Predictable Book Shifting, Joshua Lambert

There are many methods to carry out a library book shift but those methods allow for varying degrees of predictability. The Bookshift.py script, when used in conjunction with accurate measurements of a library’s collection and shelving, provides library staff with predictability, flexibility, and the ability to shift in parallel. For every shelf, the script outputs a phrase such as the following, “The last book from this shelf goes 12.3 in/cm into shelf 776.” While complicated shifts can still create surprises, using Bookshift.py or similar methods typically make those surprises easy to correct.

While there are studies and resources about training and retaining student workers in an academic library, there is little research on whether the library’s collection classification can have an effect on library student workers’ perception on their work and job fulfillment. While employed at the West Coast Baptist College (WCBC) Library, library student workers developed opinions on library work in general as well as their perception on both the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) and the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) while the library converted from the former to the latter. In the Summer of 2022, Rich Bergstrom (class of 1994) asked that the Archives store the time capsule that his class had put together before they graduated. Per the plan, the capsule was opened at the 20 – year reunion, a few things were added, and it was then reopened again at the reunion five years later. This exhibit includes selections from the time capsule, including samples of the orange carpeting, Ramen Noodle packages, the audio tape Boyz II Men (with the favorite song of the class “It’s so Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday,” and a bedsheet with everyone’s …

Academic publishing processes are shaped by the ways in which scholars within the field review and evaluate the work of their peers. In an ideal world, these methods would simply promote the publication of the best forms of research without prejudice or subjectivity. In reality, issues such as Knobloch-Westerwick, Glynn, and Huge’s Matilda effect, Merton’s Matthew effect, Blank’s institution bias, and Robert’s and Verhoef’s gender bias shape the ways that scholarly inquiry are evaluated.

National Data Sets And Calculating Percentile Ranks: A Guide For Benchmarking Library Collection Spending, Christine Mcevilly

National data sets can be used by a librarian to compare library collection (materials) spending to that of similar schools, even if the librarian has little or no experience in statistics or database management tools. Percentile rank is a simple descriptive statistic that provides a way to present data with maximum impact on faculty and administrators who make funding decisions. Librarians must combine knowledge of their local circumstances with a basic understanding of the structure of the datasets. Forecasting Database Usage During The Height Of Covid-19, Chris Sharpe, David Evans

As with other catastrophic events, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted higher education and library services. The authors examine the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on usage of health databases in 2020. They use time series analysis to create a forecast based on previous years’ activities, and then compare it with actual database usage during the pandemic. The results show an initial increase in searches for the first full month of the pandemic, but then match the expected forecast data and decrease during summer and early fall months. Full-Text Retrievals And Ebsco Discovery Service: Assessing Usage Of E-Journals Across Multiple Platforms, Simon Robins

This study utilizes COUNTER 5 data from the University of Dayton (UD) to measure full-text retrievals of e-journal articles from five major academic journal publishers (Taylor & Francis, SAGE, Oxford, Wiley, and Springer). Usage data from these publishers’ e-journals within EBSCO is compared to the same content when accessed from publisher platforms such as Wiley Online Library or SpringerLINK. Building on previous studies that have largely focused on links (or referrals) from the library discovery layer to publisher platforms, this study analyzes usage of full text-articles stored within EBSCO Discovery Service and EBSCOhost subject databases to consider how these full-text …

New Exhibit Features Texas State Board Of Medical Examiners Records, Matt Richardson

If you have been visited the library lately, you will notice there is a new exhibit on the first floor.

This exhibit highlights the extensive Texas State Board of Medical Examiners records (IC 058) of two physicians whose stories stood out. Hesiquio Rodriguez and Moore Yen. Though they were applying to the Texas State Board back in the 1950s and 1960s, Heisiquio Rodriguez’ and Moore Yen’s stories highlight themes that continue to resonate today.

Using Student Researchers To Assess The Digital Collections User Experience, Rebecca A. Wiederhold, Lindsey Memory, Jonathan Jarvis, Greg Seppi, Madeleine Meldrum, Hannah Bozue

Following the closure of the Harold B. Lee Library’s special collections during the pandemic, the presenters designed a study to assess the usability of our CONTENTdm system. The library collaborated with a sociology professor to have students from his qualitative research methods class administer the study, observing other undergraduates using the system to perform tasks, and interviewing them about their experiences. In this presentation, the librarians, the sociology professor, and two students will share lessons learned from this experience, including small disappointments and unexpected benefits. We’ll also share the study methodology and suggestions for optimizing this type of professional collaboration …
