Development Of Proton Conduction Membranes In Application Of Vanadium Flow Battery, Le-Tu Qingge, Wei-Nan Guo, Ping Liu, Bao-Guo Wang
Journal of Electrochemistry
The polymeric hydrophilic/hydrophobic interactions into membrane formation were introduced. A general and straightforward strategy for preparing membranes with nanometer-scale pores was suggested by utilization of hydrophilic/hydrophobic interactions to generate phase separation and removal of polyion aggregates through water immersion. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and sodium allyl sulfonate (SAS) serve as the membrane material and pore-generator, respectively, resulting in chemically stable and oxidation-resistant membranes with various potential applications. Following the same procedure invented to produce the laboratory-scale membranes, the scale-up process to manufacture large-area membranes was completed. The obtained membrane exhibited the conductivity of 3.5×10-2 S•cm-1, thickness of 100 …

Characterization Of The Separator With Thermal-Shutdown Layer For Use In Lithium Batteries, Li Bai, Yong-Jian Huai, Xin-Ping Ai, Hai Jia
Journal of Electrochemistry
In this paper, the lithium ion battery coated with the thermal-shutdown functional layer has been introduced. The shutdown temperature of the separator could be decreased by using the melting point of thermal-shutdown functional layer. When the internal battery environment reached a critical temperature, the functional layer melted and coated the anode/separator with a non-conductive barrier, halting Li-ion transport and shutting down the cell permanently. The results showed that the functional layer did not affect the resistance, rate performance and cycle life. It was found the functional layer can significantly improve the safety of the battery when misused.

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) microgel-based optical devices were designed such that they can be stimulated to change their optical properties in response to light produced by a light-emitting diode (LED). The devices were fabricated by sandwiching the synthesized microgels between two Cr/Au layers all supported on a glass coverslip with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) deposited. Here, we found that these devices can be stimulated to change their optical properties when exposed to green LED light, which excites the AuNPs and increases the local temperature, causing the thermoresponsive microgels to decrease in diameter, resulting in a change in the devices’ optical properties. We also found …

Electron Transfer During Metal-Assisted And Stain Etching Of Silicon, Kurt W. Kolasinski
Electron Transfer During Metal-Assisted And Stain Etching Of Silicon, Kurt W. Kolasinski
Chemistry Faculty Publications
The etching of silicon in fluoride solutions is limited by the kinetics of charge transfer not thermodynamics. This characteristic is what gives fluoride etching its great versatility in making different types of nanostructures as the result of self-limiting chemistry. This review approaches the kinetics of electron transfer from silicon and metal coated silicon to a solution phase species from a fundamental point of view in order to establish a better understanding of the mechanisms of nanostructure formation during metal assisted and stain etching of silicon. Band bending calculations demonstrate that diffusion of holes away from low work function metals such …

Despite numerous organic semiconducting materials synthesized for organic photovoltaics in the past decade, fullerenes are widely used as electron acceptors in highly efficient bulk-heterojunction solar cells. None of the non-fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells have achieved efficiencies as high as fullerene-based solar cells. Design principles for fullerene-free acceptors remain unclear in the field. Here we report examples of helical molecular semiconductors as electron acceptors that are on par with fullerene derivatives in efficient solar cells. We achieved an 8.3% power conversion efficiency in a solar cell, which is a record high for non-fullerene bulk heterojunctions. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy revealed …

The effects of amounts of carbon naotubes (CNTs) on anodic properties were studied by TGA, SEM, EDS, cyclic voltammetry, EIS, polarization measurements and accelerated life test. The thermogravimetric analysis and EDS spectrum data showed that the high temperature oxidation decomposition of CNTs did not take place under the condition of the sintering temperature of 470 ℃, and the CNTS still existed in the anode coating in an element form. Compared with the contrast samples, the surface crack of the coating increased, but remained typical morphology. Adding …
Fluorinated Metallo Phthalocyanines For Chemical And Biological Catalysis, Hemantbhai H. Patel
Fluorinated Metallo Phthalocyanines For Chemical And Biological Catalysis, Hemantbhai H. Patel
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The rational design of robust oxidation catalysts based on organic molecules is hindered by the presence of labile C-H bonds. We have shown recently that replacing all C-H bonds by a combination of fluoro- and perfluoro-groups in a bioinspired Cytochrome P450 model based on a phthalocyanine, Pc, scaffold results in a stable yet reactive oxidation catalyst. The Pc cobalt complex catalyzes, for example, the aerobic oxidation of thiols to disulfides, a reaction of both biological significance and industrial importance.
The presence of robust C-F bonds, however, renders the catalyst unsuitable for attachment to solid-state supports, except via van der Waals …

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are synthetic materials made of a cage-like lattice of metal nodes connected by organic linkers. The pores between the nodes define the characteristics of the material. A MOF, MIL-101, has shown great capacity in the adsorption of carbon dioxide and methane, as well as in hydrogenation catalysis with palladium. While there has been success in synthesizing MIL-101 and other MOFs, the mechanistic details behind their assembly remain unknown. Understanding the synthesis mechanism is necessary to understand the kinetics involved and be able to produce this useful material on an industrial scale. Using MIL-101 as a prototypical …
