Macro-Level Diffusion Of A Methodological Knowledge Innovation: Research Synthesis Methods, 1972-2011, Laura Sheble

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

Use of research synthesis methods has contributed to changes in research practices. In disciplinary literatures, authors indicate motivations to use the methods include needs to (a) translate research-based knowledge to inform practice and policy decisions, and (b) integrate relatively large and diverse knowledge bases to increase the generality of results and yield novel insights or explanations. This review presents two histories of the diffusion of research synthesis methods: a narrative history based primarily in the health and social sciences; and a bibliometric overview across science broadly. Engagement with research synthesis was strongly correlated with evidence-based practice (EBP), and moderately with …

Challenges And Opportunities: One Academic Library, Seven Hospitals And A Consortialmove, Melanie Mcgurr, Demetria Patrick

Research, Publications, and Presentations

This presentation explores a three-phase project that involved switching from a shared server hosted in a state consortia to a hosted service with Innovative Interfaces, along with a long overdue upgrade to Sierra. Phase I and II were the most challenging and work intensive and involved the most planning by the NEOMED staff. These challenges also brought our problem areas within the consortia to light. Throughout phase I and II, we improved our communication, stressed the importance of autonomy at the hospitals, and encouraged the staff to work directly with their IT and vendors. We created checklists for the hospitals …

Collaboration Challenges In Systematic Reviews: A Survey Of Health Sciences Librarians, Joey Nicholson, Aileen Mccrillis, Jeff D. Williams

Student Articles, Chapters, Presentations, Learning Objects

Objective: While many librarians have been asked to participate in systematic reviews with researchers, often these researchers are not familiar with the systematic review process or the appropriate role for librarians. The purpose of this study was to identify the challenges and barriers that librarians face when collaborating on systematic reviews. To take a wider view of the whole process of collaborating on systematic reviews, the authors deliberately focused on interpersonal and methodological issues other than searching itself. Methods: To characterize the biggest challenges that librarians face while collaborating on systematic review projects, we used a web-based survey. The thirteen-item …
