From Bibliography To Documentography, Michael K. Buckland

Proceedings from the Document Academy

There is ambiguity in the use of the term bibliography for both the study of printed books and also for the listing of accessible intellectual resources. We address this ambiguity by examining two well-known anomalies: Donald F. Mckenzie’s assertion that bibliography should extend to all media, including culturally significant objects in the landscape and Suzanne Briet’s declaration that an antelope in a zoo is a document. This paper summarizes and extends an earlier, more detailed discussion (Buckland, 2018).

Present Study analysis 201 publications (1972-2008) of Nobel laureate Jeffrey C Hall, an American eminent scientist in geneticist. His publications received 18,896 citations and first paper was reported in Scopus in 1972, subsequently, he published 200 research papers in various journals. The collaboration coefficient of scientist is 0.89 and forty-three (43) are two authored publications, 22 are single authored, scientist has authored highest publication in decade III (1990-1999) with 81(40.30%) publications. The paper entitled "A pdf neuropeptide gene mutation and ablation of PDF neurons each cause severe abnormalities of behavioral circadian rhythms in Drosophila” published in 'Cell' journal in 2000 …

The purpose of the system is to collect, organize, and store scholarly publications, library and information science related resources created or contributed by CALA members and others in the library field. The CALASYS Committee will share the experiences of collecting data, creating metadata, and improving access to the data. Effective collaboration between archivists and technical services librarians can increase the discoverability of special collection materials. In this panel presentation, archivists and a technical services librarian from a medium-sized institution discussed archival tools available to preserve collections of digital content and how to make the collections available universitywide.

Working together, the panelists had created a plan to integrate these collections into the discovery layer so that metadata was indexed on a single user-friendly platform. After advertising the collections, they collected usage statistics to determine impact.

This poster illustrates basic introduction and concepts of linked data and how it relates to RDA and Bibframe. Currently catalogers in libraries are struggling with learning these new concepts and keeping up with our traditional cataloging knowledge and workflows. Linked data brings us a step closer to global bibliographic control. The MARC record is not going away any time soon but catalogers should be aware of these concepts and models as they are being developed for our workflows in the future.

Over the past 30 years, library discovery services have evolved through expanded OPACs, federated search systems employing broadcast searching; Web-scale discovery systems (WSDS) that aggregate metadata and full-text content into a single integrated index; and, currently, hybrid bento-style systems that use federated techniques over WSDS, OPACs, and local information content. The bento systems partition search results into separate zoned screen displays grouped by content format type and/or local service results. Mandating contribution of theses and dissertations (TDs) to university archives and their electronic equivalents (ETDs) to an institutional repository (IR) is common practice. Optimizing workflows for archival print copies while managing electronic copies in an IR can be challenging given such factors as embargoes and the skill sets required to ensure theses and dissertations are accessible, discoverable, and ultimately safely stashed where they belong. Henderson Library at Georgia Southern University faced these questions and more. As many libraries have done, Henderson Library responded by decreasing monograph acquisitions to allocate additional funds for serial acquisition. Have you purchased e-book or e-journal collections where the metadata was not provided or was incomplete? Can users find all of your collections? If metadata is unavailable, researchers can’t find your materials, resulting in lower usage.

Library directors and electronic resources managers are encouraged to add metadata specialists to their e-resources teams by reassigning catalogers. Catalogers are encouraged to develop skills for cataloging collections, in addition to their skills cataloging individual items.

A discussion of the strategies and outcomes behind a special collections and metadata collaboration effort at the University of Rochester, River Campus Libraries, to make finding aids more discoverable and interoperable. Through the use of a project charter and specific goals, the project managers sought to create buy-in and build a culture of teamwork amongst the participants, resulting in both improved finding aids and a model for collaborative work across departments.

Collaborative Librarianship

This article describes how four librarians contributed to the founding and first-year activities of a multidisciplinary research institute at a regional comprehensive university. The Institute of Cannabis Research (ICR) is the first multidisciplinary research institute on cannabis, an emerging and often controversial field. As faculty representatives on the institute’s steering committee and working groups, librarians were able to leverage interdisciplinary expertise to assist in organizing and disseminating cannabis research. Examples of the reciprocal benefit to both the institution and the library are shared.

The initial impetus for the formation of the task group came from Jay Weitz's request for input from both our groups as he was working on the OCLC-MARC update 2017, particularly in reference to the 23 additions to the Genre/Form Code and Term Source Codes list (http://www.loc.gov/standards/sourcelist/genre-form.html). This request led to the realization that best practices of both groups varied in regard to MARC 344 and 347. It seemed like a good idea to have both groups discuss these same issues together. The Digital Processing Framework suggests a minimum processing standard for digital archival content. The framework brings together archival processing practice with digital preservation activities. Ten practitioners in the field designed this framework to be practical, usable, and adaptable to local institutional settings.
