth, most preferred journals, authors’ preference of keywords used, collaboration of Indian authors, authorship pattern and most prolific authors, and top contributing organizations. During 44 years of study, 1,132 research items were published and indexed in Web of Science (WoS) bibliographic database. Analysis discovered that number of publications increased from one (0.08%) in 1977 to 182 (16.07%) in 2018 and observed good progress in …

The Civil War Letters Of David W. Voyles, M. D., Mary K Marlatt

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Dr. David W. Voyles (1834–1899) of Washington County, Indiana, served as Assistant Surgeon and Surgeon with the 66th Indiana Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The letters of Dr. Voyles to his wife Susan, dating from November 1862 to January 1864, provide a glimpse into the mind of an educated, thoughtful man. Voyles wrote eloquently about the war, his political views (Republican and antislavery), and, like so many other soldiers, the lack of letters from home. Archivist Mary K. Marlatt has transcribed and edited the letters. Her introduction provides information on Voyles, his family, his regiment, and his life after …

Objective: Promoting health and determining the level of health literacy is one of the most important indicators in each society. This study was conducted with the aim of evaluating the health literacy status among librarians of Azad universities and medical sciences regarding the impact of librarians on their individual health and their role in disseminating health information that promotes health. Background: Changes to our hospital’s performance review process required Clinical Nurse IIIs and IVs to complete an annual Evidence Based Practice (EBP) or Quality Improvement (QI) project in order to maintain or advance their status on the Clinical Ladder. Nurse Researcher met with Clinical Nurse IIs, IIIs and IVs to review the requirements and held Proposal Writing sessions to prepare nurses. All attendees were referred to Librarian-led literature search classes. Researcher met with nurses individually to discuss projects and sent nurses to consult with Librarian. The Health Sciences Library (HSL) at Stony Brook University along with the School of Medicine were motivated to make improvements in seating and hours based on survey results from an LCME self-study. Preparation for the site visit from the Liaison Committee for Medical Education helped to garner resources and support for this initiative. To meet the evolving needs of the HSL patrons, librarians completed an overdue collection assessment project which allowed for 142 new seats, including newly designed spaces and furnishings. Ongoing assessment of the redesigned space will be conducted to evaluate success and areas for continued improvement.

A Practical Guide To Scholarly Activity For Health Sciences Librarians, Terri Gotschall, Shalu Gillum, Nadine Dexter

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This guide to scholarly activities provides early- and mid-career health sciences librarians with a path to immersing in scholarly activities. The four levels walk librarians through increasing stages of scholarship. Early-career librarians will begin at the first level, navigating from discovering mentors and areas of research interest to level two, publishing a resource or book review and finding their first public speaking opportunity. More experienced librarians will find where they are on the path and continue to build their scholarship all the way to conducting and publishing original research and becoming leaders in their field.

The Accidental Academic Library: Meeting The Needs Of A Health System–Affiliated University, Heather Martin

Background: In 2017 a small liberal arts college affiliated with a large western health system was re-branded, and a School of Health Professions was created to prepare for future staffing shortages and to train the next generation of healthcare workers. Instead of relying solely upon its own library, University administration reached out to the health system library to meet the information needs of this new group of students, most of whom were active employees of the healthcare enterprise. Background: In 2018 Providence St. Joseph Health launched an institutional repository to showcase research in a global and consumable way. Year one comprised of establishing the repository, gathering materials, and promoting services to administrators, clinical, and research staff.

Year two built on the momentum of the initial buy-in, focusing on growing submissions, incorporating special collections, and detailed marketing outreach utilizing altmetrics.

Use, Perceptions, And Awareness Of Libguides Among Undergraduate And Graduate Health Professions Students, John Carey, Ajatshatru Pathak, Sarah C. Johnson

Publications and Research

Objective–This study investigated usage, perceptions, and awareness of library research guides created using Springshare’s LibGuides among undergraduate and graduate health professions students.

Methods–The researchers recruited 100 health professions students in April 2017 from Hunter College, a senior college within the City University of New York system. Participants were asked to complete a paper survey to ascertain their use, perceptions, and awareness of Springhare’s LibGuides.

Results–Nearly two-thirds of study participants were not aware of library-created LibGuides and 68% had never used this tool. Compared to undergraduates, graduate students were more likely to be aware of LibGuides. The use of LibGuides was …

Graduate Occupational Therapy Students: Communication And Research Preferences From Three University Libraries, Lisa A. Adriani, Daniel G. Kipnis, Ronda I. Kolbin, Daniel Verbit

Libraries Scholarship

Library liaisons from three universities distributed an anonymous survey to graduate occupational therapy students to gauge preferred methods of communication when conducting research. This article discusses three findings: whom the students prefer to turn to when seeking research assistance, which methods of communication students prefer, and how long students spend searching before asking for assistance. From 193 responses, the liaisons reasoned that students prefer consulting with their peers before seeking help from librarians or faculty or instructors and they prefer assistance face-to-face. Additionally, the majority are willing to research from 30 minutes to 1 hour before seeking research help.
