Chemistry Department Faculty Scholarship

Abstract for data:

Raw data for the journal publication, Silicon-stabilized three-dimensional covalent networks in high entropy diborides. ReadMe file provided.

Abstract for Journal publication:

High entropy ceramics offer a pathway to stabilize unconventional chemistries beyond traditional alloying rules. We report the incorporation of silicon into an AlB2-type high entropy diboride, Cr0.2Nb0.2Si0.2Ta0.2Ti0.2B2, despite silicon violating classical Hume-Rothery rules for alloying. Arc melting produced a phase-pure, chemically homogeneous structure, as confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD) and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDS). Silicon occupies …

The ideal aeronautical solid-state fuel should possess a high density (more thrust per Newton’s Third Law), high gravimetric heat of combustion (more energy for less weight), and a high volumetric heat of combustion (more room for mission-critical items). In this work, manganese diboride (MnB2) demonstrates a high density of 5.3 g/cm3, a high gravimetric heat of combustion of 38.30 kJ/g, and the highest volumetric heat of combustion of any known fuel of 202.99 kJ /cm3. When compared to the currently used fuel in Space Shuttle rocket boosters and the Space Launch System, aluminum metal, MnB2 represents a 100% increase in …

Raw Data For Tailoring High Entropy Borides For Hydrogenation: The Influence Of Crystal Morphology And The Exploration Of Catalytic Pathways, Michael Yeung, Ting Wang

Chemistry Department Faculty Scholarship

The high entropy boride (HEB) Al0.2Nb0.2Pt0.2Ta0.2Ti0.2B2, with its unique crystal structure and high coordination (platinum coordinated to 12 borons), has been shown in our previous work to exhibit exceptional catalytic properties, especially in sulfur-rich environments, where traditional platinum catalysts would succumb to sulfur-poisoning. In this work, we investigate the mechanism of the HEB catalyst, first by comparing the synthesis by flux growth, as previously reported, to an arc melted preparation. It is evident that the aluminum flux growth synthesis encourages the growth of single crystals, with clear and defined crystal facets, whereas the arc melted sample results in poorly defined …

Raw Data For A Mild Alkaline Hydrothermal Etchant For Mbene Exfoliation, Michael Yeung

Chemistry Department Faculty Scholarship

Abstract for data:

Raw data for the journal publication, A Mild Alkaline Hydrothermal Ethant for MBene Exfoliation. ReadMe file provided.

Abstract for journal publication:

MoBene (the boride equivalent of MXenes) has been a synthetic challenge because borides degrade in common etching media. Inspired by the intercalation of lithium ions into AlOOH, we hypothesized that a hydrothermal route enables lithium ions to intercalate the aluminum layer of MoAlB and further separate the MoB sheet apart. Here, MoBene is first synthesized through a mild hydrothermal etching method with dilute lithium hydroxide. X-ray diffraction showed a peak at 8.9°, confirming an exfoliated layered …

Chemistry Department Faculty Scholarship

Raw data for the publication High-Entropy-Stabilized Platinum Diborides for Poison-Resistant Catalysis including Powder X-ray Diffraction and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance data.

Abstract for publication:

Alloying and solid-solution formation is a powerful technique that enhances and adds properties through elemental mixing, but unfortunately, some elements simply cannot mix as their chemical nature prevents a thermodynamically stable structure. For example, the inherent nobility of platinum group metals does not favor bond formation and precludes their incorporation into higher (boron-rich) metal borides. Here, we demonstrate that when using five or more constituents, the higher mixing entropy will overcome these chemical limitations and form a …

Easy, Bright, Fluorescence Demonstration Of Buffer Action, Mariana Dykstra, Yejin Chung, Mark Muyskens

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

We report an attractive update to the demonstration of acid–base buffer action that is appropriate for ease of use and getting attention in the classroom. The twist is based on new fluorophore information and the recent availability of UV flashlights serving as an ideal, portable excitation light source. The pH-dependent fluorescence comes from a choice among three natural sources, namely narra tree wood extract, kidneywood extract, and scopoletin, which is a purchasable coumarin, that all perform equally well. We provide practical details for performing the buffer demonstration at scales of 100 and 1000 mL and give background information for context.

Utilizing Low-Cost Sensors To Monitor Indoor Air Quality In Mongolian Gers, Callum Flowerday, Jaron C. Hansen, Phil Lundrigan, Christopher Kitras

Faculty Publications

Air quality has important climate and health effects. There is a need, therefore, to monitor air quality both indoors and outdoors. Methods of measuring air quality should be cost-effective if they are to be used widely, and one such method is low-cost sensors (LCS). This study reports on the use of LCSs in Ulaanbataar, Mongolia to measure PM2.5 concentrations inside yurts or “gers”. Some of these gers were part of a non-government agency (NGO) initiative to improve insulating properties of these housing structures. The goal of the NGO was to decrease particulate emissions inside the gers; a secondary result …

Chemistry and Biochemistry: Data Sets

Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFR) are an emerging pollutant found in soot particles. Understanding how these change as they move through the atmosphere is important to human health. Here, soot was generated in the laboratory and exposed to simulated sunlight. The concentrations and characteristics of EPFR in the soot was recorded. Additionally, formation of hydroxyl radical from the photoactivated soot was measured.

Application Of Nanodisc Technology To A Membrane-Bound P450: Functional Studies And Resonance Raman Studies On Cyp51a1, Yuanqi Jing

Dissertations (1934 -)

Membrane-bound cytochrome P450s are highly insoluble and tend to form aggregations in aqueous solution due to its hydrophobic N-terminal transmembrane anchor. The traditional methodology of studying membrane-bound proteins depends on the use of detergent; however, detergent solubilization of membrane P450s does not satisfy many criteria of biochemical and biophysical studies on membrane proteins. A well-developed Nanodisc technology has been proven to be an extraordinarily efficient method of studying membrane-bound P450s. The human sterol 14-demethylases (CYP51A1) are membrane-bound P450 enzymes that catalyze oxidative removal of the C32 methyl group of lanosterol by first forming an alcohol, then an aldehyde, and finally …

Finding Combinations Of Objects Within Categories Using Edges Software, Erin M. Thorpe, Ehab Rizek, Yan Xu

Chemistry Software

Edges Software can be used to find the combinations of any objects within different categories. A combination is an arrangement of objects where order does not matter. The original intent of this software was to provide the combinations of proteins within different pathways to aid in building a protein-(target)-protein network where protein nodes are connected to each other through their common pathway edges. This software can analyze tens of thousands of rows of excel data in just a few minutes and provide an excel output that contains all the combinations of objects within the different categories. This output can then …

Does A Bottom-Up Mechanism Promote Hypoxia In The Mississippi Bight?, Virginie Sanial, Willard S. Moore, Alan M. Shiller

Faculty Publications

The Mississippi Bight, east of the Mississippi River, is a complex coastal ecosystem that, like the better-known Louisiana Shelf to the west, experiences seasonal bottom water hypoxia. However, input of allochthonous nutrients from the Mississippi River to the Mississippi Bight appears to be limited, begging the question of what drives seasonal hypoxia in this system. Prior research has suggested submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) could be an overlooked component of the Mississippi Bight biogeochemical system. We thus examined the hypothesis that SGD provides a “bottom up” driver for seasonal hypoxia in this area. We used a multi-tracer approach based on known …
