The discrimination of texture features in an image has many important applications: from detection of man-made objects from a surrounding natural background to identification of cancerous from healthy tissue in X-ray imagery. The fractal structure in an image has been used with success to identify these features but requires unacceptable processing time if executed sequentially.

The paradigm of data parallelism is presented as the best method for applying massively parallel processing to the computation of fractal dimension of an image. With this methodology, and sufficient numbers of processors, this computation can reach real time speeds necessary for many applications. A …

To achieve reduced training time and improved generalization with artificial neural networks (ANN, or NN), it is important to use a reduced complexity NN structure. A "problem" is defined by constraints among the variables describing it. If knowledge about these constraints could be obtained a priori, this could be used to reduce the complexity of the ANN before training it. Systems theory literature contains methods for determining and representing structural aspects of constrained data (these methods are herein called GSM, general systems method). The Synthesis kernel [21,22,23,27,28] showed that dynamic code generation, software feedback, and fine-grain modular kernel organization are useful implementation techniques for improving the performance of operating system kernels. In addition, and perhaps more importantly, we discovered that there are strong interactions between the techniques. Hence, a careful and systematic combination of the techniques can be very powerful even though each one by itself may have serious limitations. By identifying these interactions we illustrate the problems of applying each technique in isolation to existing kernels. This thesis assesses the feasibility of utilizing a hypercube interconnect topology to link a heterogeneous processor array in a very long instruction word (VLIW) computer architecture. The research focused upon the selection of a suitable arrangement of processors for the computer and the subsequent demonstration of the architecture's capability to handle simple loop iterations. Previous attempts at VLIW computer design are summarized, the new SMIMD architecture is presented, and suggestions for future research are given. The thesis concludes with results of the initial performance evaluations of the architecture design.

It has been asserted that the most significant gains in software productivity will come from increased levels of software reuse. Some economic models for predicting savings through software reuse exist, but none are based on actual project experience. This paper surveys those models and presents the results of a case study, the Restructured Naval Tactical Data Systems (RNTDS) architecture, in the light of those models. According to the models, software reuse via the RNTDS architecture has enabled the production of fourteen major computer programs at five to twenty-one percent of the cost to create them without software reuse. Applications with Constrained Latency Storage Access (CLSA) are those that have large storage needs and hard constraints on the amount of latency they can tolerate. Such applications present a problem when the storage technology that is cost effective and large enough cannot meet their latency constraints for demand fetching. Examples are found in the developing field of multimedia computing and, to a lesser extent, in real-time database literature. This paper examines the nature of timing constraints at the application-storage interface and defines a classification for both the synchronization constraints of the application and the latency characteristics of the storage system. …

ATAMM is capable of modeling the execution of large-grained algorithms on distributed data flow architectures. This document constitutes the final deliverable for the research project titled “An Investigation of Selected Issues in Transaction Mechanism Design for Object Oriented Databases.” The document describes our ideas for extending the traditional transaction concept for use in object oriented databases, and concentrates specifically on providing an underlying model to support the concurrency control and version management aspects of the problem. The ideas presented here are not however restricted to the domain of object oriented databases. They are more generally applicable to database systems that require flexibility in their versioning and concurrency control policies.

In this thesis a parallel algorithm for determining the zeros of any given analytic function is described. Parallelism is achieved by modifying the traditional bisection algorithm for architecture machines.

Given any user supplied function f(X), continuous on the interval Ao ≤ x ≤ B0, and the tolerance of accuracy an algorithm of determining up to ten roots, with error of approximation less than or equal to tolerance, on parallel systems like Distributed Array Processor (OAP) and N-cube is considered.

Diagnostics software for analyzing ATAMM based concurrent processing systems is presented in this thesis. ATAMM (Algorithm to Architecture Mapping Model) is a new model developed by researchers at Old Dominion University and the NASA-Langley Research Center. ATAMM is capable of modeling the execution of large grain algorithms on distributed data flow architectures. Investigating a real or simulated ATAMM based system requires the aid of software tools. The diversity in parallel architectures and the programming styles induced thereof, make benchmarking of parallel machines a hard problem. Current benchmarking techniques are limited in applicability due to the issues of portability. We present a different approach to benchmarking parallel machines, which would make the resulting benchmarks portable, easy to use and widely applicable. The development and use of software tools for performance evaluation of concurrent processing is presented in this thesis. The particular concurrent processing architecture proposed by Stoughton and Mielke is investigated. The modelling of this architecture is based on Petri net theory and it can be studied making use of circuit theory. Computation of lower bounds for Time Between Outputs (TBO) and Time Between Input and Output (TBIO) can be accomplished by using principles of circuit theory, among others. Fat-trees are a class of routing networks for hardware-efficient parallel computation. This paper presents a randomized algorithm for routing messages on a fat-tree. The quality of the algorithm is measured in terms of the load factor of a set of messages to be routed, which is a lower bound on the time required to deliver the messages. A computer-aided design approach for the simplification of analog computer simulation is presented. The simulation configuration consists of an EAI 2000 analog computer with serial communications link to a PDP — 11/24 digital computer. Under control of the PDP-11, the analog simulations are realized with appropriate time and magnitude scaling which adjusts the range of the simulation coefficients and prevents overloads of the analog components. The analog computer hardware configuration accommodates both stable plants up to eighth order and closed-loop systems up to tenth order. Cascade compensation is provided for the closed-loop systems.

In order to overcome the difficulties encountered in closed form solutions, moment-curvature-thrust relationships are developed for hybrid and nonhybrid cross sections utilizing an open form method. The use of horizontal sectors permits the inclusion of residual stresses and/or nonbilinear stress-strain relationships, if desired. Theoretical and experimental data are compared. Applications to circular tubes and other cross sections are discussed. Results indicate that open form solutions are feasible for calculating moment-curvature-thrust data. Hybrid cross sections are easily treated by open form solutions.
