Beyond A Box Of Documents: The Collaborative Partnership Behind The Oregon Chinese Disinterment Documents Collection, Natalia M. Fernández, Cristine Paschild

This article is a case study of a collaboration between the Oregon Multicultural Archives of Oregon State University, Portland State University Library's Special Collections, the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (CCBA), and the Northwest News Network to preserve and make accessible a recovered box of Oregon Chinese disinterment documents. By examining what influenced and engaged each partner, this case study offers an opportunity to better understand the motivations of diverse stakeholders in a "post-custodial era" project that challenges traditional practices of custody, control, and access.

Senior Design Theses: Moving To An Electronic Collection By Collaborating With The School Of Engineering, Susan K. Boyd

For years, the University Library served as a literal “storage room” for the latest ten years of printed senior design or capstone theses. Both the receiving and cataloging of student undergraduate work were at best “spotty,” and incomplete. By working with the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies, and departmental administrative assistants, the library and the School of Engineering developed a new process for electronic submission of these documents, and this in turn resulted in the creation of the University Library’s institutional repository called “Scholar Commons.” The first collection within Scholar Commons will showcase the senior design theses. On May 3, 2013, the two Hostos librarians teamed up with two librarians of Lehman College’s Leonard Lief Library at the Bronx EdTech Showcase to address the challenges and joys of e-books. Their hour-long presentation, focused on trends in ebooks, technical issues such as DRM and formats, CUNY’s eBook collections, and the challenges of informing students and faculty about e-books.

Discovery On A Budget: Improved Searching Without A Web-Scale Discovery Product, Chris Bulock, Lynnette Fields

Discovery is a key component of a library's services, and user expectation are high. Even if a Web-scale discovery system is not in the cards, there is plenty a library can do to improve discovery for their users. Librarians at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville have conducted a series of user studies focused on discovery tasks using the library's website and catalog. The lessons learned fro these studies have led to an ongoing redesign of the library's web-site as well as recommendations for instruction. This paper shares successful strategies for evaluating and improving discovery, no expensive software or programming skills necessary.

This session will cover library services on mobile devices such as e-books, e-journals, electronic indexes, and other mobile applications. We will discuss those subscription services that are mobile ready like EBSCOhost and LibGuides and mobile add-ons such as the iPad app for The Chronicle and the impact this has on licensing and support.

Journals Supporting Terrorism Research: Identification And Investigation Into Their Impact On The Social Sciences, Daryl R. Bullis, Richard Irving

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

A citation analysis of two preeminent terrorism journals (Terrorism and Political Violence and Studies in Conflict and Terrorism) was used to identify 37 additional social science journals of significant importance to terrorism research. Citation data extracted from the Web of Science database was used to investigate the impact of the two journals on the social science journal literature. The impact of the two journals was also analyzed in terms of SSCI subject categories. This study could provide useful information for collection development librarians interested in the social sciences.

Purpose – While academic libraries have often purchased proprietary software to assess patron satisfaction, the open source movement has generated high-quality software available free of charge. These tools are useful alternatives in an era marked by tremendous budget cuts familiar to many academic libraries.
