Libraries are increasingly exploring design approaches, but their utility has been overlooked in the area of metadata management. This article argues that metadata management should be considered a design discipline. Key elements of design epistemology and their relevance to cataloging and metadata work are explored through a case study of developing a workflow to update OCLC numbers in a library catalog. Conceptualizing metadata management through the lens of design provides a new view of the field that expands possibilities for education, advocacy, research, and practice.

Professional development offerings for cataloging and metadata practitioners primarily focus on "rules and tools" - the standards, guidelines, and software applications commonly used in the field. These areas of knowledge are important and foundational, but professionals also need competence in synthesizing this information to solve metadata problems. In this presentation, I will explore design epistemology as a way of understanding metadata management. I will apply design concepts and methods to reimagine metadata training and provide suggestions for on-the-job training approaches that support the development of these harder-to-teach skills.

Designing metadata workflows is a core competency for cataloging and metadata practitioners. Unlike many other competencies, metadata workflow design lacks a conceptual framework, hindering understanding and skill development. This article presents a framework for metadata workflows that describes processes for adding, enhancing, and removing metadata from library systems. The framework describes standard and custom workflows, including original and copy cataloging, withdrawals, system migrations, metadata creation, and record enhancement. A better understanding of metadata workflows facilitates the implementation of automation and batch processing and can inform staff training, professional development offerings, and library and information science curricula.

Many libraries have uncataloged collections or backlogs which could benefit from batch processing, but little guidance exists on how to conceptualize and plan such a project. I will share a framework I developed which categorizes types of batch cataloging projects and outlines the steps involved. I will also describe four projects we've done at JMU to illustrate how the framework can be applied to design a variety of metadata workflows.

This poster describes a project to automate portions of JMU Libraries' workflow for distributing Special Collections finding aids to various discovery platforms. Through the development of a custom Python app called Spaceport, we were able to greatly improve the efficiency and sustainability of this process while also providing a more consistent discovery experience for our patrons. The project also had broad impacts in other areas. Our incremental and collaborative approach provided space for professional development related to the project, supported evolving project goals and the process of adapting to the new workflow, and strengthened relationships between departments. Have you ever wished you could limit your Connexion batch search results to the one OCLC record with the most holdings? Or hoped for a way to confidently match those search results to existing metadata from your ILS without handling each record one by one? James Madison University Libraries' workflow for distributing its Special Collections finding aids to various discovery platforms historically involved a significant amount of manual data entry and hand-encoding. Through a series of small steps, we have been gradually improving this process by automating select tasks. I will share different iterations of our workflow, the automated solutions we've put into place, and the tools and technologies used, including XSLTs, APIs, and Spaceport, a custom Python app. As evidenced through the efficiencies, staff excitement, and other benefits we've observed, automation has transformed a previously tedious process while also facilitating the completion of other …

JMU Libraries distributes its Special Collections finding aids to a number of discovery platforms, a process which historically has involved a significant amount of hand-encoding and manual data entry. We recently developed and implemented Spaceport, a Python app that has revolutionized this workflow. This presentation provides an overview of the app's functionality, which includes generating EADs for Virginia Heritage, HTML files for upload to the Libraries website, and MARCXML records for our catalog and OCLC. It also describes the efficiencies and other benefits we have observed from Spaceport's use.

JMU Libraries & Educational Technologies participated in a 2017 pilot project with VIVA to present special collections records through a BIBFRAME discovery platform. This poster describes the project's goals, the steps we took to prepare our records for conversion into linked data by Zepheira, and our observations on usability of the discovery layer and the effects on search engine optimization.

The Virtual Library of Virginia Consortium (VIVA) contracted in 2016 with Zepheira and Atlas to launch a pilot project using archives/special collections records from ten member schools in a Linked Data experiment. The records are converted to Zepheira's form of BIBFRAME 1.0 and published in their Library.Link program. Zepheira's structured data approach to Linked Data web publication is extreme, unique, and promising. We will describe how James Madison University enriched its bib records with LC, FAST, and AAT URIs, what the resulting Zepheira structured data injection looks like, and how effectively the method is driving web traffic to our Library.Link …

DataQ is an IMLS-funded project led by the University of Colorado Boulder Libraries, GWLA, and GPN to develop an online knowledge-base of research data questions and answers curated for and by the library community. Publicly submitted questions to DataQ are reviewed by an Editorial Team of experts from 15 institutions across the United States. The site also includes links to resources, best practices, and practical approaches to working with researchers to address specific research data issues. This update from members of the Editorial Team will discuss outcomes and future directions following the first year of the DataQ project.
