The Climate of Environmental Justice: Taking Stock (March 16-17)
On March 16-17, The Climate of Environmental Justice: Taking Stock conference gathered 125 academics and practitioners from around the country to consider the pressing issues facing low-income and/or communities of color that continue to be subjected to a disproportionate share of environmental maladies.
"Some people are more equal than others when it comes to bracing ourselves for the impacts of climate change," said conference organizer Professor Maxine Burkett. "Whether it's because poor folks lived in the lowest areas of New Orleans when Katrina floodwaters rushed in, or are less able to afford the cooling bill during increasingly frequent heat waves, …

The present report outlines the results of an integrated mapping project undertaken to provide habitat maps of the shallow Palm Beach County seafloor between the 6m and 35m contours. This study is a continuation of a similar mapping study undertaken in Broward County, and results were produced such that a seamless and fully compatible mapping product is now available for both counties. The study area stretched from 26.4429o (E. Linton Blvd) in the south to 26.9590o (Jupiter Inlet) in the north. Compatibility with other, in particular NOAA, mapping products was also assured. Data types used in this mapping effort included …
Assessment Of The Impact Of Various Ionospheric Models On High Frequency Signal Raytracing, Joshua T. Werner
Assessment Of The Impact Of Various Ionospheric Models On High Frequency Signal Raytracing, Joshua T. Werner
Theses and Dissertations
An assessment of the impact of various ionospheric models on high-frequency (HF) signal raytracing is presented. Ionospheric refraction can strongly affect the propagation of HF signals. Consequently, Department of Defense missions such as over-the-horizon RADAR, HF communications, and geo-location all depend on an accurate specification of the ionosphere. Five case studies explore ionospheric conditions ranging from quiet conditions to solar flares and geomagnetic storms. It is shown that an E layer by itself can increase an HF signal’s ground range by over 100 km, stressing the importance of accurately specifying the lower ionosphere. It is also shown that the GPSII …
Anisotropy In The South Atlantic Anomaly, Shaun M. Easley
Anisotropy In The South Atlantic Anomaly, Shaun M. Easley
Theses and Dissertations
From June 2000 through July 2006, the TSX-5 satellite measured proton fluxes in the Earth’s magnetosphere using its CEASE instrument. A review of the satellite data by scientists at AFRL/VSBX revealed an unanticipated, recurring bi-modal structure in histograms of the proton counts. This research identified the bi-modal behavior as anisotropic in nature, and the result of two separate processes. At low altitudes the anisotropy was well described by the classic “East-West Effect.” Comparisons of the satellite data to simple analytical models are presented. At high altitudes, the anisotropy was the result of the detector measuring protons at different pitch angles …

Assessment Of Optical Turbulence Profiles Derived From Probabilistic Climatology, Brett W. Wisdom
Theses and Dissertations
This research effort assesses the performance of the High Energy Laser End-to-End Operational Simulation (HELEEOS) Climatological C2n optical turbulence model. Path-integrated C2n values of two HELEEOS optical turbulence pro les at 3 distinct operational altitudes are compared to values determined from measured thermosonde data. HELEEOS desert and mid-latitude sites are selected from the Extreme and Percentile Environmental Reference Tables (ExPERT) database for comparison to the thermosonde data. Statistical equivalence of the two datasets is determined through a Design of Experiments (DOE) factorial test to within 80% confidence. The HELEEOS profiles are shown to be equivalent to …

Investigating Coastal Processes And Nitrate Levels In The Elkhorn Slough Using Real-Time Data, Lisa G. Adams, George I. Matsumoto
Faculty Articles
The primary objective of this activity is to predict how coastal processes, such as tides, affect salinity, temperature, and nitrate levels in a type of estuary, called a slough. Real-time data from the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve in Monterey, California, will be used to test predictions. In addition to collecting, graphing, and interpreting real-time data, students will learn how nitrates enter the estuary, and they will gain a better understanding of the interconnectedness of all bodies of water, especially estuaries.

Modeling, Simulation, And Estimation Of Optical Turbulence, Byron P. Formwalt
Modeling, Simulation, And Estimation Of Optical Turbulence, Byron P. Formwalt
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation documents three new contributions to simulation and modeling of optical turbulence. The first contribution is the formalization, optimization, and validation of a modeling technique called successively conditioned rendering (SCR). The SCR technique is empirically validated by comparing the statistical error of random phase screens generated with the technique. The second contribution is the derivation of the covariance delineation theorem, which provides theoretical bounds on the error associated with SCR. It is shown empirically that the theoretical bound may be used to predict relative algorithm performance. Therefore, the covariance delineation theorem is a powerful tool for optimizing SCR algorithms. …

Wave Propagation At The Interface Of A Two-Layer Fluid System In The Laboratory, Chen-Yuan Chen, John Rong-Chung Hsu, Cheng-Wu Chen, Ching-Feng Kuo, Hsin-Hsun Chen, Min-Hung Cheng
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
A series of laboratory experiments on internal solitary wave (ISW) had been conducted in a two-layer fluid system. Internal solitary waves were generated in laboratory which was controlled by several variables, including different layer thickness ratios H1/H2, interface differences ηo, and the density ratios ρ1/ρ2. The wave flume used in this experiment was 12 meter long with a cross-section 0.5 m wide by 0.7m in height. Five ultrasonic probes placed at equidistance recorded the interface fluctuations, and one density probe measured the change of density across the interface. Data collection and processing were carried out via control software. This paper …

Generation Of Internal Solitary Wave By Gravity Collapse, Chen-Yuan Chen, John Rong-Chung Hsu, Cheng-Wu Chen, Hsin-Hsun Chen, Ching-Feng Kuo, Min-Hung Cheng
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the generation of an internal solitary wave (ISW) in a two-layer free surface fluid system in wave flume (12 m × 0.5 m × 0.7 m), which included wave channel and compartment. There is filled with stratified twolayer fluid system in the channel and small compartment, respectively. These two regions in the wave flume are separated by a movable vertical gate at one end of the flume for generating the ISW (internal solitary wave). An ISW generation is thus caused by gravity collapse upon raising the vertical gate. Given positive potential energies, an elevation-type …

Estimation Of Dry Deposition Of Atmospheric Mercury In Nevada By Direct And Indirect Methods, Seth N. Lyman, Mae Sexauer Gustin, Eric M. Prestbo, Frank J. Marsik
USU Uintah Basin Faculty Publications
Atmospheric models and limited measurements indicate that dry deposition of atmospheric mercury is an important process by which mercury is input to ecosystems. To begin to fill the measurement data gap, multiple methods were used simultaneously during seasonal campaigns conducted in 2005 and 2006 to estimate dry deposition of atmospheric mercury at two Mercury Deposition Network (MDN) sites in rural Nevada and in Reno, Nevada. Gaseous elemental mercury (Hg0), reactive gaseous mercury (RGM), and particulate-bound mercury (Hgp) concentrations were measured using Tekran 2537A/1130/1135 systems. These speciated measurements were combined with on-site meteorological measurements to estimate depositional fluxes of RGM and …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
The yellow stingray, Urobatis jamaicensis is the most common elasmobranch observed among the coral reefs and associated habitats of Southeast Florida, U.S.A. In coastal waters off Broward County, Florida, gravid females were observed throughout the year. Urobatis jamaicensis is an aplacental viviparous species with evidence of a short gestation period (five to six months). Vitellogenesis occurs concurrently with gestation, with the females having both term fetuses and mature ova simultaneously. It is likely that the females have a bi-annual reproductive cycle where each female is capable of producing two broods annually. The ovulation period in the spring/summer reproductive cycle ranged …

Time-Resolved Ducting Of Atmospheric Acoustic-Gravity Waves By Analysis Of The Vertical Energy Flux, Yonghui Yu, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D.
Publications
A new 2-D time-dependent model is used to simulate the propagation of an acoustic-gravity wave packet in the atmosphere. A Gaussian tropospheric heat source is assumed with a forcing period of 6.276 minutes. The atmospheric thermal structure creates three discrete wave ducts in the stratosphere, mesosphere, and lower thermosphere, respectively. The horizontally averaged vertical energy flux is derived over altitude and time in order to examine the time-resolved ducting. This ducting is characterized by alternating upward and downward energy fluxes within a particular duct, which clearly show the reflections occurring from the duct boundaries. These ducting simulations are the first …

Aerosol Major Ion Record At Mount Washington, E V. Fischer, L D. Ziemba, R. Talbot, Jack E. Dibb, Robert J. Griffin, L Husain, A N. Grant
Earth Sciences
This study examined the seasonal cycles and regional-scale meteorological controls on the chemical properties of bulk aerosols collected from 1999 to 2004 at Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeastern United States. The concentrations of NH4+ and SO42− peaked during summer months. The pattern for aerosol NO3− was more complicated with relatively high median concentrations characterizing spring and summer months, but with major elevated events occurring during fall, winter, and spring. The seasonal relationship between NH4+ and SO42− indicated that during warmer months a mixture of (NH4) …
