At UNLV Libraries, we understand the importance of linked data in helping to better service our users. We have designed and initiated a pilot project to apply linked data concepts to the practical task of transforming a sample set of our CONTENTdm digital collections data into future-oriented linked data. Her research interests include knowledge organization standards and systems, as well as the evaluation of libraries’ technical services. Many of our image collections live in the non-MARC world. Recognizing that fact, this workshop will discuss tools and standards that are available to guide decisions about record creation for digital images in MARC and non-MARC environments. A major focus will be on the methods and considerations in image analysis as a means to uncover information about an image that would be useful in all record environments. We will look at MARC and non-MARC records, and will include records created using AACR2 and RDA.

This session will look at how the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) model could be used to improve access to film and video. There will be a demonstration of a prototype end-user discovery interface (http:// blazing-sunset-24.heroku.com/) sponsored by OLAC and a discussion of a project using the XC Metadata Services Toolkit (http://www.extensiblecatalog.org/) to mine existing MARC data to populate this sort of interface. Participants will be asked to provide feedback and suggest future directions for this project.

Digitizing And Hosting Streaming Media Directly From Libraries, Cyrus Ford

The latest developments in streaming technologies allow direct access to media contents in real time through personal computers and mobile devices over the Internet. Ford’s presentation dealt with the different acquisition and distribution methods used in delivering a wide range of streaming video and audio resources to the faculty, staff, and students of the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, as well as with the attendant licensing and copyright issues. Ford also talked about the joint project conducted by the library and the UNLV Film Department, the goal of which is to digitize videos for teaching, learning, and research purposes.

Snakes In The Library: "Taking Up Serpents" In A Dvd Collection, Valerie Prescott Adams

This poster session provided an overview of an archival collection, The Hood-Williamson Archives on the Serpent Handlers of Southern Appalachia, at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The collection contains 184 DVD discs of original films that document the contemporary serpent handlers of Southern Appalachia from 1975 to 2004. Adams highlighted the creation and preservation processes, the metadata access to the collection, while emphasizing the importance of the unique collection to the scholars and researchers. Batch Enhancement Of Genre/Form Headings In Marc Records For Maps, Stacie A. Traill

Following the Library of Congress’s 2010 implementation of genre/form headings for cartographic materials, the University of Minnesota Libraries undertook a project to enhance and upgrade the genre/form headings and subdivisions in more than 50,000 existing catalog records for maps. This poster shows how the project evolved from its conception in Fall 2010 to its completion in Spring 2011. Project procedures were developed through analysis of ILS reports in Excel and extensive testing in MARCEdit. Record extraction, editing, and replacement were carefully timed to minimize impacts on cataloging work and ILS indexing. The presentation also covers lessons learned from the project. …

Automating Catalog Record Creation For Locally Digitized Collections, Lucas Mak

Michigan State University Libraries has been regu­larly digitizing its selected print collection and providing access to these digital items through the library catalog. Given this constant influx of locally digitized materials, a semi-automated batch process has been created to maximize cata­loging efficiency. This process produces catalog records of digital items from two sets of input files prepared by cataloging staff: MARC records of digitized print Items extracted from local ILS, and a lookup table consists of OCLC/SkyRiver numbers and filenames of digital items. Noaa Digital Collections: Archiving, Online Access, And Metadata Exchange, Anna Fiolek

Fiolek presented a summary of several projects and metadata exchange efforts conducted by the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Central Library. In giving details about one of the projects, Fiolek stated that for the last ten years the library has been cooperating with the NOAA Climate Database Modernization Program. As a result of this collaborative effort, more than 250,000 print documents have been scanned to PDF and TIFF formats, over 800 analog media converted into DVD, MOV, MP4, and AVI formats, and around 75,000 photographs born digitally or converted to high and regular resolution JPEG files for the NOAA …

The 2006-2007 task force was charged with creating a set of best practices for coding MARC 008/lang and 041 language information for videos, especially DVDs, and with using that exercise to examine whether any changes could be made to the MARC21 format (coding or directions) that would improve access to the multiple types of language information found on videos. The work of that task force resulted in a number of changes to the MARC format, which are described in appendix 1. The way I have unified the LGBTQ titles—all 700-odd of them—is by using a local information field in the catalog. Quick cataloging lesson for you non-librarians: when I talk about subject headings, for example Gay Culture, those go in a field designated by the number 650. This means that it’s a universal, standardized field and that the headings in those fields will be recognized anywhere.
