Poster session following the lightning talk at 2018 NDSA Forum Opening
Plenary about the role of the digital librarian and how it relates to digital
preservation.

It’s common misconception digital librarians are involved only in
digitizing historic materials. In fact managing digital projects is only
their visible role. Once it’s over, librarians embrace their new role of
information architects directly engaged in the digital preservation process
of archiving master files. The digital librarian is that unit in the prep
process for digital preservation that ensures meticulously organized archival

Purpose: The purpose of our project is to assess and enhance kpLibraries’ national e-book collection and to provide the appropriate e-resources and materials for our patrons. The project supports kpLibraries' national Resource Management policy that requires maintenance of a “current, authoritative collection of books, multimedia, and electronic materials in the areas of health sciences, clinical, educational, professional development, patient care services and consumer health information...”. We aim to further develop all processes of collection development for our e-book collection and to characterize interlibrary library loan (ILL) and book request usage patterns.

This introductory level presentation discusses the basics of digitizing
collections from start to finish. The author reveals some secrets as well as
tips and tricks for achieving efficiency and sustainability of digital
projects. All libraries have unique collections that deserve to gain more
publicity. This crash course targets librarians passionate to learn how to
create efficient workflows and explains in details all steps involved in
digitization - from selection, through preparation, digitization, object
description (metadata) to publishing online.

Leon Lederman, Honoring Our Founder, Christian D. Nøkkentved

Archives Exhibits

To honor Dr. Leon Lederman (15 July 1922-3 October 2018), a Nobel Laureate and former Director of Fermi Lab, and most importantly one of the founders of IMSA. After retiring as director of Fermi Lab, Dr. Lederman served as our resident scientist. In that capacity, he organized the Great Minds Program through which he invited scientists and other scholars to campus. Typically, the visitor would interact with students in the afternoon and then hold a more formal lecture in the evening, often open to the Aurora community.

Notice especially some of his wonderful doodles and cartoons included in this exhibit.

Dr. Leon Lederman was born 15 July, 1922 and passed away on 3 October, 2018. Dr. Lederman’s ideas expressed in the Urne Report (digitalcommons.imsa.edu/imsa_history/1/) led to the founding of IMSA in 1985 with the Charter Class arriving on campus in September of 1986.

The English author and lay theologian Charles Williams was an idiosyncratic, intriguing, perhaps intimidating subject. He was born in St. Albans near London in September 1886 and died in Oxford in May 1945. In that relatively brief life, his prodigious literary output encompassed virtually every form imaginable (novels, poetry, theology, critical reviews, plays, masques, detective story reviews, even a single short story). Elizabeth Wright (1962) commented on his “versatility and quantity” when describing “the size and scope of his published writings... The histories of the British East India Company, possessions, political influence, and economic ventures have shaped the dynamics of modern history. The enormity of the British East India Company (EIC) and other European trade companies’ impact on globalized world trade has been the subject of numerous studies. Yet, as many scholars have pointed out the topic has lacked proper attention regarding the Indian Ocean slave trade, particularly when it involved the transportation of people from nations other than from the continent of Africa.
