Relation Algebras As Expanded Fl-Algebras, Nikolaos Galatos, Peter Jipsen

This paper studies generalizations of relation algebras to residuated lattices with a unary De Morgan operation. Several new examples of such algebras are presented, and it is shown that many basic results on relation algebras hold in this wider setting. The variety qRA of quasi relation algebras is defined and shown to be a conservative expansion of involutive FL-algebras. Our main result is that equations in qRA and several of its subvarieties can be decided by a Gentzen system, and that these varieties are generated by their finite members.

A cohomology theory for multiplications and comultiplications of Frobenius algebras is developed in low dimensions in analogy with Hochschild cohomology of bialgebras based on deformation theory. Concrete computations are provided for key examples. Skein theoretic constructions give rise to solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation using multiplications and comultiplications of Frobenius algebras, and 2-cocycles are used to obtain deformations of R-matrices thus obtained.

Given a Gaussian stationary increment processes, we show that a Skorokhod-Hitsuda stochastic integral with respect to this process, which obeys the Wick-Itô calculus rules, can be naturally defined using ideas taken from Hida’s white noise space theory. We use the Bochner-Minlos theorem to associate a probability space to the process, and define the counterpart of the S-transform in this space. We then use this transform to define the stochastic integral and prove an associated Itô formula.

In this paper, we introduce a non-commutative space of stochastic distributions, which contains the non-commutative white noise space, and forms, together with a natural multiplication, a topological algebra. Special inequalities which hold in this space allow to characterize its invertible elements and to develop an appropriate framework of non-commutative stochastic linear systems.

We introduce connections between the Cuntz relations and the Hardy space H2 of the open unit disk D. We then use them to solve a new kind of multipoint interpolation problem in H2, where for instance, only a linear combination of the values of a function at given points is preassigned, rather than the values at the points themselves.

We develop the mathematical theory of epistemic updates with the tools of duality theory. We focus on the Logic of Epistemic Actions and Knowledge (EAK), introduced by Baltag-Moss-Solecki, without the common knowledge operator. We dually characterize the product update construction of EAK as a certain construction transforming the complex algebras associated with the given model into the complex algebra associated with the updated model. This dual characterization naturally generalizes to much wider classes of algebras, which include, but are not limited to, arbitrary BAOs and arbitrary modal expansions of Heyting algebras (HAOs). "Dynamic Logics (DLs) form a large family of nonclassical logics, and perhaps the one enjoying the widest range of applications. Indeed, they are designed to formalize change caused by actions of diverse nature: updates on the memory state of a computer, displacements of moving robots in an environment, measurements in models of quantum physics, belief revisions, knowledge updates, etc. In each of these areas, DL-formulas express properties of the model encoding the present state of affairs, as well as the pre- and post-conditions of a given action. We propose regular expressions to abstractly model and study properties of resource-aware computations. Inspired by nominal techniques – as those popular in process calculi – we extend classical regular expressions with names (to model computational resources) and suitable operators (for allocation, deallocation, scoping of, and freshness conditions on resources). We discuss classes of such nominal regular expressions, show how such expressions have natural interpretations in terms of languages over infinite alphabets, and give Kleene theorems to characterise their formal languages in terms of nominal automata.

In this thesis, we present a new Feasible Interior-Point Method (IPM) for Linear Complementarity Problem (LPC) over Symmetric Cones. The advantage of this method lies in that it uses full Newton-steps, thus, avoiding the calculation of the step size at each iteration. By suitable choice of parameters we prove the global convergence of iterates which always stay in the the central path neighborhood. A global convergence of the method is proved and an upper bound for the number of iterations necessary to find ε-approximate solution of the problem is presented.

Singular values have been found to be useful in the theory of unitarily invariant norms, as well as many modern computational algorithms. In examining singular value inequalities, it can be seen how these can be related to eigenvalues and how several algebraic inequalities can be preserved and written in an analogous singular value form. We examine the fundamental building blocks to the modern theory of singular value inequalities, such as positive matrices, matrix norms, block matrices, and singular value decomposition, then use these to examine new techniques being used to prove singular value inequalities, and also look at existing conjectures.

This paper proposed two new and simple solution methods to solve a fuzzy system of linear equations having fuzzy coefficients and crisp variables using a polynomial parametric form of fuzzy numbers. Related theorems are stated and proved. The proposed methods are used to solve example problems. The results obtained are also compared with the known solutions and are found to be in good agreement.

Linear systems arise frequently in scientific and engineering computing. Various serial and parallel algorithms have been introduced for their solution. This paper seeks to compute the WZ and the ZW factorizations of a nonsingular matrix A using the right inverse of nested submatrices of A. We introduce two new matrix factorizations, the QZ and the QW factorizations, and compute the factorizations using our proposed approach.

This descriptive study focuses on the approaches college students (ages 20 -24) use when solving systems of linear equations problems that have multiple choice answers. Participants were from a midsize public university in the northeast. Four approaches were considered – three forwards approaches: 1) substitution, 2) elimination, and 3) graphing, and one backwards approach: plugging in the x and y values from each multiple choice option. Participants solved systems of linear equations problems and answered questions based on their methods in a structured clinical interview. Each participant also filled out a questionnaire. This study examined the current research that exists on Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) and how it would look when implemented into an 8th grade mathematics classroom. Additional questions examined are if CGI would develop strong student understanding between mathematical concepts and their real world applications; if CGI techniques and questioning impact the interest level of mathematics students; and what type of extra resources would be needed by teachers to implement Cognitively Guided Instruction into their curriculum. Rings graded by Z and Zd play a central role in algebraic geometry and commutative algebra, and the purpose of this thesis is to consider rings graded by any abelian group. A commutative ring is graded by an abelian group if the ring has a direct sum decomposition by additive subgroups of the ring indexed over the group, with the additional condition that multiplication in the ring is compatible with the group operation. Representational fluency (RF) includes an ability to interpret, create, move within and among, and connect tool-based representations of mathematical objects. Taken as an indicator of conceptual understanding, there is a need to better support school algebra students’ RF in learning environments that utilize both computer algebra systems (CAS) and paper-and-pencil. The purpose of this research was to: (a) characterize change in ninth-grade algebra students’ RF in solving problems involving linear equations, and (b) determine conditions of a CAS and paper-and-pencil learning environment in which those students changed their RF.

A 4-point nonlinear corner-cutting subdivision scheme is established. It is induced from a special C-shaped biarc circular spline structure. The scheme is circular-invariant and can be effectively applied to 2-dimensional (2D) data sets that are locally convex. The scheme is also extended adaptively to non-convex data. In this paper we propose a new method to forecast enrollments based on fuzzy time series. The proposed method belongs to the first order and time-variant methods. Historical enrollments of the University of Alabama from year 1948 to 2009 are used in this study to illustrate the forecasting process. By comparing the proposed method with other methods we will show that the proposed method has a higher accuracy rate for forecasting enrollments than the existing methods.

In this paper, the set of all probability functions on L* is studied, where L* is the lattice of bothvalued fuzzy sets or intuitionistic fuzzy sets. It is shown that the set of all probability functions on L* endowed with two appropriate operations has a monoid structure which is also a distributive complete lattice. Also the lattice structure of the set of all probability functions on L* induced by an appropriate function on [0, 1] to itself is studied. Some lattice (dual) isomorphisms are discussed that suggests probabilities on L* could be considered in the framework of theories modeling imprecision.

The purpose of this study was to study the effects of goal setting on students in a developmental algebra course. This study examined the effects on test scores for students that were prescribed a test score goal, students that created their own test score goal, and then compared to a control group. Three classes of developmental algebra were chosen with a total of 25 participants with reported results. Results showed that students with a goal on a test did not score significantly better than students without a goal, but did score significantly better on a test after the goal than …

We introduce an associative algebra RBk(x) that has a basis of rook-Brauer diagrams. These diagrams correspond to partial matchings on 2k vertices. The rook-Brauer algebra contains the group algebra of the symmetric group, the Brauer algebra, and the rook monoid algebra as subalgebras. We consider the period of a Fibonacci sequence modulo a prime and provide an accessible, motivated treatment of this classical topic using only ideas from linear and abstract algebra. Our methods extend to general recurrences with prime moduli and provide some new insights. And our treatment highlights a nice application of the use of splitting fields that might be suitable to present in an undergraduate course in abstract algebra or Galois theory.

Unlike Toeplitz operators on H², truncated Toeplitz operators do not have a natural matricial characterization. Consequently, these operators are difficult to study numerically. In this paper we provide criteria for a matrix with distinct eigenvalues to be unitarily equivalent to a truncated Toeplitz operator having an analytic symbol. This test is constructive, and we illustrate it with several examples. As a byproduct, we also prove that every complex symmetric operator on a Hilbert space of dimension ≤ 3 is unitarily equivalent to a direct sum of truncated Toeplitz operators.
