Textbooks To The Shelf -- Making The Connection Faster, Deana Groves, Nelda Sims, Ellen Micheletti

The Educational Resources Center (ERC) at Western Kentucky University was searching for ways to shorten the processing time for its collection of textbooks for grades K-12. These textbooks are replaced on a regular rotation with new editions as they are published. The collaborative effort between ERC and the Bibliographic Access Unit streamlined the processing and greatly decreased the time between acquisition and availability to library patrons.

The Florida International University Libraries’ Web site’s new look was launched in Fall 2001. As a result of the new look, a group formed to undertake a usability study on the top page of the site. The group tested three target groups to determine the usability of the top page. The study pointed out some revisions for the top page; however, more importantly, it suggested areas for future research.

Connecting users to the best available sources of legal information is one of the traditional functions of the law library. These sources now include Web sites, electronic journals, and subscription databases. This article explores the best way to bring these useful Internet resources to the attention of users, concentrating on the pros and cons of using the catalog or the home page.

This article received the 2004 Law Library Journal Article of the Year Award from the American Association of Law Libraries.

A Metadata Framework Developed At The Tsinghua University Library To Aid In The Preservation Of Digital Resources, Jinfang Niu

This article provides an overview of work completed at Tsinghua University Library in which a metadata framework was developed to aid in the preservation of digital resources. The metadata framework is used for the creation of metadata to describe resources, and includes an encoding standard used to store metadata and resource structures in information systems. The author points out that the Tsinghua University Library metadata framework provides a successful digital preservation solution that may be an appropriate solution for other organizations as well.

A summary note is a brief description of a resource. In most formats, it is an optional note under AACR2, but it becomes especially important when contents cannot be easily examined, as in videos, motion pictures, sound recordings, archival collections, and electronic resources. An abstract is more extensive, and can be a stand-alone source of information about the resource. It is a rich source of keywords for electronic retrieval. The two terms are increasingly used together or interchangeably in guidelines for catalogers for use of the MARC tag 520, and the definitions are sometimes merged to allow for more detail …

As collection development librarians we aim to provide comprehensive information access to our users in order to support their research and curricular needs. For academic libraries, like the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, that support the information needs within a range of subject areas in science and technology, it makes economic sense to attempt to provide this access in discipline-oriented databases. Discipline-oriented databases cover a range of subjects but also provide depth in coverage.
