Characterizing The Northern Hemisphere Circumpolar Vortex Through Space And Time, Nazla Bushra May 2021

Characterizing The Northern Hemisphere Circumpolar Vortex Through Space And Time, Nazla Bushra

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This hemispheric-scale, steering atmospheric circulation represented by the circumpolar vortices (CPVs) are the middle- and upper-tropospheric wind belts circumnavigating the poles. Variability in the CPV area, shape, and position are important topics in geoenvironmental sciences because of the many links to environmental features. However, a means of characterizing the CPV has remained elusive. The goal of this research is to (i) identify the Northern Hemisphere CPV (NHCPV) and its morphometric characteristics, (ii) understand the daily characteristics of NHCPV area and circularity over time, (iii) identify and analyze spatiotemporal variability in the NHCPV’s centroid, and (iv) analyze how CPV features relate …

Species In Vernal Pools: Anova, Lisa Manne May 2021

Species In Vernal Pools: Anova, Lisa Manne

Open Educational Resources

A one-way analysis of variance exercise using data on species diversities from vernal pools.Data are from vernal pools in Willowbrook Park (adjacent to College of Staten Island's campus) in spring.

The typical ANOVA gives a straightforward result (significant anova, easily-interpreted Tukey-Kramer analysis). This data set requires more nuanced interpretation, as the ANOVA is marginally significant, and Tukey-Kramer yields one significant pairwise comparison between groups. Relative lack of variation within groups explains this apparent enigma.

Retail Trading And Stock Volatility: The Case Of Robinhood, Cooper Jones May 2021

Retail Trading And Stock Volatility: The Case Of Robinhood, Cooper Jones

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

We examine the relation between Robinhood usership and stock market volatility. We show that daily fluctuations in Robinhood usership, which is used to proxy retail trading, significantly influence various measures of volatility. These results might suggest that Robinhood users contribute to noise trading as they are generally individuals trading on name recognition, media coverage, popularity, and familiarity of products, rather than on fundamental values. In our empirical approach, we find that the percentage increase in Robinhood usership Granger causes increases in daily stock volatility.

Biases And Blind-Spots In Genome-Wide Crispr-Cas9 Knockout Screens, Merve Dede May 2021

Biases And Blind-Spots In Genome-Wide Crispr-Cas9 Knockout Screens, Merve Dede

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Adaptation of the bacterial CRISPR-Cas9 system to mammalian cells revolutionized the field of functional genomics, enabling genome-scale genetic perturbations to study essential genes, whose loss of function results in a severe fitness defect. There are two types of essential genes in a cell. Core essential genes are absolutely required for growth and proliferation in every cell type. On the other hand, context-dependent essential genes become essential in an environmental or genetic context. The concept of context-dependent gene essentiality is particularly important in cancer, since killing cancer cells selectively without harming surrounding healthy tissue remains a major challenge. The toxicity of …

Understanding The Effect Of Adaptive Mutations On The Three-Dimensional Structure Of Rna, Justin Cook Apr 2021

Understanding The Effect Of Adaptive Mutations On The Three-Dimensional Structure Of Rna, Justin Cook

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are variations in the genome where one base pair can differ between individuals.1 SNPs occur throughout the genome and can correlate to a disease-state if they occur in a functional region of DNA.1According to the central dogma of molecular biology, any variation in the DNA sequence will have a direct effect on the RNA sequence and will potentially alter the identity or conformation of a protein product. A single RNA molecule, due to intramolecular base pairing, can acquire a plethora of 3-D conformations that are described by its structural ensemble. One SNP, rs12477830, which …

Posterior Predictive Critique Of A Psychometric Bayesian Model For Assessing Aphasia, Ashlynn Crisp Apr 2021

Posterior Predictive Critique Of A Psychometric Bayesian Model For Assessing Aphasia, Ashlynn Crisp

Mathematics and Statistics Dissertations, Theses, and Final Project Papers

For persons with aphasia, naming tests are useful for assessing the severity of the disease and observing progress toward recovery. The Philadelphia Naming Test (PNT) is a leading naming test composed of 175 items. The items are common nouns which are one to four syllables in length and with low, medium, and high frequency. Since the target word is known to the administrator, the response from the patient can be classified as correct or an error. If the patient commits an error, the PNT provides procedures for classifying the type of error in the response. Item response theory can be …

A Probabilistic Approach To Identifying Run Scoring Advantage In The Order Of Playing Cricket, Manar D. Samad, Sumen Sen Mar 2021

A Probabilistic Approach To Identifying Run Scoring Advantage In The Order Of Playing Cricket, Manar D. Samad, Sumen Sen

Computer Science Faculty Research

In the game of cricket, the decision to bat first after winning the toss is often taken to make the best use of superior pitch conditions and set a big target for the opponent. However, the opponent may fail to show their natural batting performance in the second innings due to several factors, including deteriorated pitch conditions and excessive pressure of chasing a high target score. The advantage of batting first has been highlighted in the literature and expert opinions. However, the effect of batting and bowling order on match outcome has not been investigated well enough to recommend an …

On The Evolution Equation For Modelling The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jonathan Blackledge Jan 2021

On The Evolution Equation For Modelling The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jonathan Blackledge

Books/Book chapters

The paper introduces and discusses the evolution equation, and, based exclusively on this equation, considers random walk models for the time series available on the daily confirmed Covid-19 cases for different countries. It is shown that a conventional random walk model is not consistent with the current global pandemic time series data, which exhibits non-ergodic properties. A self-affine random walk field model is investigated, derived from the evolutionary equation for a specified memory function which provides the non-ergodic fields evident in the available Covid-19 data. This is based on using a spectral scaling relationship of the type 1/ωα where ω …

Statistical Approaches For Estimation And Comparison Of Brain Functional Connectivity, Jifang Zhao Jan 2021

Statistical Approaches For Estimation And Comparison Of Brain Functional Connectivity, Jifang Zhao

Theses and Dissertations

Drug addiction can lead to many health-related problems and social concerns. Functional connectivity obtained from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data promotes a variety of fundamental understandings in such association. Due to its complex correlation structure and large dimensionality, the modeling and analysis of the functional connectivity from neuroimage are challenging. By proposing a spatio-temporal model for multi-subject neuroimage data, we incorporate voxel-level spatio-temporal dependencies of whole-brain measurements to improve the accuracy of statistical inference. To tackle large-scale spatio-temporal neuroimage data, we develop a computationally efficient algorithm to estimate the parameters. Our method is used to identify functional connectivity and …

This dissertation focuses on these two tools and it is composed of three projects. In the first project, we introduce a new SDR method through a novel approach of feature filter to recover the central mean subspace exhaustively along with a method to determine the dimension, two variable selection methods, and extensions to multivariate response and large p …

Novel Methods For Characterizing Conditional Quantiles In Zero-Inflated Count Regression Models, Xuan Shi Jan 2021

Novel Methods For Characterizing Conditional Quantiles In Zero-Inflated Count Regression Models, Xuan Shi

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

Despite its popularity in diverse disciplines, quantile regression methods are primarily designed for the continuous response setting and cannot be directly applied to the discrete (or count) response setting. There can also be challenges when modeling count responses, such as the presence of excess zero counts, formally known as zero-inflation. To address the aforementioned challenges, we propose a comprehensive model-aware strategy that synthesizes quantile regression methods with estimation of zero-inflated count regression models. Various competing computational routines are examined, while residual analysis and model selection procedures are included to validate our method. The performance of these methods is characterized through …

Estimating And Testing Treatment Effects With Misclassified Multivariate Data, Zi Ye Jan 2021

Estimating And Testing Treatment Effects With Misclassified Multivariate Data, Zi Ye

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

Clinical trials are often used to assess drug efficacy and safety. Participants are sometimes pre-stratified into different groups by diagnostic tools. However, these diagnostic tools are fallible. The traditional method ignores this problem and assumes the diagnostic devices are perfect. This assumption will lead to inefficient and biased estimators. In this era of personalized medicine and measurement-based care, the issues of bias and efficiency are of paramount importance. Despite the prominence, only few researches evaluated the treatment effect in the presence of misclassifications in some special cases and most others focus on assessing the accuracy of the diagnostic devices. In …

Information Prioritization: A Comparison Between Utility Maximizers And Probability Matchers, Yusuf Ismaeel Jan 2021

Information Prioritization: A Comparison Between Utility Maximizers And Probability Matchers, Yusuf Ismaeel

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis examines the differences between probability matchers and utility maximizers in their preferences for information sources in a lab environment. In this paper, we consider the best source of information to be the most connected one. We conducted several linear probability model type regressions along with logit regressions. Furthermore, we also attempted to control and fix any potential misclassifications in classifying the cognitive strategy by using instrumental variables. The results show that utility maximizers will almost always choose the most informed node. Probability matchers, on the other hand, do not exhibit such a behavior as the probability matching strategy …
