Proactive And Reactive Resource/Task Allocation For Agent Teams In Uncertain Environments, Pritee Agrawal Aug 2018

Proactive And Reactive Resource/Task Allocation For Agent Teams In Uncertain Environments, Pritee Agrawal

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Synergistic interactions between task/resource allocation and multi-agent coordinated planning/assignment exist in many problem domains such as trans- portation and logistics, disaster rescue, security patrolling, sensor networks, power distribution networks, etc. These domains often feature dynamic environments where allocations of tasks/resources may have complex dependencies and agents may leave the team due to unforeseen conditions (e.g., emergency, accident or violation, damage to agent, reconfiguration of environment).

Reconstructability And Dynamics Of Elementary Cellular Automata, Martin Zwick Jul 2018

Reconstructability And Dynamics Of Elementary Cellular Automata, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Reconstructability analysis (RA) is a method to determine whether a multivariate relation, defined set- or information-theoretically, is decomposable with or without loss into lower ordinality relations. Set-theoretic RA (SRA) is used to characterize the mappings of elementary cellular automata. The decomposition possible for each mapping w/o loss is a better predictor than the λ parameter (Walker & Ashby, Langton) of chaos, & non-decomposable mappings tend to produce chaos. SRA yields not only the simplest lossless structure but also a vector of losses for all structures, indexed by parameter τ. These losses are analogous to transmissions in information-theoretic RA (IRA). IRA …

Introduction To Reconstructability Analysis, Martin Zwick Jul 2018

Introduction To Reconstructability Analysis, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

This talk will introduce Reconstructability Analysis (RA), a data modeling methodology deriving from the 1960s work of Ross Ashby and developed in the systems community in the 1980s and afterwards. RA, based on information theory and graph theory, is a member of the family of methods known as ‘graphical models,’ which also include Bayesian networks and log-linear techniques. It is designed for exploratory modeling, although it can also be used for confirmatory hypothesis testing. RA can discover high ordinality and nonlinear interactions that are not hypothesized in advance. Its conceptual framework illuminates the relationships between wholes and parts, a subject …

Preliminary Results Of Bayesian Networks And Reconstructability Analysis Applied To The Electric Grid, Marcus Harris, Martin Zwick Jul 2018

Preliminary Results Of Bayesian Networks And Reconstructability Analysis Applied To The Electric Grid, Marcus Harris, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Reconstructability Analysis (RA) is an analytical approach developed in the systems community that combines graph theory and information theory. Graph theory provides the structure of relations (model of the data) between variables and information theory characterizes the strength and the nature of the relations. RA has three primary approaches to model data: variable based (VB) models without loops (acyclic graphs), VB models with loops (cyclic graphs) and state-based models (nearly always cyclic, individual states specifying model constraints). These models can either be directed or neutral. Directed models focus on a single response variable whereas neutral models focus on all relations …

Beyond Spatial Autocorrelation: A Novel Approach Using Reconstructability Analysis, David Percy, Martin Zwick Jul 2018

Beyond Spatial Autocorrelation: A Novel Approach Using Reconstructability Analysis, David Percy, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Raster data are digital representations of spatial phenomena that are organized into rows and columns that typically have the same dimensions in each direction. They are used to represent image data at any scale. Common raster data are medical images, satellite data, and photos generated by modern smartphones.
Satellites capture reflectance data in specific bands of wavelength that correspond to red, green, blue, and often some infrared and thermal bands. These composite vectors can then be classified into actual land use categories such as forest or water using automated techniques. These classifications are verified on the ground using hand-held sensors. …

A Framework For Executable Systems Modeling, Matthew Amissah Jul 2018

A Framework For Executable Systems Modeling, Matthew Amissah

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Systems Modeling Language (SysML), like its parent language, the Unified Modeling Language (UML), consists of a number of independently derived model languages (i.e. state charts, activity models etc.) which have been co-opted into a single modeling framework. This, together with the lack of an overarching meta-model that supports uniform semantics across the various diagram types, has resulted in a large unwieldy and informal language schema. Additionally, SysML does not offer a built in framework for managing time and the scheduling of time based events in a simulation.

In response to these challenges, a number of auxiliary standards have been offered …

Cybersecurity Architectural Analysis For Complex Cyber-Physical Systems, Martin Trae Span Iii, Logan O. Mailloux, Michael R. Grimaila Jul 2018

Cybersecurity Architectural Analysis For Complex Cyber-Physical Systems, Martin Trae Span Iii, Logan O. Mailloux, Michael R. Grimaila

Faculty Publications

In the modern military’s highly interconnected and technology-reliant operational environment, cybersecurity is rapidly growing in importance. Moreover, as a number of highly publicized attacks have occurred against complex cyber-physical systems such as automobiles and airplanes, cybersecurity is no longer limited to traditional computer systems and IT networks. While architectural analysis approaches are critical to improving cybersecurity, these approaches are often poorly understood and applied in ad hoc fashion. This work addresses these gaps by answering the questions: 1. “What is cybersecurity architectural analysis?” and 2. “How can architectural analysis be used to more effectively support cybersecurity decision making for complex …

Compiler Optimization Effects On Register Collisions, Jonathan S. Tan Jun 2018

Compiler Optimization Effects On Register Collisions, Jonathan S. Tan

Master's Theses

We often want a compiler to generate executable code that runs as fast as possible. One consideration toward this goal is to keep values in fast registers to limit the number of slower memory accesses that occur. When there are not enough physical registers available for use, values are ``spilled'' to the runtime stack. The need for spills is discovered during register allocation wherein values in use are mapped to physical registers. One factor in the efficacy of register allocation is the number of values in use at one time (register collisions). Register collision is affected by compiler optimizations that …

The source code for the project is at https://github.com/josepharhar/jos.

Fimce: A Fully Isolated Micro-Computing Environment For Multicore Systems, Siqi Zhao, Xuhua Ding Jun 2018

Fimce: A Fully Isolated Micro-Computing Environment For Multicore Systems, Siqi Zhao, Xuhua Ding

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Virtualization-based memory isolation has been widely used as a security primitive in various security systems to counter kernel-level attacks. In this article, our in-depth analysis on this primitive shows that its security is significantly undermined in the multicore setting when other hardware resources for computing are not enclosed within the isolation boundary. We thus propose to construct a fully isolated micro-computing environment (FIMCE) as a new primitive. By virtue of its architectural niche, FIMCE not only offers stronger security assurance than its predecessor, but also features a flexible and composable environment with support for peripheral device isolation, thus greatly expanding …

Towards Mitigating Co-Incident Peak Power Consumption And Managing Energy Utilization In Heterogeneous Clusters, Renan Delvalle Rueda

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

As data centers continue to grow in scale, the resource management software needs to work closely with the hardware infrastructure to provide high utilization, performance, fault tolerance, and high availability. Apache Mesos has emerged as a leader in this space, providing an abstraction over the entire cluster, data center, or cloud to present a uniform view of all the resources. In addition, frameworks built on Mesos such as Apache Aurora, developed within Twitter and later contributed to the Apache Software Foundation, allow massive job submissions with heterogeneous resource requirements. The availability of such tools in the Open Source space, with …

Blockchain: The Backbone Of Supply Chains In Omni-Channels, Yejin Lee

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

From the financial industry to the healthcare industry, many use cases for blockchain have been explored and adopted. However, unlike most industries, the retail industry has yet to fully explore blockchain’s capabilities, for the industry’s priority is in improving its practices first. One of its practices in the works is omni-channels, which face struggles of its own, that oftentimes result from supply chain inefficiencies. This paper will utilize already explored blockchain potentials as a guide to explore and introduce new potentials in blockchain for supply chain in omni-channels.

Blockchain In Payment Card Systems, Darlene Godfrey-Welch, Remy Lagrois, Jared Law, Russell Scott Anderwald, Daniel W. Engels

SMU Data Science Review

Payment cards (e.g., credit and debit cards) are the most frequent form of payment in use today. A payment card transaction entails many verification information exchanges between the cardholder, merchant, issuing bank, a merchant bank, and third-party payment card processors. Today, a record of the payment transaction often records to multiple ledgers. Merchant’s incur fees for both accepting and processing payment cards. The payment card industry is in dire need of technology which removes the need for third-party verification and records transaction details to a single tamper-resistant digital ledger. The private blockchain is that technology. Private blockchain provides a linked …

Making Scientific Applications Portable: Software Containers And Package Managers, Curtis Noecker Apr 2018

Making Scientific Applications Portable: Software Containers And Package Managers, Curtis Noecker

All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019

Scientific workflows for high-performance computing (HPC) are becoming increasingly complex. Developing a way to simplify these workflows could save many hours for both HPC users and developers, potentially eliminating any time spent managing software dependencies and experiment set-up. To accomplish this, we propose using two programs together: Docker and Spack. Docker is a container platform and Spack is a package manager designed specifically for HPC. In this paper, we show how Docker and Spack can be used to containerize the extreme-scale Scientific Software Development Kit (xSDK). Doing this makes the xSDK far more accessible to non-computer scientists and lowers time …

Combined Classifier For Cross-Project Defect Prediction: An Extended Empirical Study, Yun Zhang, David Lo, Xin Xia, Jianling Sun Apr 2018

Combined Classifier For Cross-Project Defect Prediction: An Extended Empirical Study, Yun Zhang, David Lo, Xin Xia, Jianling Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To facilitate developers in effective allocation of their testing and debugging efforts, many software defect prediction techniques have been proposed in the literature. These techniques can be used to predict classes that are more likely to be buggy based on the past history of classes, methods, or certain other code elements. These techniques are effective provided that a sufficient amount of data is available to train a prediction model. However, sufficient training data are rarely available for new software projects. To resolve this problem, cross-project defect prediction, which transfers a prediction model trained using data from one project to another, …

Outlier Classification Criterion For Multivariate Cyber Anomaly Detection, Alexander M. Trigo

Theses and Dissertations

Every day, intrusion detection systems catalogue millions of unsupervised data entries. This represents a “big data” problem for research sponsors within the Department of Defense. In a first response to this issue, raw data capture was transformed into usable vectors and an array of multivariate techniques implemented to detect potential outliers. This research expands and refines these techniques by implementing a Chi-Square Q-Q plot-based classification criteria for outlier detection. This methodology has been implemented into an R-based programming solution that allows for a refined and semi-automated user experience for intelligence analysts. Moreover, two case analyses are performed that illustrate how …

Statistical Analysis Of Network Change, Teresa D. Schmidt, Martin Zwick Feb 2018

Statistical Analysis Of Network Change, Teresa D. Schmidt, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Networks are rarely subjected to hypothesis tests for difference, but when they are inferred from datasets of independent observations statistical testing is feasible. To demonstrate, a healthcare provider network is tested for significant change after an intervention using Medicaid claims data. First, the network is inferred for each time period with (1) partial least squares (PLS) regression and (2) reconstructability analysis (RA). Second, network distance (i.e., change between time periods) is measured as the mean absolute difference in (1) coefficient matrices for PLS and (2) calculated probability distributions for RA. Third, the network distance is compared against a reference distribution …

How Do Topological Properties Of Ripple-Carry Adders Affect Time Delay?, Alexander Boukal Jan 2018

How Do Topological Properties Of Ripple-Carry Adders Affect Time Delay?, Alexander Boukal

All Zyzzogeton Presentations

This poster presents topological properties of N-bit ripple-carry adders and the effects of their topology, specifically their genus, on the speed of current flow. An adder is a very simple computer that takes input numbers (0 and 1) from logic gates and then adds them together. To create a ripple-carry adder, we take N number of adder circuits and arrange them in parallel. We differentiate between two kinds of adder circuits: half adders and full adders. Half adders are non-planar (has loops) circuits with genus = 1 that let us perform elementary addition operations using logic gates. Full adder circuits …

Modeling Data Center Co-Tenancy Performance Interference, Wei Kuang Jan 2018

Modeling Data Center Co-Tenancy Performance Interference, Wei Kuang

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

A multi-core machine allows executing several applications simultaneously. Those jobs are scheduled on different cores and compete for shared resources such as the last level cache and memory bandwidth. Such competitions might cause performance degradation. Data centers often utilize virtualization to provide a certain level of performance isolation. However, some of the shared resources cannot be divided, even in a virtualized system, to ensure complete isolation. If the performance degradation of co-tenancy is not known to the cloud administrator, a data center often has to dedicate a whole machine for a latency-sensitive application to guarantee its quality of service. Co-run …
