Integrating Digital Archives & Scholarship: Raising Awareness Of Library Historical Collections, Alice W. Sherwood

Since 2022, The TMC Library started using Digital Commons Exhibits, adding 15k items to its 18yr institutional repository to include more library archival materials. Traffic of archival collections jumped from 4k, 36k to 107k downloads in 2024, bringing greater impact to not only archives, but the entire library community.

Other beneficial impacts have been identified since additional archival materials have been integrated within our institutional repository. Other than more people who have been accessing McGovern Historical Center using their services and materials, The TMC Library has noticed changes since more download traffic has been noticed on our institutional repository. The Texas Medical Center (TMC) is home to the largest concentration of medical professionals and experts anywhere in the world. Collectively, the Texas Medical Center is the largest employer in Houston and the 8th largest business district in the United States. The TMC includes 50 medicine-related institutions, including 21 hospitals and two specialty institutions, two medical schools, six nursing schools, and schools of dentistry, public health, and pharmacy. On April 5th, 2005, the first article was deposited in Digital Commons@TMC. Since then, more than 34,000 items have been added, including dissertations/theses and projects, archival materialsfrom John P. McGovern Historical Collections & Research Center and content from seven open access peer-reviewed academic journals hosted on the platform.

Since fall of 2024, a new collection, Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Project Abstract has been added to DigitalCommon@TMC, an online repository sponsored by The TMC Library. This collection now has 18 total submissions, many with posters available for download, with 106 total downloads up to date.

Elsevier has recently highlighted The TMC Library’s Digital Commons Exhibits as one of their “Current DC Exhibit Customers” featured on their Digital Commons Exhibits page. Since 2023, The TMC Library started to add Digital Commons Exhibits to this online collection available to users worldwide. Currently there are 8 regular exhibits, as well as a scrolling exhibit available featuring a few of the following: Historical A/V, Houston’s Fight Against Tuberculosis and Christmas Seals (1911-1980s) and The History of the Texas Medical Center Library: From 1915 to Present.

To provide better service to the growing, and increasingly international, Digital Commons community, Google Maps on  Digital Commons Dashboards Digital Commons Dashboards and Author Dashboards was replaced with Bing Maps. Readership Activity Maps will continue using Google Maps. Although these maps may look slightly different, there is no difference in their functionality.

Selections From The Papers Of Murdina Macfarquhar Desmond, Md Digitized And Online, Alice Sherwood

Almost two hundred items from the Murdina MacFarquhar Desmond, MD papers have been digitized and are now available online. Dr. Desmond (1916-2003) contributed to the fields of pediatrics and neonatology during her long tenure (1948-1986) on the pediatrics faculty of Baylor College of Medicine and service to Jefferson Davis Hospital and Texas Children’s Hospital.

The first student journal, "Nexus Health Policy Journal," launched on Digital Commons@TMC. This is a first-of-its-kind student-run, peer-reviewed journal founded in 2023 and managed by Students for Social Organization, Advocacy, and Policy.

Digital Commons@TMC, an online repository sponsored by The TMC Library, experienced a busy year with 702 new articles, images, dissertations, and audio-visual materials submissions (255% increase from 2022), bringing the total count to 8,338, viewed monthly by 7,066 institutions and 210 countries (up 5.5% from 2022) around the world.

The Digital Commons@TMC also includes historical materials. The McGovern Historical Center recently digitized and shared online more than 50 archival films, videos, and sound recordings. Digitization was made possible by funding from the South Central Academic Medical Libraries Consortium.

2022 was a busy year for this online repository, with an additional 350+ works added, which include dissertations and theses and 2 additional peer-reviewed e-journals. Also, there are a number of exhibits available since November, with most materials from these exhibits contributed by The McGovern Historical Center.

Two latest additions to the exhibits are Houston’s Fight against Tuberculosis and Christmas Seals (1911-1980s) and Windows into McGovern Historical Center. Check it out!

This presentation examines the process of building a conference collection on Digital Commons with a discussion on stakeholder collaboration, collection architecture, and promotion, and reciprocal benefit to both scholars and repository managers.

Conference collections enhance attendees' experiences by creating a live archive of conference materials, viewable both during and after the event. Collections provide meaningful metrics for interactions with conference materials, which exist as grey literature that may otherwise go unseen by wider audiences. Building conference collections vary in time and complexity, based on stakeholder needs and overall vision for the conference and its attendees. Creating conference collections that are …

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)

In 2017 the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library partnered with The George Washington University School of Nursing to create a permanent digital archive for their Doctor of Nursing Practice project collection in our instance of Digital Commons. DNP projects are a unique type of content because they provide important research about nursing practices, but often go unpublished elsewhere. The GW DNP collection now contains over 120 items that have been downloaded over 95,000 times and therefore we were eager to explore additional avenues for disseminating this content beyond our IR and its subsequent indexing platforms. DigitalCommons@TMC is an open-access resource with more than 7,450 articles, making almost all full-text content accessible worldwide. If you are affiliated with a TMC institution when the work is created, and you own the copyright of the research publication, you can contribute to this repository. Most research can be submitted electronically, you would need a Bepress account prior to submitting your research. Some publications may not allow authors to submit directly, and there is also generally a 12-month embargo period for dissertation submission.
