From The Archives: Rediscovering The John Preston Papers, Isabella Sumner

The John Preston, MD Papers, the newest collection at the McGovern Historical Center, contain letters and institutional records documenting life at the Austin State Lunatic Asylum—now Austin State Hospital—during Dr. Preston's 36 years as superintendent. Materials include correspondence from patient's families, physicians, judges, sheriffs, and attorneys, along with budgets, patient records, and even menus for staff and patients. Together, they offer a window into mental health care in Texas during the early 20th century.

On April 5th, 2005, the first article was deposited in DigitalCommons@TMC. Since then, 44.1k items have been deposited into our institutional repository. On average, DigitalCommons@TMC is viewed on average by 185+ countries, 3200+ institutions, seeing 185k downloads monthly. Audio visual streaming materials have been hosted on DigitalCommons@TMC since 2023, and the system counts more than 1,750+ streams.

This repository reached its 3 million downloads milestone in October 2025, and we are celebrating reaching the milestone of 4 million total downloads in late April 2026. Collection highlights include open access journals, theses and dissertations, library archives and …

This special exhibit highlights treasures from the rare book collections, with special focus on items with engraved illustrations. Find the exhibit inside the TMC Library, in the display cases near the Dr. Cooley portrait.
