In 2013, after nearly two decades of operating in a distributed legacy Integrated Library System (ILS) environment on local servers, the Orbis Cascade Alliance, a consortium of public and private academic libraries in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, began a two-year-long process to migrate its 37 members to a shared implementation of Ex Libris's cloud-based Alma library management system (LMS) and Primo discovery interface. The Early American Cookbooks project is a carefully curated online collection of 1450 cookbooks published in the United States between 1800 and 1920. The purposes of the project are to create a freely available, searchable online collection of early American cookbooks, to offer an overview of the scope and contents of the collection, and to use digital humanities tools to explore trends and patterns in the metadata and the full text of the collection. The Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History at the University of Kentucky is recognized around the world as a leader and innovator in the collection and preservation of oral histories. The more than 9,000 interviews in our collection provide a unique look into Kentucky and American history.

While the Center for Oral History has developed an excellent stand-alone catalog of the collections, projects and interviews in the collection utilizing Drupal and DACS, we wanted to provide discovery through our online catalog, our discovery system (InfoKat Discovery) and WorldCat.

This chapter recounts the outcomes and experiences of six American librarians who participated in an international librarian exchange program that ran from spring 2010 through fall 2011. The exchange brought together the City University of New York (CUNY) and two universities in Shanghai, China: Shanghai University (SU) and Shanghai Normal University (SNU). The program was inspired, in part, by recognition of the diversity of CUNY’s student body and growing awareness of the increasing globalization of information and education. A frequently heard complaint about One Search from the user experience end is that it is "complicated" or "over-whelming," but it has its positive points, too. The key is in teaching patrons who may have never had any experience outside of Google and traditional OPACs how to use it. This presentation covers best practices on how to teach One Search to new users in a thoughtful, less stressful manner using the very tools inherent in the discovery system - and how the thought and practice of teaching searches in One Search differs from the traditional OPAC.

While on Voyager, the University of Kentucky had a committee dedicated to handling releases and policies for the system. During our migration to Alma and Primo we moved to taskforces to manage the migration, putting that committee on hold. Post-migration, we revived the ILS Committee and updated the charge to handle Alma/Primo releases and policies. This presentation will briefly discuss the procedures we’re using to manage Alma and Primo releases, training, set policies, and communicate with library staff post-migration. We’d like to leave time for audience participation to find out how others are managing these processes at their institutions.

The three Entity-Relationship Groups (E-R Groups) have formed the conceptual framework of cataloguing in FRBR since being established by IFLA in the late 1990s. These three groups define the entities and relationships of interest to FRBR cataloguers. Group 1 describes the Work, Expression, Manifestation, and Item, the parts that make up the whole of a catalogue record. Group 2 describes the responsibility relationships, ensuring proper attribution and ownership to people and corporations. Painless Portal Partnerships: Collaboration And Its Challenges For Small Organizations, Christine Mcevilly

This article addresses challenges inherent in collaborative archival projects involving both large institutions and small historical societies. It identifies these unique problems and outlines potential solutions to overcome these issues. Examples are drawn from the Portal to American Jewish History project and contextualized within the professional literature on ethnic or community archives and archival collaboration. This project collected metadata from a wide range of Jewish history archives and aggregated the records in a single searchable website.

The staff of Reference and Research Services at Edith Garland Dupré Library, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, determined that instructors and students of the School of Music & Performing Arts had difficulty locating scores for particular pieces of music due to no contents note in the catalog records. Reference brought this to Cataloging’s attention and suggested editing the MARC record contents note in SirsiDynix Workflows themselves.   Cataloging considered the feasibility of this course of action as well as other alternatives, such as purchasing enhanced records from a vendor. Ultimately, Cataloging discovered a workflow using MarcEdit and OCLC Connexion …

Libraries and archives have become increasingly reliant on student employees to perform duties essential to the daily work of making cultural heritage materials accessible to patrons. This article details how students are recruited, trained, managed, and mentored from the perspective of supervisors at the Digital Library of Georgia. Topics discussed include hiring procedures, training techniques, work assigned to undergraduate and graduate students, the handling of archival materials, digital imaging, metadata, and social media. The article will also examine methods for creating a rewarding and educational work environment for students that promotes the library profession.

Analog archival data can supplement modern digital research, but only if those data are preserved, described, and migrated to appropriate formats. The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU) is responsible for managing, archiving, and disseminating cryospheric and polar data. The clear majority of these data are digital, but the NSIDC also houses a collection of historical archival materials that include measurements related to the earth's glaciated regions prior to the development of modern instrumentation. Their formats, however, are not conducive to contemporary analysis, rendering them ostensibly “lost” to research. This paper describes …

Locating Wojnarowicz: Moving Through Library Systems, Structures And Technologies, Emily Drabinski, Alana Kumbier

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper asks critical questions about the role of classification structures and descriptive systems in generating new knowledge from library and archives collections. Grounded in theories of articulation advanced by Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, the authors posit that librarians and archivists might function better as translators across classifying systems, rather than as merely transcribers and builders of the systems themselves. The analysis looks to two collections of materials by and about queer artist and activist David Wojnarowicz to understand the varying ways libraries and archives construct stable articulations around shifting subjects of knowledge.

Investigation Of The Email Notice Issue In Aleph, Gordon Xu, Yi Chen

Based on experimental results and existing resources, the paper explored and identified the major contributing factors to the email notice issue, including local administrator status, Aleph client, mail server, Aleph system files, and security settings. The paper elaborated the troubleshooting process, and how to find the solution to the issue. The authors suggested recommendations based the lessons learned from the project experience. The project experience presented in this paper should be instructive for libraries solving the similar problems.

Improving Search Ranking Using A Composite Scoring Approach, Larry D. Snedden

In this thesis, the improvement to relevance in computerized search results is studied. Information search tools return ranked lists of documents ordered by the relevance of the documents to the user supplied search. Using a small number of words and phrases to represent complex ideas and concepts causes user search queries to be information sparse. This sparsity challenges search tools to locate relevant documents for users. A review of the challenges to information searches helps to identify the problems and offer suggestions in improving current information search tools.
