Background: Our health system library fields thousands of requests for literature searches each year in support of research, policy, evidence-based practice projects, and care for individual patients. With fewer library staff than comparable institutions and an engaged, multidisciplinary clinical workforce, we face ongoing pressures to do more with less and to demonstrate our value.

Background:

The Providence Library team has not had a systematic way to gather feedback from our users regarding our literature review service. While we receive many grateful responses to our literature searches, we need more detailed, consistent information about our impacts to inform leadership and improve our services. Providence’s institutional repository Digital Commons launched in 2018, serving as the enterprise’s scholarly activity repository. After several years of successful repository usage and readership tracking, research administration initiated a new request: peer review tracking. The repository previously tracked number of article submissions but did not assess if content was published in peer reviewed journals. How can we retroactively and proactively track peer reviewed articles on our institutional repository? Simple ask, complicated answer.

Amidst shrinking staffing levels and expanding business, a health system library department developed a peer-learning program in order to build literature search capacity and self-efficacy amongst librarians and library support staff.

Library staff are partnered and rotate monthly; pairs include those in same and different job roles and experience levels. Background: A chance encounter at work led to an innovative and rewarding partnership between a large health system library and a storytelling program whose mission is to give patients, loved ones, and caregivers a sacred space to share their stories and make healthcare more humane.

Background: Amidst shrinking staff and increased demand for services, a peer-learning program was developed to build literature search capacity and self-efficacy amongst staff at a large health system. A secondary objective of this program was to provide team-building opportunities for colleagues who may not work together directly. Health disparities within Asian and Pacific Islander (API) communities are often masked due to aggregated data. Lack of adequate data limits required health care services for these communities. While moving forward toward health equity, it is critical that disparities for API communities are acknowledged and addressed. This article focuses on the issues of aggregated data for API communities followed by suggestions on how health sciences librarians can support and promote better practices for data disaggregation.

In 2018 Providence launched its Digital Commons Institutional Repository (IR) becoming one of only a small group of large health systems providing such a service. In nearing the end of Year 4 there has been sustained growth and continued engagement of this initiative. Expanding on the initial ask from senior leadership to simply track and compile Providence scholarly activity, subsequent years saw significant development in scope and scale of the IR. New projects included the creation of special collections, including: COVID-19 Research; Environmental Stewardship; Genomics; Diversity & Inclusion; and a Patents collection. Background: Changes to our hospital’s performance review process required Clinical Nurse IIIs and IVs to complete an annual Evidence Based Practice (EBP) or Quality Improvement (QI) project in order to maintain or advance their status on the Clinical Ladder. Nurse Researcher met with Clinical Nurse IIs, IIIs and IVs to review the requirements and held Proposal Writing sessions to prepare nurses. All attendees were referred to Librarian-led literature search classes. Researcher met with nurses individually to discuss projects and sent nurses to consult with Librarian. Background: In 2017 a small liberal arts college affiliated with a large western health system was re-branded, and a School of Health Professions was created to prepare for future staffing shortages and to train the next generation of healthcare workers. Instead of relying solely upon its own library, University administration reached out to the health system library to meet the information needs of this new group of students, most of whom were active employees of the healthcare enterprise. Background: In 2018 Providence St. Joseph Health launched an institutional repository to showcase research in a global and consumable way. Year one comprised of establishing the repository, gathering materials, and promoting services to administrators, clinical, and research staff.

Year two built on the momentum of the initial buy-in, focusing on growing submissions, incorporating special collections, and detailed marketing outreach utilizing altmetrics.
