The Texas Medical Center (TMC) is home to the largest concentration of medical professionals and experts anywhere in the world. Collectively, the Texas Medical Center is the largest employer in Houston and the 8th largest business district in the United States. The TMC includes 50 medicine-related institutions, including 21 hospitals and two specialty institutions, two medical schools, six nursing schools, and schools of dentistry, public health, and pharmacy. [Purpose/significance] To evaluate the information ecological environment quality of online health communities, reveal the problems existing in the information ecological environment quality of online health communities, and put forward specific suggestions, in order to provide reference for the healthy development of online health communities.

Supplemental Data: Analyzing Point Of Care Tools Through Faculty, Resident, And Stakeholder Buy-In: Promises And Pitfalls, J. Michael Lindsay

Costs for UpToDate, the library’s primary point of care clinical tool, had increased to half of the acquisitions budget but without user affiliation data to facilitate cost sharing. A working group led by librarians was formed to review alternatives. Surveys indicated users preferred UpToDate and renewal was recommended by the working group, with costs being shared between the academic unit and the hospital. These results showed that the library can effectively lead analysis projects with this level of visibility, but persuading users to consider alternatives to a trusted tool can be challenging.

Although called a “mini-digitization,” the recent project to scan six photographs from the IC 086 Hermann Hospital Archive Records is part of a larger effort. With help from a UTHealth community member, the McGovern Historical Center now has digital files and a detailed inventory for about 185 blueprints of the Hermann Professional Building. Objective:

Young adults in South Carolina face increasing challenges when seeking accurate sexual health information due to limitations in traditional and authoritative sexual health education and healthcare access. This paper investigates the future of libraries and health science librarians by exploring how young adults use social media platforms to seek sexual health information. It identifies the primary barriers young adults face and investigates opportunities for developing innovative digital health literacy resources.

Methods:

In honor of this week, we’re excited to highlight one of the newest collections in the Dissertations, Theses & Projects section of Digital Commons@TMC: scholarly work from UTHealth’s Cizik School of Nursing Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program. Since launching on September 1st, over 60 student abstracts, many accompanied by project posters, have been submitted. These works have already received more than 1,000 downloads a testament to their impact and reach.

In 2015, Jefferson Health completed the process of merging with Abington Hospital. In 2021, Jefferson Health completed the process of merging with Einstein Philadelphia Hospital. Graduate Medical Education (GME) leadership at both hospitals, in conjunction with the Thomas Jefferson University Libraries' leadership, identified a need for a clinical librarian to provide library support and services to their faculty, residents, fellows, and staff, building on a model introduced in 2019.¹ Library support is essential to fulfilling the scholarly output requirements of ACGME accreditation.² This was a new position created to help integrate both hospital networks into Jefferson Health …

In the early 20th century, polio was one of the most feared diseases in the world. It struck quickly, and for some, left lasting paralysis—especially in the muscles that control breathing. That’s where the iron lung came in.

This large, capsule-like machine enclosed a patient’s body up to the neck in an airtight chamber. Through shifts in air pressure, it caused the chest to rise and fall, simulating natural breathing.
