Cancer is one of the main global health problems. In order to develop novel antitumor agents, we synthesized 3,4-dihydropyrimidine-2(1H)-one (DHPM) and 2,6-diaryl-substituted pyridine derivatives as potential antitumor structures and evaluated their cytotoxic effects against several cancer cell lines. An easy and convenient method is reported for the synthesis of these derivatives, employing cobalt ferrite (CoFe$_{2}$ O$_{4}$ @SiO$_{2}$ -SO$_{3}$ H) magnetic nanoparticles under microwave irradiation and solvent-free conditions. The structural characteristics of the prepared nanocatalyst were investigated by FTIR, XRD, SEM, and TGA techniques. In vitro cytotoxic effects of the synthesized products were assessed against the human breast adenocarcinoma cell line …

Effect Of Surfactant Types On Particle Size And Morphology Of Flame-Retardantzinc Borate Powder, Yeli̇z İpek
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Zinc borate is a boron-containing chemical material that is used to increase the flame retardancy of polymeric materials, dyes, cables, fabrics, carpets, and the internal parts of automobiles and planes. Commercially used zinc borate, which has the formula of 2ZnO· 3B$_{2}$ O$_{3}$· 7H$_{2}$ O, has a particle size between 10 and 20 μm. However, recent studies have shown that nanosized flame retardants have more superior flame retardancy and less negative effects on mechanical properties than microsized flame retardants. Nanosized flame retardants disperse more homogeneously and even low quantities are sufficient to provide high flame resistance. In this study, nano zinc …

E-cigarette devices are wide ranging, leading to significant differences in levels of toxic carbonyls in their respective aerosols. Power can be a useful method in predicting relative toxin concentrations within the same device, but does not correlate well to inter-device levels. Herein, we have developed a simple mathematical model utilizing parameters of an e-cigarette’s coil and wick in order to predict relative levels of e-liquid solvent degradation. Model 1, which is coil length/(wick surface area*wraps), performed in the moderate-to-substantial range as a predictive tool (R2 = 0.69). Twelve devices, spanning a range of coil and wick styles, were analyzed. Model …

For the past three decades, the coordination-driven self-assembly of three-dimensional structures has undergone rapid progress; however, parallel efforts to create large discrete two-dimensional architectures—as opposed to polymers—have met with limited success. The synthesis of metallo-supramolecular systems with well-defined shapes and sizes in the range of 10–100 nm remains challenging. Here we report the construction of a series of giant supramolecular hexagonal grids, with diameters on the order of 20 nm and molecular weights greater than 65 kDa, through a combination of intra- and intermolecular metal-mediated self-assembly steps. The hexagonal intermediates and the resulting self-assembled grid architectures were imaged at submolecular …

Excessive amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS), unless counterbalanced by antioxidants, can cause cellular damage under oxidative stress conditions; therefore, antioxidative defenses against ROS must be measured. With the development of nanotechnology, nanoparticles have found numerous applications in science, health, and industries. Magnetite nanoparticles (Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$:MNPs) have attracted attention because of their peroxidase-like activity. In this study, hydroxyl radicals (?OH) generated by MNPs-catalyzed degradation of H$_{2}$O$_{2}$ converted the N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine (DMPD) probe into its colored DMPD$^{•+}$ radical cation, which gave an absorbance maximum at λ = 553 nm. In the presence of antioxidants, $^{•}$OH was partly scavenged by antioxidants and produced less …

This study investigated the microplastic presence of estuarine and barrier island beaches in the states of Virginia and North Carolina, USA. Seventeen sediment cores were collected at four study sites and initially tested for microplastic presence by pyrolysis-gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. For the extraction, microplastic particles were first separated from the sediment using a high-density cesium chloride solution (1.88 g/mL). In a second step, an oil extraction collected the remaining microplastic particles of higher densities. Under the light microscope, the extracted microplastic particles were classified based on their morphologies …5>

In the present work, pyrene-boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-substituted novel water-soluble cyclotriphosphazene derivatives (6 and 7) were synthesized by click reactions between a cyclotriphosphazene derivative with a hydrophilic glycol side group (2) and BODIPYs (4 and 5). All of the new compounds (2, 6, and 7) were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, as well as mass spectrometry and elemental analysis. The photophysical properties of the BODIPY-substituted cyclotriphosphazenes (6 and 7) were investigated by UV-Vis and fluorescence emission spectroscopy in water and water/solvent mixtures. It was found that the target compounds were soluble in water and could be potential candidates …

Three new 2-component unsubstituted (4P), diiodo- (5P), and dibromo- (6P) distyryl-BODIPY-bridged cyclotriphosphazene dimers were designed and synthesized. The newly synthesized BODIPY-cyclotriphosphazene systems were characterized by $^{1}$H, $^{13}$C, and $^{31}$P NMR spectroscopy. The photophysical properties of the distryl-BODIPYs (4-6) and BODIPY-cyclotriphosphazene dyads (4P-6P) were studied by UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopy. In these derivatives, the bino-type cyclotriphosphazene derivative bearing unsubstituted BODIPY unit 4 P exhibited high fluorescence and no singlet oxygen generation due to the lack of spin converter. The attachment of heavy atoms (iodine and bromine) enabled the production of singlet oxygen. The bino-type BODIPY-cyclotriphosphazenes (5P and 6P) were …

Choline derivatives were covalently immobilized on the surface of γ -aminated silica. The obtained immobilized choline derivative was then successfully used for a transesterification reaction to produce glycerophosphocholine (GPC). Fourier transform infrared analysis and thermogravimetric analysis/differential thermal gravimetry indicated that the surface of the γ -aminated silica was covered by choline derivatives and the highest immobilization amount reached 1.1 mmol/g under optimal conditions. More importantly, the highest yield of GPC reached 97.9% during transesterification. With regard to GPC in food or medicine for human use, the immobilization technology can avoid catalyst contamination of the product and increase the safety of …

In the presented study, the sulfur dioxide sorption properties of fly ash zeolite X were investigated. Sorption tests were performed on fly ash zeolite samples that were not prepared specially for sorption, in addition to dried samples and samples in the presence of water vapor. The samples saturated with water vapor showed the highest sorption capacity. The sorption capacity of the samples additionally dried prior to the sorption experiment was higher than that of the samples that were not specially prepared for the sorption test. Regeneration tests indicated relatively good regeneration properties. The obtained results were described with the use …

Silsesquioxane-based transition-metal complexes have come to the forefront due to the ability of silsesquioxane to control nanostructures and properties. However, some difficulties in complete complexation and purification limit the widespread use of transition-metal-based supramolecular coordination complexes comprising silsesquioxane. Herein, 2 different approaches have been proposed for the synthesis of metallo-supramolecular materials on the basis of ruthenium(II)-terpyridine functional double-layer silsesquioxane (DDSQ) (Tpy/Ru-DDSQ) (Routes 1 and 2). In Route 1, complexation was followed by functionalization of DDSQ with the ligand, whereas in Route 2, complexation was performed before the ligand was inserted into the DDSQ. Tpy/Ru-DDSQ obtained from both approaches was characterized …
